Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 Video Head features an innovative, continuous counterbalance system based on a nitrogen-piston mechanism. Unlike heads with stepped levels of counterbalance, the Nitrotech N8 can be precisely adjusted to the weight of your camera rig. Adjust the counterbalance by twisting the knob on the left side towards the front of the head. The knob itself can be extended with a pull, adding room useful with a wider camera. With a maximum payload capacity of 17.6 pounds, the Nitrotech N8 is designed to be used with a variety of video or DSLR/MFT camera rigs. This 75mm flat-base head can be used with a half-ball adapter (available separately) for maximum flexibility in mounting to tripods, sliders, hi-hats, or other supports.

The Nitrotech N8 includes several pro-style features for reliable, efficient use of the head. The included camera mounting plate locks in from the side, and it has a sliding design to help balance the rig on the head. Smooth panning and tilting moves are enabled by the Nitrotech N8's variable fluid drag systems. A push-button illuminated bubble at the rear of the head lets you see at a glance if the head is leveled. Unlike some other Manfrotto heads, the N8's controls are on the left side of the head, freeing your right hand to operate the panhandle.

Looking to lessen the weight of accessories on your camera rig? Attach your monitor, rangefinder, light, flag, etc. to the 3/8"-threaded Easy Link Connector built into the side of the Nitrotech N8. This transfers the weight of the accessory away from the camera and to the head, making the camera less top-heavy.

    Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 reviews

Nitrotech N8 Video Head is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Counterbalancing Head In This Range Outstanding Video Head! Sure, it's not a Sachtler or Cartoni Focus, but for the price this head beats all for the smooth, solid tilting. My FS5 rig is an awkward one to balance on, say, a 504HD, but with the N8 I can tilt all the way forward and back without spending over four digits. The piston is what truly makes the difference. It does take a few minutes to get the right combo of piston height, drag, and friction, but once set it really is a dream to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight performance Mostly using the N8 to support a run and gun setup of Weapon Helium, a variety of modules, mounts and rods with Sigma 120-300 f2.8 bringing the total weight just below the recommended limit (using it for wildlife filming). The trick is to balance the rig and then combine the nitro piston and tilt lock to get a beautifully smooth tilt action. Smooth diagonal movements are possible if you take time to balance the pan and tilt resistance to eliminate stepping. Perfect for what I need as often need to carry gear for some distance before setting up. Haven't spent much time with lighter lenses though I am sure the performance will be even better. Great performance for the price and won't break your back carrying it. Pictured with 600mm f/4 lens but that is exceeding the max recommended weight for the unit. Was the only image of the head in action I could find now

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nitrotech is a winner. I have visited NAB for the last 8 years, trying to stay current on technology. I end up coming home and buying something that needs replacing or upfitting. I did not go to NAB this year thinking my tripod head was that item. In fact I was pretty pleased with what I had (another current Manfrotto head). Then I tried the Nitrotech on a set of sticks at NAB with a camera that matched mine for weight. Oh my goodness. What a great product. Smooth, holds every position you put it in. Adjust it correctly, and the drag becomes just some resistance so you don't move the camera past your spot. A great value for the price. I bought it. Couldn't be happier with its performance in my rig. Nice lighted bubble, easy to set up, a joy to use, well-priced for the performance you get. My only complaint: the head is a little taller than my other tripod head, by about 3/4, and the controls end up consuming more area in the bag, to the point I may have to move up one size on the bag to not have to squeeze the tripod into my existing Manfrotto MBAG90PN bag. I think I'm going to move this bag onto my spare system over the long haul and buy the next bigger Manfrotto bag available. That's nobody's fault and is not a design flaw of the head. It's just not the most compact head you've seen. It would not be the head I'd choose for that trip overseas, nor would I choose it if I wanted a light weight tripod system. Again, this is not a design issue to me, which is why I give it a 5 star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Butter smooth My camera is only about 6 pounds (DVX200) so I am not pushing the capability of this head in terms of claimed weight handling. That said, it has very smooth pan and tilt. I shoot mostly stage work from the back of an auditorium so I am moderately zoomed in and need to make a lot of following motion shots. Anyone who shoots professional dance knows how critical smooth pan and tilt shots are, esp when executing both and often requiring zoom outs. Sloppy or jerky moves are a killer. For me, while there are much more expensive heads, this one does the job for my size camera. Having the ability to have the pan arm on either side is a plus for me. My Ace does not have that ability and the fine adjustments I can dial in on the N8 are also more versatile than the presets on the Ace. I cannot comment on how this head would work with larger cameras, but for me this head is impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Video Head Up to now I was using a Vanguard video head (PH-123V). What a difference, this Nitrotech NE is such a pleasure to use! It pans beautifully and no more fear of the head falling forward from the weight of the camera. I video with a full size Canon video camera and it handles the weight perfectly. Would definitely recommend this video head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from About the counterbalance For me, this was step up from Manfrotto's 501HDV video head that came with a tripod kit purchased in 2010. This was a huge improvement over the 501HDV, which didn't provide sufficient counterbalance for my Sony PMW-EX1R. With the Nitrotech N8 you can dial in the precise amount of counterbalance that you need, up to a point. I also have the Sony PWX-FS7, and with the 18 -110mm lens mounted directly on the N8, it provides plenty of counterbalance for that as well. However, I also have the Zacuto universal baseplate and quick disconnect, and with that mounted on the head, the counterbalance isn't quite sufficient. For that reason, I upgraded to the Nitrotech N12 head, which does provide sufficient counterbalance. The N8 does have one advantage over the N12 though, in that it can accommodate lighter weight cameras better. The N12 requires a minimum camera weight of about 8 pounds. Download the PDF instruction manual for the N8 and look at page 11 for the actual counterbalance rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect head for documentary projects This head is equally good on tripods and monopods. I use it for working with my Canon C200 camera, as well as for my DSLR combo - a Canon 5D MarkIII plus a Blackmagic Video Assist monitor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice head but it has been recalled Nice head for the price. I really needed a flat base head. It has however been recalled and Manfrotto is just stupid to deal with. I have not had any issues with mine. Manfrotto was already supposed to have a fix, but there has been no communication to that the fix is ready.
