Ricoh WG-50 overview

  • 1Description

Distinguished by its durability, the orange WG-50 Digital Camera from Ricoh is a tough, compact point-and-shoot ideal for your everyday adventures. Its rugged physical construction renders it waterproof for depths up to 45.9' and shockproof from heights of 5.2', as well as freeze, crush, and dustproof to resist nearly anything you can throw at it. In terms of imaging, the WG-50 features a 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor that enables high-resolution stills shooting and Full HD 1080p video recording, as well as a sensitivity range from ISO 125-6400 and a top shooting rate of 10 fps to suit working in a variety of situations. A 5x optical zoom lens also contributes to this flexibility, and covers a wide-angle to telephoto 28-140mm equivalent focal length range, and is complemented by Pixel Track and Digital SR to help realize sharper imagery. Rounding out the WG-50's design, its compact size incorporates a 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor, which uses an Outdoor View Setting mode for improved visibility in bright lighting conditions, and six LED lights also surround the lens to help illuminate close-up subjects for macro shooting.

Durable Design
The WG-50 is designed to withstand a wide variety of conditions, ranging from harsh climates to everyday mishaps:
  • Waterproof-rated to IPX8 for use underwater to depths of 45.9' / 14m (JIS Class 8)
  • Freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14°F / -10°C
  • Shockproof to falls from 5.2' / 1.6m high
  • Crushproof to withstand up to 220 lbf / 100 kgf of pressure
  • Dustproof-rated to JIS Class 6 to protect the internal components of the camera
16MP CMOS Sensor
Featuring a 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor, the WG-50 is capable of recording high-resolution stills and Full HD 1080p video. The sensor also affords a sensitivity range of ISO 125-6400, for working in a variety of lighting conditions, and a continuous shooting rate of 10 fps to suit photographing moving subjects.
Ricoh 5x Optical Zoom Lens
Spanning wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, the 5x optical zoom lens covers a 28-140mm equivalent range to suit photographing a wide array of subject types. Its optical design features five aspherical elements for notable sharpness with controlled distortion, and Pixel Track SR (Shake Reduction) and Digital SR both help to minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld.
Other Camera Features
  • Six LED macro lights surround the lens to produce brighter, more even lighting when working with close-up subjects.
  • Enhanced Digital Microscope mode enables close focusing to 0.4".
  • Benefitting working with the rear 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor, an Outdoor View Setting mode automatically boosts the screen's brightness when working in bright, sunlit conditions for greater visibility.
  • Included D-LI92 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 300 shots per charge.
  • A nine-point autofocus system provides quick and accurate focusing performance and is also capable of detecting subject's faces using Smile Capture, Blink Detection, Self Portrait Assist, Self Portrait Assist + Smile Capture, and Pet Detection settings.
  • The processing engine contributes to a fast shutter lag time of 0.008 sec. and a startup time of 1.5 sec.
  • Interval shooting modes allow you to record a series of exposures at pre-determined intervals for producing time-lapse imagery.

Ricoh WG-50 reviews

WG-50 Digital Camera (Orange) is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Images I needed a water camera for my new found hobby, Kayaking, and I wanted a camera that would allow me more than wide angle images and no zoom on details. I found the Ricoh and best of all had a spare battery available, my first choice had it highly recommended it due to its short life but the spare was not available or unknown delivery. So I moved on and found this camera. No reviews not images to look at. But nice characteristics and the comment that brand is owned by Pentax. I said why not. After using the camera for three days (own it for a bit over a week) I decided to share my findings. I feel obligated since there are none and I like to have somebody else's review when I am in doubt, so here it goes. Always remember that this is a point and shoot camera but it has really good functionalies. Pros: -Life battery is very good, I have the spare but after all day shooting average of 220 items I still have battery left to continue. -Macro function is fantastic, and the led lights around the ring make you feel like a camera pro being such a small package. - Great image quality Cons: This may turn people away but it is pro that can become a con: The live view has the functionality to make the image clear, almost looks like way overexposed. Always have in mind that if you framed the image correctly the camera will deliver a good image , it is hard to grasp and seems frustrating but the results make you continue believing. Images are bright and perfectly exposed. The big cons for me is that if any function is selected in the menu, goes away when camera is turned off, this is very frustrating until one learn to let go and remember the camera is a point and shoot and delivers quality images. I may look to see if I find a software update. The thought of sending it back crossed my mind, but I really like the images I got without effort and it is nice not to have a camara that does what it suppose to do. Images surrounded by water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Great for Macro, Fair Camera The main reason for purchasing this was that it came up in searches for "point and shoot with macro". I thought the 6 LED's on the front of the lens would provide good lighting for macro use, when the light is often blocked by the camera. The LED's are extremely dim and purplish colored - very disappointing. The waterproof covers for the battery/SD and data port compartments are very awkward and feel like they might break. The picture quality and image stabilization were not as good as the Nikon S8200 this was replacing either. I didn't need the rugged, waterproof capability so I'm returning it to purchase something else that better fits my needs. Thank you B&H for the easy return policy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from dissapointed I was disappointed with the photos this camera took, my 10 year old or so Nikon s8200 takes much better photos. I love the idea of this camera and the led lights for macro shots, but for me the quality just wasn't there. Returning the camera.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Breakable What good is 49 feet deep, if you jump off the boat into the water and the 6 foot jump breaks the camera.
