  • 1Description

The MixPre-3 Audio Recorder/Mixer and USB Audio Interface from Sound Devices is a high-resolution audio recorder with integrated USB audio streaming combined with durability that offers high-quality sound for professionals. It can be used by musicians, sound designers, podcasters, videographers, YouTubers, and field recordists in various audio applications.

The MixPre-3 features Sound Devices' Kashmir ultra-low-noise, discrete, and Class-A microphone preamp. Built with 32-bit A-to-D converters, the MixPre-3 ensures audio recordings surpass those of off-the-shelf, IC-based mic preamps. The unit can function as a USB audio interface and record audio to an SD card while simultaneously streaming multiple channels of audio via USB.

Furthermore, the sunlight-readable color LCD of the MixPre-3 provides convenient navigation. It is constructed with a die-cast aluminum chassis, is lightweight, and has a robust build. Plus, it is compact and will fit in your pocket, which makes it well suited for jobs on the run.

Finally, with intuitive operations and advanced mixing capabilities such as ergonomic gain-control knobs, pan and soloing, timecode input jacks, 1/4"-20 mounting capacity, 1/8" headphone monitoring, and the AA battery/Sony L-Mount lithium-ion battery powering options, the MixPre-3 is sure to meet all your audio-application needs.

Anytime, Anywhere Audio
The MixPre-3 is a lightweight, high-resolution audio recorder with integrated USB audio streaming and offers professional sound quality combined with durability that is suitable for musicians, sound designers, podcasters, and videographers.
Solid Audio Quality
Featuring handcrafted, high-performance, ultra-low-noise, discrete, Class-A Kashmir microphone preamps, the MixPre-3 has a -130 dBV noise floor, analog limiters, and 32-bit A-to-D converters. These features ensure quality audio recordings.
USB and Recording
The MixPre-3 makes for a versatile USB audio interface, offering the unique ability to record audio to an SD card while simultaneously streaming multiple channels of audio via USB. It is handy for interviews, podcasts, or simply as a backup recorder to your computer, and the MixPre-3 can be used for Skype or Facetime interviews and to record audio for podcasts or video blogs.
Pocket-Sized, Unintimidating Design
The small stature and design of the MixPre-3 will fit most production environments. It features a touchscreen for simple and intuitive operation and a sunlight-readable color LCD for convenient navigation. Constructed with a die-cast aluminum chassis, it is both lightweight and robust. The MixPre-3 is compact, so much so that it can fit in your pocket, and it's ideal for jobs on the run.
Intuitive Operation
The MixPre-3 bridges the gap between sound engineers, musicians, and YouTubers with user-friendly navigation featuring Basic and Advanced modes. It is designed to allow a user to start recording right out of the box.
Advanced Mixing Capabilities
With a full-featured mixer, the MixPre-3 offers ergonomic gain-control knobs for fast and accurate mixing. Other key features include pan and soloing plus easy-to-see ring LED metering per channel. It also includes a 3.5mm jack for headphone monitoring with user-programmable presets from its wide-bandwidth headphone amp.
A Videographer's Dream
As an added benefit to DSLR users, the MixPre-3 has a retractable 1/4"-20 mounting thread, making it a good match for a wide variety of cameras. This design allows for solid, low-profile tripod/camera mounting; because the male and female 1/4"-20 threads are captive, they cannot be lost and are always available. Capable cameras can feed timecode to the device over its HDMI input, which provides synchronization of sound and video. Timecode can also be fed into the unit's 3.5mm input from an external TC generator. The MixPre-3's HDMI input can also receive "record triggers" from popular cameras, which automatically start and stop recording via the camera's record button.
Flexible Powering Options
The MixPre-3 has multiple powering options. It can receive power from AA batteries in a convenient detachable sled of either four or eight cells. Also available is a sled that offers powering from up to two hot-swappable, Sony L-Mount lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, the entire recorder can be powered from a laptop's USB Type-C or USB Type-A connectors, offering convenient connection and powering with just one cable. For applications where AC power is available, Sound Devices offers an optional AC adapter as well.
Wireless Remote Control
Sound Devices Wingman, which is a free download from Apple's App Store, is a wireless interface that gives users touchscreen access to monitor meters, start and stop recordings, and edit filenames and metadata on the MixPre-3 directly from any mobile device running iOS 8.0 or later.

