Panasonic DMC-ZS70 overview

  • 1Description

A pocketable multimedia powerhouse, the silver Lumix DC-ZS70 Digital Camera from Panasonic blends a sleek form factor with versatile stills and video capabilities. Revolving around a 20.3MP 1/2.3" High-Sensitivity Live MOS sensor, the ZS70 realizes rich image quality with low noise and sensitivity to an extended ISO 6400 for working in difficult lighting conditions. The sensor and image processor also enable shooting continuously at up to 10 fps with single-shot AF, 30 fps at 8MP in 4K Photo Modes, and UHD 4K video recording at 30p. The 4K capabilities also permit working with unique Post Focus technology for choosing a specific point of focus after shooting.

Beyond the imaging abilities, the ZS70 is also characterized by its impressive 30x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom lens, which covers a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range, as well as 5-axis HYBRID O.I.S. to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Also notable is the camera's compact size and incorporation of both a 1.166m-dot electronic viewfinder and 3.0" 1.04m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi allows you to wirelessly share imagery or remotely control the camera from a linked smartphone or tablet.

20.3MP High-Sensitivity MOS Sensor
A 20.3MP 1/2.3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor helps to realize rich image quality with reduced noise and high sensitivity to an expanded ISO 6400. The imaging and processing capabilities also avail continuous shooting rates up to 10 fps in single-shot AF mode, 5 fps with continuous AF, or 30 fps at 8MP in the 4K Photo modes.
Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x Zoom Lens
A truly expansive 30x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom offers a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range along with a maximum aperture range of f/3.3-6.4. The lens construction incorporates five double-sided aspherical elements to minimize spherical aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for increased image clarity and sharpness.

Benefitting the long reach of the lens is a powerful 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S. system that compensates for a variety of camera movements for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. This image stabilization system also enables a unique Level Shot function that automatically detects the horizontal line of the recording image and keeps it level during shooting, regardless of camera tilt, helping to achieve greater shooting stability.
4K Video and Photo Modes
The sensor and processor combination also enables 4K video recording at 30p in the MP4 format at 100 Mbps. Full HD 1080p and HD 720p recording is also possible, as well as high-speed HD and VGA recording with 120 fps and 240 fps slow-motion playback, respectively.

Besides video, the 4K capabilities also permit recording 8MP stills at 30 fps in a trio of ways:
  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 15 minutes, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.
Post Focus and Focus Stacking
Another attribute of the 4K capabilities is a unique focusing method called Post Focus. Working in conjunction with the contrast-detection focusing system and the intelligent Depth from Defocus (DFD) technology, Post Focus records imagery as a 4K MP4 file at 30 fps and shifts the specific point of focus throughout the burst shooting in order to offer a range of distinct focusing ranges to choose from. During playback, via the camera's touchscreen, you can then tap the specific region of the image you wish to be in focus and an 8MP JPEG file will be created. Multiple individual files with different points of focus can be created from the original burst, and focusing assist functions can also be used to gain even more precise control over the specific in-focus region.

This technology also allows for producing focus stacked images in-camera to realize a greater depth of field, especially when photographing close-up subjects. In this mode, images are recorded and saved with varying points of focus and then blended together to gain an extended depth of field.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • A Live View Finder (LVF) is integrated into the sleek body design to permit comfortable eye-level monitoring. This electronic viewfinder has a 1.166m-dot resolution and covers 100% of the image frame while shooting.
  • Alternatively, a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD monitor is also available for live view shooting, image review, and intuitive menu navigation. The screen's design incorporates a 180° tilting mechanism to benefit shooting from high and low angles, as well as for taking front-facing selfies.
  • A host of manual controls offer simple, direct control over a variety of oft-used camera settings, including a control ring surrounding the lens that can be configured to adjust zoom, shutter speed, manual focus, and ISO sensitivity.
  • A micro-USB port allows you to charge the battery in-camera.
  • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides you with 380 shots per charge when working with the rear LCD or 250 shots per charge with the electronic viewfinder.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi allows you to wirelessly share photos and movies to linked smartphones and tablets for direct sharing online. This connectivity also allows you to remotely control the camera from a mobile device.

