Sony HVL-F45RM overview

  • 1Description

Equipped with a built-in 2.4 GHz radio transceiver, the HVL-F45RM Wireless Radio Flash from Sony will help users quickly create portable lighting setups with complete support for P-TTL / ADI metering. This flash can be set as a commander or a remote that fully supports Sony's existing radio commanders and receivers, including ratio control, the ability to work with up to 15 flashes in five groups, and access to 14 channels. The flash works within Sony's optical wireless flash system as well, where it is also able to operate as either a commander or remote unit.

Improving upon the previous model, the HVL-F45RM reduces size and weight by over 10% while improving the guide number to 148' at ISO 100 and 105mm and improving the recycle time to 2.5 seconds. Full bounce capabilities are available as well with tilt from -8 to 150° and a total of 360° of rotation. Also, it has a zoom head of 24-105mm which can be expanded to 15mm with a pull-out diffusion panel alongside an LED light useful for video. The flash offers vastly improved controls via the rear LCD, including customizable buttons and flash distribution and memory settings. Additionally, the flash has a dust- and moisture-resistant construction.

Equipped with a 2.4 GHz radio transceiver, the HVL-F45RM is able to operate as either a radio commander or remote as part of Sony's radio wireless system, including the FA-WRC1M Wireless Radio Commander and FA-WRR1 Wireless Radio Receiver. This system has an operating range of 98' and does not require line-of-sight. Also, it will support up to 15 flashes in five groups on one of 14 channels. Additionally, it has full support for Sony's P-TTL / ADI metering system, including high-speed sync and ratio control.

Compatible Cameras:
a7 II
a7R II
a7S II
a99 II
a6500
Advance Distance Integration (ADI) flash metering works with cameras and lenses with distance encoders to more accurately balance flash output with ambient light and subject reflectivity by taking camera-to-subject distance into account
Support for optical wireless TTL in both commander or remote modes with up to three groups in one of four channels.
Compared to its predecessor, the HVL-F45RM has a reduction in size and weight of greater than 10%, making it ideal for use on smaller camera bodies, such as the mirrorless a7 series.
Guide number of 148' at ISO 100 and 105mm with the ability to produce approximately 210 full-power flashes on a single set of batteries.
The flash is equipped with an 5500K LED light with an output of 400 lux at 1.6' / 0.5m and 10 power levels. It has coverage for 35mm lenses and will illuminate subjects approximately 3.3' / 1m away when set to ISO 3200 and f/5.6 during movie shooting. Additionally, it will run for about 4 hours on a fully charged set of batteries.
Flash head offers -8 to 150° of tilt along with a total of 360° of rotation for full bounce flash capabilities.
Offers a high-visibility dot-matrix LCD and tab-structure menu. Also, the main Quick Navi control interface provides more direct control over commonly accessed settings. Additionally, the main keys can be reprogrammed to rapidly access specific settings.
Can fire continuously for up to 40 flashes at a rate of 10 flashes per second.
Slow, high-speed, 1st and 2nd curtain sync is supported on cameras with TTL communication.
Zoom head of 24-105mm as well as a pull-out diffusion panel which covers 15mm.
Flash distribution settings of standard, center (guide number priority), and even (wide angle priority) will adjust how the flash affects the scene or subject.
Two memory settings are available for near instant recall of different setups.
Manual flash control from 1/1 to 1/128 power in 1/3 or 1/2 EV steps.
Recycle time of 0.1-2.5 seconds.

    Sony HVL-F45RM reviews

HVL-F45RM Wireless Radio Flash is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing I have been using Nikon Speedlights for 20 years and expected that this unit would work similarly on my Sony A7II. With Nikon, you get a good TTL exposure using any program mode except Manual; with the Sony, it works properly only when the program mode is set to Auto. In Aperture Priority mode the flash is simply additive to whatever the camera decides is the proper exposure, so it will come out overexposed unless you deliberately compensate with the EV dial. The problem with Auto mode is that it picks the proper exposure by varying the ISO rather than shutter speed or aperture, which may not be the parameter you want to shift.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light flash Very nice flash; light (but could be a bit smaller). I use it with A7R2 + 35/1.4 and 85/1.4. Communicates with camera well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic size, and functionality. Feels small and light compared to a Nikon sb-910. And it also seems to be easier to operate, and more powerful. I was worried about the balance on the small A7r2 body. But even without a battery grip, it does not seem to be unwieldy or unbalanced in my hands. The LED light will be handy if I ever need to grab some video in low light. However I do not see myself using it much. The built in radio transceiver is a huge plus, and the main reason I purchased it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent flash It's smaller, lighter than the Sony HVL-F43M, and AF Illuminator works perfectly in "S" focus mode with my a7riii, not older model like a7rii. I think it should work with a7iii and a9. Hope this help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth a little extra Great speedlight. Bought two. Wireless function is perfect. Easy set up. Control everything from a controller or use one flash as a controller. Probably going to be durable but will see...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for Sony A7Rii This flash working well with the Sony A7Rii camera. I used it as the regular on-camera flash, as the commander and as the slave flash with the Sony commander and with the other Sony flash and Sony reciever. No any issues in all modes. Finally Sony launched a flash when AF assist lamp is working on their mirrorless cameras (but make sure you have the latest firmware on your A7Rii, and maybe for other A7 family cameras). It's more than useful. I have Sony commander FA-WRC1M, and this flash working well in the slave mode with it. At other photo shoot I used this flash mounted on the camera as the commander for the Sony receiver FA-WRR1 and Sony HVL-F43M on it. Everything worked well, the distance between this F45RM and that receiver was up to 25ft. I used my Enelope AA rechargable batteries I used for F43M and for SB-600/SB-900 Nikon flashes before. It looks this flash can work on the same batteries much more longer (I need to take more statistics, but I took more than 1300 shots all with this flash, some in regular mode, some in commander mode, and my smart charger said the 25% of my batteries' charge was last after that shoot). This flash has the "classic" design unlike the F43M's "cobra design. Can't say it's not good as I used to work with the Nikon's flashes before. This flash is noticeable smaller than F43M, and its screen is smaller as well. I'd preferred to have a larger screen. Once I accidentally set the -0,7 EV correction on this flash by pressing its button by my forehead. Then I put the lever to the "lock" position to prevent any accidentaly changes. I can recommend this flash for all who want to have the small but very powerful and versatile flash for their Sony mirrorless cameras. Definitely it's a good choice for full frame A7/A9 family owners, but maybe for a6500 too. It's working with my a6000 in a regular mode, but no AF assist led and no wireless mode available there, unlike on A7Rii

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Flash Obviously the wireless feature is a very welcomed addition for the Sony flash lineup. This is a great product when I am shooting portraits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight yet powerful This flash will be used with the Sony A 7 III. The form factor and weight of each device makes for a great kit. I also have the Sony Radio Commander, which was easy to pair with the F45RM. This combination makes off camera lighting relatively easy. And purchasing from B & H was simple--click buy today and in my hands the next.
