Atomos ATOMNJAIN1 overview

  • 1Description

Able to record DCI and UHD 4K signals at up to 60 fps, the Atomos Ninja Inferno makes a great companion to cameras and camcorders that output uncompressed video over HDMI. The monitor itself features 10-bit FRC processing and AtomHDR display technology that supports a 10-stop brightness range, allowing you to more accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor offers built-in presets to accurately translate popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remained unaltered.

In addition to HDR monitoring, the monitor also offers a High Bright mode for traditional Rec. 709 monitoring. This mode takes advantage of the full 1500 cd/m² brightness to allow for more confident monitoring in bright outdoor environments, even without a sun hood. In HDR mode, use of an included snap-on sun hood is available, as displaying a wider brightness range reduces the overall brightness of the monitor.

Incoming video signals can be recorded in a wide range of Apple ProRes and Avid DNx codecs which maintain high quality while not requiring the storage space of uncompressed video. Both ProRes and DNx are edit-friendly, requiring no conversion in post-production to ensure smooth playback and compatibility with most common video editing software. Standard 2.5" SATA III recording media is supported, with compatible SSDs able to record in all formats including 4K and high-frame-rate HD.

Note: check the Atomos website for an updated list of supported drives

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Ninja Inferno features built-in protective armor that features silicone-covered corners and chamfered edges. Like its predecessor, the Ninja Flame, the Inferno features dual Sony L-Series battery plates that support battery hot-swapping, enabling longer run times with hot-swapping. For audio recording, the monitor supports balanced XLR inputs with 48V phantom power and XLR outputs via separately available audio breakout cables. Additional features include a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools. A power supply, SSD Caddy, and a travel case are included with the unit.

With AtomHDR you can monitor up to 10 stops of dynamic range of your camera's LOG image. Most conventional monitors can only display 6 or 7 stops, which is fine for standard footage, but a LOG image will look overly flat. It is also superior to monitoring with a loaded LUT, which can clip the highlights and mask shadows.
4K 60p Capabilities
Record high-resolution 4K footage in DCI or UHD formats up to 60 fps, including 24 and 25 fps for a more film-like aesthetic. All recordings are stored as high quality Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR files with 10-bit 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. A variety of bit-rates are available to fit your project and storage needs.
Audio I/O
Audio can be input and output via the multi-pin locking connector. Separately available breakout cables can provide XLR audio input with 48v phantom power and output. A 3.5mm headphone jack on the side can be used for convenient audio monitoring.
7" Daylight Viewable Screen
The Ninja Inferno's 7" LCD screen is illuminated by a bright 1500 cd/m² LED backlight, making it possible to view in daylight without requiring a hood. Plus, the screen is also color calibrated from the factory to ensure accurate image representation.
HDR Signal Management
LOG and HDR signals can be difficult to monitor with conventional equipment. Though, with the Ninja Inferno's built-in HDR signal management functions, the LOG signal can be converted to the PQ standard for compatibility with existing consumer and professional HDR equipment.