    Sound Devices MixPre-3 reviews

MixPre-3 Audio Recorder/Mixer and USB Audio Interface is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Sound Quality. User interface needs work. The thing we love about Sound Devices is the quality of the sound. The preamps are solid. The build quality is ok- not as robust as their earlier products. It's lighter, with rubber & plastic- more to break. Have to remove the battery pack to access the SDHC memory card. NOT a fan of powering the unit off USB C to dual USB A jacks, but at least they provide the cable. Worst is the user interface- the software is NOT plug and play- you really need a manual (from the guys who writes many manuals) because it's just too hard to figure out. Steep learning curve but worth the price for a 3x2 mixer that is compact and sounds great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from MixPre3: Not perfect yet, but still heaven-sent. Mostly high marks. Sound quality, excellent. Light weight, robust. Add my name to following wish list: #1, RECORD button is easy to forget about, what with all the dazzling array of screen colors, light bars, etc. Everything looks so good and is so reassuring, including listening to voice/music thru headphones. Except. Right. I forget to actually depress the RECORD button. Am I the only one whose bus has left without me? Of course, who wouldn't like pro level line/mic outputs, maybe with line/mic switches. That being said, I can hardly wait to purchase next generation MixPre-3. Thanks, guys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I've only used this for recording voiceovers so far, but the results have been great. Crystal clear audio and fairly easy to set up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My dream machine! First about me, I'm not a pro. Just an amateur field recordist who constantly criticizes own work to get better. My only regret is this makes my 2 year old MixPre-D totally obsolete. Now I can record straight into my mixer controllable via bluetooth, have 1 more channel, can notice about 15-18dB of headroom improvement due to the great ADC of MixPre-3, and handle hot microphones like MKH8060 without pad. Fader/Gain knobs are now digital, so I can now remember/set/see precise gain for different field recording situations (I'm yet to test whether gain riding on digital knobs produces any artifact). Different presets can also be created for different situations which store all the settings of the recorder. All these at a much lower cost than MixPre-D! By default, recorder is in basic (rookie) mode, with gain fixed at 6dB, knobs functioning as faders from -infinity to +20dB, all 3 channels 'armed'/ turned on, phantom power turned off, producing a 5-track polyphonic file (3 ISO channels and the LR mix). However for my current use, I have customized it to record only one ISO track, and set fader knobs as gain. This required some effort. First I followed steps in SoundDevices youtube video MixPre Series Tiptorial - How to Use Channel Knobs to Adjust ISO Levels. After that, I disarmed 2 unneeded channels (by pressing corresponding knobs, then tapping red 'arm' button which would then turn grey). Then I went to Menu->Record->Rec L-R and changed LR link(factory default) to off. Minor Complaints/ Changes from MixPre-3: Power switch has moved over to the left. Gain knobs are slightly smaller than I would like. Low cut/Phantom power have lost dedicated buttons, are now set from menu after pressing a channel knob. Locking XLR inputs' push portion(made of steel) has been trimmed, this makes unlocking XLR cable difficult. Limiter threshold is now fixed. Bootup time is still a long 7 seconds. No hirose input for power. The plastic 4aa battery sled is perhaps the weakest part of this otherwise rugged recorder. But I guess these choices were made to make the mixer more portable and make room for the LCD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from After a long search for quality sound...I found it Having moved up to an advanced level in videography over the years, it has been especially tough to bring up sound quality to an acceptable level. From camera audio, to the Tascam DR 40 to the Zoom H6...the audio was lacking in depth, S/N ratio and just that "fat" sound I was looking for. The Zoom H6 was good...but the preamps were just too thin and edgy, shrill even. Plugging a good mic into it...it washed out the audio and introduced a lot of noise above level 7. Then I got the MixPre-3 because of the reviews and the Premix website. Night and day difference. The sound quality on this beast blows away everything I have ever used. When you do a test on this thru a trusted mic...you will feel a smile creeping up on your face. This sounds good, really good. Build quality etc. is high...but the complete silence except of the voice, the "fat" sound, the solid interface...SOLD!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome combo recorder and audio interface This review is for the Sound Devices MixPre-3, but just a note that I returned a Tascam DR-701D after 3 weeks and got the MixPre-3. The MixPre-3 was $150 more, but for the extra money I also got a great 3 channel audio interface. The MixPre-3 doubles as a recorder/mixer and audio interface. The MixPre-3 also has better preamps and limiters. What I lost by going to the MixPre-3 was one input (3 channel verses 4 channel on the 701D), and the ability to jam sync timecode. The MixPre-3 does not have its own built in timecode generator like the 701D, so it needs a constant timecode input from an external generator, like the Tentacle Sync that I use. I only used the MixPre-3 on one job so far, but it worked flawlessly and captured incredible sound. The job was recording a live band and the drums got a little hot at one point, but the analog limiters did a great job handling that problem. The default behavior of the front panel knobs is to function as faders to the mix channels, but I didn't care much for that operation. After a call to Sound Devices Tech Support, the tech told me how to configure the knobs to be input gain controls. This was a little tricky, and involved setting the MixPre-3 to operate in the Custom Mode, and changing a couple settings in that mode. It seems to me that this should be the default configuration, but at the least the flexibility was there to do the customization. I thought the manual could have been a lot better (as others have also stated in their reviews), but Sound Devices Tech Support is among the very best you will find anywhere. I had to call several times with operational questions, and I never waited for more that 5 minutes, and the techs were very knowledgable and a pleasure to talk to. All in all, I think the MixPre-3 is a great recorder with the added bonus of doubling as an audio interface. I definitely will not be returning this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding The sound is outstanding.I bought it because of those preamps are the best on the market right now . I can record interior dialogue at 30db and bring it up in post and when you listen to the playback you absolutely hear no noise. Very impressive. The sound is Hollywood motion picture quality.Again very impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thoughtfully Engineered and Highly Functional There's a lot to love about this compact recorder. The pre-amps are clean and rich, the controls are easy to use, and it's size is great for working in small spaces. It's clear from the design that a lot of thoughtful engineering went into it- for example, there's a place hidden in the battery compartment for storing a key to engage and tighten the threaded screw which normally hides inside the device. While it does go through batteries pretty quickly if you're using phantom power, the device does alert users when the batteries are running low, saving me from nasty surprises. It's a good choice for beginners who want good sound or seasoned pros who need something a little smaller.
