ikan MS-Pro Beholder overview

  • 1Description

The MS-PRO Beholder 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer for Mirrorless Cameras from ikan supports cameras weighing up to 1.9 pounds. Designed for professionals, it is suitable for use with small cameras with a 1/4"-20 mounting screw hole, GoPro cameras (requires optional mount not included), and select smartphones (requires optional mount not included). The camera platform incorporates three locking levers that allow you to adjust and balance your camera on the gimbal without requiring tools.

A 32-bit controller with a 12-bit encoder help create smooth, accurate, and efficient stabilization for fast response and extended battery life. Three follow modes—pan-only, pan-and-tilt, and 3-axis (pan, tilt, and roll)—allow you to control which axes to stabilize and which to allow follow movement on. A built-in lock mode will hold the camera locked onto one point; and in any of the gimbal's modes, you can reposition the camera manually by holding it in place and having it hold that position. The built-in joystick allows you to override the follow mode and reframe the shot electronically, for smooth framing adjustment. You can also invert the gimbal for low-angle underslung shots. A built-in 3/8"-16 threaded mounting hole allows you to mount the gimbal on a tripod. The unit is powered by three 18650 rechargeable batteries.

Designed for mirrorless cameras
360° rotating brushless motor
Lock mode: Yaw, pitch, and roll axes work together to keep the camera pointed in one direction
Pan-follow mode: Follow pan axis and hold the tilt position
Follow mode: Both tilt and pan axes
Three-axis follow mode: No restrictions as it allows the camera to follow pan, tilt, and roll
Easily switch to inverted mode at any time by simply flipping the handle over the camera
The built-in joystick, operated by your thumb or finger, allows you to make smooth framing adjustments within the shot
Inverted mode operated in conjunction with any of the Lock and Follow modes
Display screen on the back of the handle conveniently shows information on the battery life and operating mode
Two 1/4"-20 threaded mounting holes on the handle, suitable for mounting accessories
Batteries rest inside a caddy which is inserted into the handle. They are charged within the caddy by using a 2.5A/12.5W USB charger (not included). Charging with this method will only charge the batteries to 80% capacity, and ikan recommends using a dedicate charger such as the ikan ICH-SC4
USB port on the handle for firmware updates (cannot be used to charge the batteries or power accessories)

    ikan MS-Pro Beholder reviews

MS-PRO Beholder 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer for Mirrorless Cameras is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. No tools needed for balancing The first one I received had a horrible vibration making the video image un-usable. B and H sent me a pre-paid mailer via email. I returned the defective gimbal and shortly received another. I've been using it for the last three days in snowy freezing weather and it is working great. I use it with my Sony A5100 camera with no problems. I can mount and balance the camera in about a minute then walk through the forest for great moving shots.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for everyone First let me say that the build quality of the product is top notch. It is larger than I expected, a little more conspicuous than I wanted for street video. It looks professional and I have nothing bad to say about the product. The problem for me was I didn't know enough about stabilizers before I bought this one. I've read other reviews and I understood that a stabilizer must be properly balanced before it will work as advertised. for me, it was difficult to determine if it was in balance. When the motors are off, there is just enough drag in the system to make you think you have it balanced but not so. You turn it on and a rapid vibration of the motors making corrections indicates that it isn't balanced. You try to balance it again and for me it took several attempts before it didn't have the vibration. Keeping it in balance was difficult - I didn't realize that changing the zoom on a lens would change the balance. I was using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with a Panasonic Lumix G Vario 35-100mm f/4-5.6 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens. That's a 15 oz camera with a 8 oz lens. B&H was great with processing the return, but I felt bad because I made the buying mistake. I don't know how I could have tried it before I bought it - but these were my problems so maybe it will help someone else. If the unit had some smarts to tell you how to balance it or if it had micro adjustment knobs that allowed you to quickly dial in a balance it might have been usable for me. I don't know of any devices that have these features. It worked great when I did get it perfectly balanced!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent high-quality, multi-function 3-axis gimbal The MS-PRO Beholder is a hefty 3-axis gimbal, designed to hold various cameras up to 1.9 lbs. It pans and handles movement very smoothly and has a nice added feature--a tiny toggle-joy-stick for panning while standing still or when it is mounted on a tripod. I'm using it with my Panasonic LX100, but it will hold cameras larger than that. It has five different pre-balancing adjustments, and it takes a while to get it set just right. It's very sensitive to slight adjustments, but once you get it set it does an outstanding job--as well it should. It costs $650. One thing to note: the holder that the batteries go in doubles as a charger, but it is just a temporary (their description) charger that only charges the batteries up to 80%. A dedicated charger is another $50.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could be amazing, but I got 2 defective products in a row I really did love using this aside from one issue, which happened to me twice. The factory setting is a few degrees off from being in perfect balance. I went through 2 of these with the same issue before I finally gave up on it. Before I purchased it, I did not know that these gimbals are notorious for not finding their home setting in balance. Even when you balance it, hitting the joystick (which resets it to the home setting) always puts it off balance a few degrees. So, this runs you into a problem when editing that any footage with horizontal lines becomes clearly on a tilt. Ikan has had a lot of complaints and from my experience, there is very little support. I'm pretty certain that if that one issue had not happened to me twice, I would give this device a 5-star review for this price range. If you purchase one, be sure to verify that your gimbal isn't effected by this issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect! Exactly what I needed! This little device worked out better than I could have dreamed. A bit pricey, but it's worth it. I can't believe how steady the camera stays on the gimbal. And the mini-joystick was an unexpected surprise! Only two complaints: (1) On/off button should be in a better place (2) it's a bit heavy and iKan does not sell an attachable wrist strap. This could slip out of your hands if you're doing summer travelling and going to a hot place. Just buy aHinged D-Ring 3/8"-16 Hex Screw and wrist strap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Solution for Mirrorless Cameras Just to get it out of the way: yes, there is a learning curve to this thing. It does not just turn on and start working. You have to do a lot of research and practice to balance it quickly and properly. Being ever slightly out of alignment makes it impossible to get sustained shots that are good. That said, this is the case with all of these gimbal stabilizers, not unique to this one. When balanced properly, it will give you absolutely stunning results. It is extremely responsive, easy to reposition, has a wide array of shooting modes that are extremely handy, and is built like a tank. The battery life is great. What more can one ask of a 3 axis gimbal? It's small, relatively light weight, and will be great for mirrorless cameras, but not much bigger.