Panasonic DMC-ZS70 reviews

Lumix DC-ZS70 Digital Camera (Silver) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than expected I already owned the ZS100 and ZS50, both purchased from B&H. Wonderful results from such small cameras. I read a preliminary report on the ZS70, and the photos were impressive. My initial thoughts that increasing the megapixels from 12 mp on the ZS50 to 20 would create a lot of noise on such a small sensor. Not so, at least with decent lighting. I am delighted by the results thus far. The ZS70 is the best shirt pocket camera I have ever encountered and I own over 200 cameras, including a dozen Leica's. It will be my take everywhere camera along with my iPhone 7+. If only I could use it as a phone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera Overall but NOT FOR LOW LIGHT This is a great camera that I bring everywhere because it gives me DSLR quality photos, 4k video and fits in my pocket. The only place I WOULD NOT RECOMMENDbringing it to is the beach: So, if you happen to bring this camera to the beach, tiny grains of sand will get stuck in the lens and cause it to malfunction. Luckily, I bought the warranty and got my money back, but if you did not buy the warranty, you're screwed. Also, low light photos look super grainy so this is definitely not the camera for low light photography. Though, it is great for bird photography because of its impressive optical zoom. The only reason it is not 5/5 is because ofthelow light issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressive I was skeptical that a small sensor could handle 20 megs. It does so very well with adequate light. It is the best shirt pocket sized camera I know of with an enormous zoom range. I also have the ZS100 which is more effective in low light given its 1 inch sensor, and has a very useful 25-250 mm zoom range, but smaller than the 24-720 mm range of the ZS70. At age 80, I find the large zooms to be burdensome, but the small cameras like the ZS70 and 100 to be absolute joys for an enthusiastic amateur like. I definitely recommend both cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Faantastic camera, for me as a intermeditate photo freak! BH has so far never let me down. This camera was the next step up from a Canon PowerShot SX130 IS,. Didn't want the bigger DLS camera's... this one still fits in a small purse but, gives me the best of all worlds!! I'm still going thru options and experimenting, still have things to learn!! It has been easy so far, like my Canon. Pic's are great. Will take a trip soon, then will know more! I'd imagine a experienced Photographer might want and expect more... for me an intermediate photographer it's perfect!!! It's taking me to the next level, with lots of options to help me grow!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Compact Travel 30x Zoom with 4k I bought this to replace its previous model which I damaged. While it's slightly more bulky and heavy than its predecessor, I think its 4K video and photo abilities make up for it. It still fits in my pocket. The Leica zoom lens is still fabulous especially for traveling. Macro is perfect. 4k MP4 video is a new treat that will future proof your videos. The 4k photo feature is a bit misleading; it actually takes a variable length video from which you choose a single frame to save as a 4k photo, a considerable amount of work. Clearly I'll still shoot most photos in HD and save 4k photos for special moments or scenes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fabulous camera, lots of features, but steep learning curve I'm a fine artist who depends on taking many photos to use as references for my paintings. This is my third Panasonic long-zoom point and shoot. This model is filled with features, some super and some really superfluous. I don't like the touch screen, easy to touch something unintended and the touch points are really tiny. But you can turn this off, which I have. Photos are sharp and there are tons of options for extra effects or to modify the final product. My only real gripe so far is that battery life is shorter than my last two cameras, but there's so much 'stuff' on this model and that probably explains it. The super zoom is fabulous, but with all its many features this could be a tough model to master if I hadn't already had similar Panasonic cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pocket camera to carry with you at all times Great digital compact camera with a outstanding Leica zoom lense! What I love about this digital camera is that it is small enough to keep in your packet and have it with you at all times. The electronic features give the user more options than they can imagine with a compact camera. I am just getting into photographing birds and wanted a zoom lense that would provide great up close shots. This camera provides that need and much much more. I've used this camera for a very short time, but look forward to learning and gaining experience with use in my photographic images. I'm really excited to learn all the features including the video mode. Very happy with my purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lumix ZS70 - a camera small enough to carry all the time It's like having your phone camera on steroids. Full control of the exposure, saves images in raw for processing later (if desired). Compared to the Nikon A900: the A900 had a little longer focal length when zoomed out, but the ZS-90 has an electronic viewfinder (very useful in bright sun). I opted for the electronic viewfinder. One thing I have to be careful of while using the EVF - my nose touches the touch screen and changes the focusing point. A little annoying, but I need to be more careful looking through the viewfinder. The touch screen is great to have and makes using the camera a real pleasure. The menu system is well done and easy to find what you are looking for. The WiFi connectivity is awesome. The camera app makes remote control very easy. Well done Panasonic, now I have a small camera that I can carry all the time.
