    Blackmagic Design HYPERD/STM reviews

HyperDeck Studio Mini is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Aside from one little issue, this is a great recorder Overall this is a nice recorder. I liked it enough to buy a second, and probably a third. It is a little picky about what SD cards it will work with. So be sure to check BMD's web site to see what cards they recommend. Other cards can and do work, but they have to be pretty fast to support HD or Ultra HD video. So sticking with the recommended models is a good idea. I would have given the recorder five stars, except that it has the same issue that all of Blackmagic's HyperDeck units have: if the incoming video drops even for a split second it stops recording. So if you're attached to a camera whose battery dies or is power cycled, or you've got an iffy cable, you may find that you don't have the recording you think you have. You have to pay close attention to the unit to make sure it hasn't stopped. I've lost more than one recording because of this issue, and it is frustrating because it seems like it would be easy for BMD to fix... once engaged into Record mode it should stay there even if video is interrupted... the result of any interruption should just be that it starts a new file as soon as the video signal resumes. Other than that, I do recommend this product. It works well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a good product. Item powers up in playback mode. So you initially get a no signal reading on the display. After losing about a day and a half waiting on a USB-C cable I had to order to see if firmware was installed correctly, I found out that the record button had to be pressed to put the unit in record mode which allows it to receive a signal. It took 3 calls to BlackMagic and a additional $20 for a cable that I did not need to resolve the problem. Other than that it performs like a champ.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No headphone This is a great little unit with one glaring feature omission. No headphone jack. Who builds a deck without a headphone? How do I check my audio if I can't plug in headphones. Other than that seems to be great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product but reliability a concern Worked great when we were trying it with 1080i/5994, 1080p/5994. Switched to 720p/5994 and found it would not recognize the signal. Tried to debug with signal generator and found that all 720p variants were down. Contacted BlackMagic and RMA out to them in progress. Second device bought from BH Photo in video section that had to be RMA'd within span of a month. Both pieces were from different vendors.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unreliable It worked well for a few weeks, now it often fails to record... Everything looks fine until I can't stop the recording, have to unplug it ( no power button) ending in a corrupt file. Sometimes it also only records audio with a black or red frame. Thank god I still have my old recorder as a backup.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Couple of quirks CONS: - Doesn't seem to be a power button on the unit, so you have to pull the cable out. That seems like a lot of unnecessary wear-and-tear on the power cable input plug, which is already starting to wiggle loose. - There is a latch for a fuse in the back of the unit. That makes me nervous. Do I need to carry fuses with me? Under what circumstances would it blow? The only time i see fuses is on lights. Why this unit? - Getting the unit to recognize the signal is finicky. I can plug and unplug cameras into other monitors and it instantly gets recognized, no matter what resolution / frame rate combo. With this unit, I'll have to remove the power plug and power cycle the unit to get the signal to be recognized (again, unnecessary wear-and-tear on the power plug). - Doesn't come with a power cable, nor a USB-c cable. Kind of surprising. PROS (not already listed in the specs) - Runs cool (a lot cooler than the video assist). Has a fan, but it is quiet. MY TAKEAWAY: - The quirks are going to keep me from switching to this unit from my current solution. There aren't enough new features that I don't already have to outweigh the cons.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recorded Hours of footage So far, everything has been stellar. I wish it had h264 recording option but im sure that compression would be more cpu intensive.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not there yet. This has been a good recorder. But, I have lost two Videos with it. It will go to a red frame and lose a bit of audio. I have also had it just stop and say no signal and you can still see the image on the little screen... it's a love hate. I like recording to SD and the small form factor, but I always have to run a backup recording.