    Atomos ATOMNJAIN1 reviews

Ninja Inferno 7" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for Video This system is great for recording video and as long as the audio is also recorded through HDMI it is great. The audio port uses a proprietary LEMO type connector with limited selection of available cables. Currently only Atomos brand cables are available on B&H and they feel pretty weak and flimsy. IF you are recording audio separately and syncing in post then don't worry about this concern but if you want to record both to the Atomos, you have been warned. Screen is very bright and looks great even in direct sunlight. The aftermarket sun shade/hood works great as well and makes this usable even in the brightest of conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best investments I've made in film making While I did buy this from another site, I buy from B&H all the other times. I'm writing a review here because I love and respect B&H. The Ninja Inferno has performed beautifully every time I've used it. The quality of the ProRes 422 HQ is worth the extra hard drive space. I've learned from others on how to use the HDR features of the Ninja Inferno to help me expose my footage while shooting in vlog on my GH5 and GH5s. It's a great product. As I said, it is an excellent investment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A great bit of kit for recording but... ... but don't buy it as a mobile grading solution if you want to work in HDR. You can't just plug it into a laptop (e.g. with a BMD Ultrastudio Mini Monitor, which the Atomos refuses to sync with) and be able to grade HDR via the HDMI input on the go. This contradicts Atomos's advertising for this unit, which was why I bought it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but three support emails to Atomos over 2 months now about how it could possibly work as claimed have gone unanswered — so I guess that speaks for itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So so much better than on board camera recording! Most people buying this device know what it is for and probably know what it can do. That said, I am one who stepped up from basic HD camcorder to recording on this and WOW.. the quality is insane. I am currently using it with the Sony AX53 which DOES put out a clean 4K30 or 4K24 uncompressed signal out of the HDMI port. I am shooting soccer games right now, and while this is way overkill for recording games for review later, I also wanted to eventually use the footage to offer highlight reels of players and wanted the best quality I could get given the limitations of recording such games. A Camcorder is the best camera for the job, given the length of games, and the need to quickly zoom and focus on the fly while panning/tilting on an elevated camera tripod (I use HiPod LX21). I am still learning what it can do, but the quality is amazing. I bought the SmallRig cage for this as well, which also comes with an HDMI pinch to ensure the cable is yanked/bent thus destroying the ability of this to accept HDMI input. Something I think is a must have when you pay this kind of money. I also decided to go with the GTEK SSD and reader. It is a little bit more in cost, but honestly, 1TB SSD bare bone drives are not too much cheaper, and the case is metal vs the supplied plastic case. I also like that I can just slide the SSD right in to the GTEK reader and use the drive to edit from if I want (though I am backing the footage up anyway and reusing the drive.. so I copy it off). I have yet to try all the scopes and such, but the screen is almost bright enough to use in very bright sunlight. The cage comes with a hood as well so that will help. One thing.. the batteries.. holy crud.. they dont last! I bought the big ones and they last about 1/2 hour or so. I stepped up to this ( and a few accessories to hopefully power this longer. I highly recommend a VMOUNT battery setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product - Value! Bought 2 - Just putting them to the test with studio and field work. They are easy to use and offer tremendous versatility for my GH5 set-ups. These aren't perfect (none are), but the quality is way up over past products from Atomos, and the value is fantastic. Really like these!!! I wouldn't want to work without them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of equipment! I'm still going through the testing period but here a few highlights so far. It's quite big and can serve as a monitor for video village if needed. It flawlessly picks uncompressed HDMI signal fro your camera and turned it into Apple ProRes (HQ), which is fun to work with in post. Besides other technical specs such as HDR, Waveforms, RGB colors etc. (you can read about them in the product description.) Another positive aspect to point out is the brightness of the monitor, which can be seen well in the middle of cloudless day of Albuquerque scorching summer. If you ever been to New Mexico you will have a clue. On the negative aspect the monitor gets extremely hot. It gets hot to the point that even touching the screen gives your finger tips burning sensation. The batteries, which comes with the monitor don't have necessarily long life, so have more than two if you about to have ten hours production day and won't have direct source of electricity. One more important thing to point out. Make sure you get coiled HDMI cable and hard drive caddy, which are not originally included but a necessities in order to have a flawless work with the monitor. I'm going to chip half a start (which is not an option here) only that heating issues. Besides that it's a great device, which will make your product look professional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Bought this as a field monitor but with it's color reproduction and ability to record to SSD in 10 bit it has become a more useful tool than I ever imagined!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Monitor/Recorder! Really a great monitor/recorder and the fact that it went down in price is just a great buy! But I am using it on an A6500 so it is SUPER overkill. But I m the type of person to buy for not and for late. Thinking about buying a Sony A7S II but if a new one gets released (A7S III W/ 60P 4K with 10-bit recording, then I would already have something ready to go for video recording). So it's? more of a future-proof purchase. But overall this thing is a beast!!! Definitely worth every penny!!!! Would but again, if it went down an extra $200 haha.
