Olympus TG-5 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for the adventurous type, the red Tough TG-5 Digital Camera from Olympus is a durable point-and-shoot with a rugged physical construction and apt imaging capabilities. Utilizing a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor, the TG-5 offers notable image clarity and low-light performance, to ISO 12800, along with fast 20 fps continuous shooting, 4K/30p video recording, and high-speed Full HD 1080p shooting at 120 fps. Balancing the imaging capabilities is a versatile 4x optical zoom lens, which spans a 25-100mm equivalent range, and has an f/2 maximum aperture to benefit working in low-light conditions. Additionally, the Variable Macro System also positions this lens for close-up shooting with subjects just one centimeter away for true macro photography.

Complementing the sensor and optical attributes of the TG-5 is a robust set of features for withstanding the elements, tracking your adventures, and sharing your images. The camera is rated for underwater use, as well as tested to withstand falls and crushing, and is hermetically sealed against dust and moisture for assured use in trying conditions. Making use of these stats, a Field Sensor System incorporates GPS, a manometer, compass, and a thermometer for recording the details of your environment and embedding this data onto your photos and movies. Using built-in Wi-Fi and the OI.Track app, the recording log data and the imagery can be shared to a mobile device for compositing and sharing online.

Tough Design
The TG-5 is designed to withstand a wide variety of conditions, ranging from harsh climates to everyday mishaps:
  • Waterproof-rated to IPX8 for use underwater to depths of 50' / 15m
  • Freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14°F / -10°C
  • Shockproof to falls from 7' / 2.1m high
  • Crushproof to withstand up to 220 lbf / 100 kgf of pressure
  • Dustproof-rated to IP6X to protect the internal components of the camera

Also benefitting the camera's use outdoors, the lens has been sealed with double-pane glass to prevent fogging and condensation. The camera body design has also been configured to permit direct operation while wearing gloves, and the zoom lever has been relocated for easier access.
12MP BSI CMOS Sensor and TruePic VIII Processor
Utilizing a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor, the TG-5 offers a mixture of speed and sensitivity to suit both photo and video applications. The BSI design of the sensor affords cleaner image quality at higher sensitivities, up to ISO 12800, for working in low-light conditions, and the processor further helps to reduce noise and expand the dynamic range. The processor also avails a 20 fps continuous shooting rate in raw as well as the ability to record 4K/30p video with full pixel readout or high-speed Full HD 1080p video at up to 120 fps.
4x Optical Zoom Lens
Spanning wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, the built-in 4x optical zoom lens covers a 25-100mm equivalent range and has a bright f/2 maximum aperture to suit working in low-light conditions.
Field Sensor System and Built-In Wi-Fi
Ideal for recording data while shooting in the outdoors, the Field Sensor System includes a GPS module, manometer, compass, and a temperature sensor. This data, along with the photos and movies themselves, can be transferred to a smartphone via Wi-Fi where the tracking data can be embedded or overlaid onto the images themselves using the OI.Track app. Additionally, both photos and videos can be searched-for using recorded tracking data.

In addition to wireless transfer, the built-in Wi-Fi also allows you to remotely control the camera from a linked smartphone or tablet.
Other Camera Features
  • Rear 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor offers a bright, clear means for shooting as well as image playback and menu navigation.
  • Pro Capture Mode will automatically sequentially shoot from 0.5 to 10 seconds before the shutter is pressed to ensure you don't miss a shot.
  • Four separate underwater modes are available to produce more accurate shots when working in or near the water, and include Underwater Wide, Underwater Macro, Underwater HDR, and Underwater Snapshot.
  • An apt close-up shooter, the TG-5 has four separate shooting modes within the Variable Macro System. Including Microscope, Microscope Control, Focus Stacking, and Focus Bracketing modes, you are able to photograph subjects at just one centimeter away. Additionally, the optional LG-1 Light Guide and FD-1 Flash Diffuser can be used to light close-up subjects.
  • Using a 25-point autofocus system, a variety of focusing features can be used depending on the type of subject you are photographing, including Face Detection AF, Focus Area Selection, and AF Tracking. Manual focus is also possible, with Manual Focus Assist and Focus Peaking functions to help.

