LiveU Solo Overview

Start streaming high-quality HD video and audio with the LiveU Solo SDI/HDMI Video Encoder by connecting your camera or video device via SDI or HDMI. Leveraging LiveU's Cloud Service, you can easily broadcast to a large variety of content delivery networks, including YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Wowza, Ustream, and more, using bonded connectivity over dual cellular networks (requires separately available modems), Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.

The plug-and-play functionality, combined with the power of LiveU's Reliable Transport protocol (LRT), enables a simple setup for high-quality streaming video with versatile distribution options as well as stable transmission, even when operating in remote locations. If operating remotely, use the internal battery to power the Solo for approximately three hours. Plus, the compact form factor won't bog down your production by weighing down your camera.

This is the Solo video encoder only; cellular modems must be purchased separately or as part of a kit.

LiveU Solo Reviews

Solid

This has been solid so far. I wish they allowed you to save presets. For example, preset A = 1080p60 to Facebook , preset B = 720p to Twitch. So that things can be switched and set up quickly. Pairing the LiveU Solo with Restream is really powerful. The best way to do this is get data and bonding from LiveU. Buy the cellular modems from B&H.

best product ever.

I'm so happy about this and I recommend this product to anyone

Modems are locked.

The ad implies that the modems are unlocked. However they are locked and can't be used with anything but ATT and Verizon services one of each. I wanted to return just the modems however because I purchased it as a set they will only take the entire package back. I will now have to return all of it then purchase just the LiveU encoder again and register all the service plans registered to that unit over again. I purchased a couple unlocked modems locally and the unit perform nice. I would have given a 4 or maybe even a 5 had the modems been unlocked as the ad implies.

Awesome

This worked far better than I thought it would. I used this for a camera feed from a moving car, feeding the image back into VMIX - this worked perfectly. The one thing I can't stand is it stops streaming if it looses video signal, which was a complete pain, but still worked well. Definitely read the manual! and support material online. When you purchase this, you login to their website, add your device, and activate subscription. You don't need to get your own SIM cards, or activate your plan independently.

Great device but not what I expected

I wanted to run this off of my SlingStudio and I do that. The cost is $313/mo (for Solo Connect which includes LRT, Verizon unlimited, and AT&T unlimited). I get everything set up for my event, push the Connect button to go live and nothing happens. You have to push Go Live off of the YouTube Live Console or whatever is similar to your streaming service. I have to carry a laptop around just to push the actual Go Live button. I tried doing this through iPhone, iPad, Chrome, YouTube, YouTube Studio, nothing works. It has to be a laptop just to push the Go Live and End Stream buttons. I do like this device very much as I have had issues with my Live Streams in the past.

Not so sure about this device.

If I get to the point where the modems work, I'll post another comment. In the meantime, I have to say that support for the LiveU Solo is pretty awful. Perhaps if they have correctly set up the modems before shipping it will work right out the box but that's not my experience. After over a week, I've yet to see the magic. One or both of the modems simply will not connect and therefore no bonding for me. Plus, the required-for-bonding solo connect subscription is $300 a month.

Not for solo operator

Very reliable, good battery life. Just this encoder can't mix Stereo audio signal to MONO which is critical for SOLO operator. So if you have 2 audio channels and only one speaker speaks, you will get only one ch active in your live stream.... you need some mixing desk or mix in the camera. Unfornetly Canon C70 can not mix inside the camera

Does this hook up directly to internet/YouTube or to a laptop and from there to internet-YouTube?
Asked by: robert
Hi Robert, Thank you for your question. The unit connects to WiFi and Etnernet, or can use USB modems and can send a signal to the YouTube or any other RTMP destination.

Is it possible to use both the SDI and HDMI inputs on the LiveU Solo at the same time? (e.g. to stream two camera inputs at the same time)
Asked by: Donn
No. The LiveU Solo is designed to stream a single feed, and it does an amazing job of that! Also, two cameras streaming on the same ip feed would really bog down that feed. You need to keep your bandwidth as clean as possible.

question

do you have to get the monthly thing or can it work independently? and what's the difference between lu200 and the solo? They look the same
Asked by: Anonymous
The Cloud subscription allows you to use LRT, a technology that allows multiple connections such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, 2 external modems into one connection. With no subscription, you get only one connection. The LU200 and Solo a very similar but differ in that the LU200 works with LiveU servers for a fee and includes two internal modems. The Solo does not have an internal modem nor does it work with the LU-Central web portal where as the LU200 does.

How many cameras can it support? I use multiple cameras with a switcher for my broadcast in the field. Can it connect with that setup?
Asked by: Jonathan
Thanks for your question Jonathan. Yes the LiveU Solo can connect to this setup, as and ouput to a switcher for transport or a camera output.

question

How long will the internal battery last with two USB modems and Wi-Fi? And are there additional battery packs you can use to extend the operating time?
Asked by: Brett
No statistics have been provided as to battery run times unfortunately. We would guess that you would get about 30-60 minutes. As always we suggest you have an extra battery. We suggest this USB power supply. It provides 3 hours run time. LiveU External Rechargeable Battery B&H # LIU500EXBAT1

Without the subscription services, is there a workable free Ap? To tell LiveU device where to send the stream? To one of many CDN? And can LiveU stream live using ONLY wiFi from a smart phone hotspot? No other modedm no ethernet, strictly a hot spot from let's say an iphone? Obviously it would have to be in airplane mode. Also would a subscription be required if I wanted an embedding code of the stream to give to a client so they can IT it to their website?
Asked by: Jimmy
According to LiveU they do not have an App. However they do have a portal, which is mobile friendly and can be accessed on the go. The LRT subscription is to take advantage of the bonding feature on the unit however it is not needed. The unit can stream on 1-4 connections at the time with LRT active. The unit can only stream to one CDN at a time, however Switchboard Live and Restream are both good options to push your stream to multiple destinations. LRT and Graphics are their only two subscriptions and neither are required to stream.