Olympus TG-5 reviews

Tough TG-5 Digital Camera (Red) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera - ended up buying two I bought this camera for my daughter who is an avid hiker, kayaker, and explorer in general. She wanted a good outdoors camera. After buying the TG-5 for her and learning how to use it so I could quick-study her, I was so impressed with the color capture, scene mode selection, and ease of use I purchased one for myself. I have a high-end Canon DSLR with multiple lenses that I use for planned photography but this TG-5 is now my keep it with me always camera, including snorkeling trips. The fact that it shoots RAW format is essential to me since I like to tweak photos to maximize their quality. I rate this as an excellent camera for those who want a tough, high quality camera to capture those unforgettable moments we experience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A fine camera, but not the upgrade I hoped for As a professional nature photographer whose primary focus is Florida waters, I've been a big fan of the TG series of Olympus cameras since the TG-1. There are times when my big DSLR underwater housing rig is too cumbersome or time-consuming to manage. The TG is a useful tool in my kit with which I've shot many publishable photos (I shoot stills only, not video, btw). I've owned the TG-2 and TG-4 and I recently purchased the TG-5. The incremental upgrades are good and welcome but what I was hoping to see in the TG-5 was a performance upgrade in the quality of the sensor. Regrettably, photos made with the new camera are indistinguishable from-side by-side photos shot with the TG-4. This camera delivers impressive results at ISO 100 and 200. ISO 400 is okay. ISO 800 is marginal at best and at ISO 1600, picture detail turns to mush. Sad. And so I am returning the camera to B&H and I will look to my trusty TG-4 to continue to soldier on. Thank you, B&H, for allowing me to return the TG-5 to you (in mint condition, and it never got wet). And Olympus, if you are listening, thanks for creating a marvelous little camera but it's time to step up your game. We need a TG-6 with a seriously improved sensor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice camera This is a take-it-anywhere companion to my Olympus EM-5. Having similar menus is a plus. I typically shoot raw+jpeg in P mode. Jpegs are good - perhaps better color and exposure than the EM-5. Raw format has already proven its worth for a couple of jpegs that needed extra help. The camera feels good in my hand, and the controls are comfortable. Olympus should include the CLA-T01 adapter and lens cap, but oh well. I plan to use the camera mostly when hiking, skiing and canoeing. It will be with me on a whitewater rafting trip this summer, and snorkeling in Hawaii next winter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from TG-5 First Impressions I shoot in the ocean daily, I shoot surfing photos and shallow underwater photos, for the last 9 years I have used Olympus Tough cameras exclusively, this is my 8th Olympus Tough. This latest model continues with the rugged features and good water resistance with the huge improvements of a lens and LCD screen that do not fog like some of the previous models. The lens also has displayed a remarkable ability to shed water and stay relatively spot free in challenging in the waves shooting conditions. Close-up and microscope images are remarkably clear and color reproduction excellent. This camera is loaded with optional settings for obtaining the best images possible, the myriad of settings make it just a little challenging for shooting in fast moving, changing conditions like those found in surf photography, thus my 4 star rating instead of 5. It's my opinion that this is a high end compact waterproof digital that should appeal to and give good service to those looking for a rugged, waterproof, compact digital that is capable of being fine tuned for producing the best images possible from this type of camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great if you know what you want So that you know where I'm coming from I will tell you I am an avid amateur photographer. I have a Nikon D810 and an Olympus OM-D E-M1 mkII. I bought an Olympus TG-3 years ago for a trip. I liked it very much and told a fellow coworker so, who wrangled it out of me. I skipped the TG-4, but now find myself in the market for another underwater camera so I bought the TG-5. I have had it for several weeks and put about 4,000 photos on the card. The good; -The ergonomics are good. It feels good in my hand. -The image quality seems very good. The shadows are not bad at all given the size of the sensor. -It is waterproof, which is the main reason I bought it. -I dropped it today and it survived unscathed (4 feet onto concrete). -I recently learned that I can buy a filter adapter and put a polarizer on, which I have done. I love this. -The battery is supposed to be short lived, but I got through a whole day at the zoo on a single charge. -The menu system is very much like the Olympus cameras I already have. The Not So Good; -To change where the camera focuses, I had to refer to the manual which said to push and hold the Ok button then the focus points will appear and I can select a different one. I have to do this quite a bit due to the next item. -Manual focus is just about unusable. There is no indication of where your focus is distance wise. I have pretty much given up on manual focus as an option. -The photos where I have the sun in the frame have the worst lens flair of any camera I have ever used. I don't remember the TG-3 being that bad. -There is no manual exposure settings. I work at night and carry this camera for use in wet weather and used to use a technique where paint by light while the shutter is open for 4 seconds or so. I can't do that with this camera. BUT I have found that I can do even better using the Live Composite feature. Overall I like it and will be keeping it. If it fulfills your requirements, there is nothing better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not waterproof Leaked and failed on the second day of snorkeling on a Hawaiian vacation. Luckily, I also took my 6 year old Pentax water camera which IS a waterproof camera and did not leak under the exact same conditions as this Olympus camera. TG-5 filled with sand and water. Worked intermittently for a bit after it dried out, then died again. Took very nice pictures for a day. Panorama features works correctly only about 30% of the time. Note that water cameras that have been submerged are non returnable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Vacation Camera The TG-5 is a great camera for its intended purpose. It excels as a family vacation camera for use at the beach, around the pool, and as a camera that you can take anywhere without worry. It is a great snorkeling camera combined with the optional fisheye attachment and you can get surprisingly good portraits with background separation if you use the optional telephoto lens attachment. The camera really shines as a tool to capture macro images of bugs and wildlife; there simply is no other system that provides the macro capability that this camera does especially when combined with the light guide attachment and flash diffuser. Image quality is good in natural light and underwater and the Raw files have decent latitude especially when using the Olympus Image Viewer. The entire system (camera, fisheye and telephoto attachments, flash diffuser, light guide, and extra battery) all fit nicely in the compact dedicated Tough System Bag and are easy to toss into a backpack and take on all your outdoor adventures. In summary, it is a FUN camera to use, it is easy to bring along on all your adventures, and it lives up to its TOUGH name. I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent outdoor and recreational camera Great features - I particularly like the ability to shoot RAW, ability to shoot in a version of aperture-preferred mode, and relatively easy access to change ISO. Just shot about a thousand images and it barely made a dent in battery life. As a rough and tumble, waterproof backup to my large DSLR system, this definitely fits my intended use for outdoor and water sport recreational activities. Wish the higher ISO noise level was better, but given sensor size it's not bad. Highly recommend.
