Fujifilm X-E3 overview

  • 1Description

A svelte, versatile camera, the black Fujifilm X-E3 is a progression in their rangefinder-styled mirrorless series, and features an updated sensor and processor along with familiar classic design. Revolving around the 24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro image processor, high-resolution stills can be recorded with notable sharpness and clarity due to the sensor's organic layout and omission of an optical low-pass filter. The sensor and processor combination also avails quick continuous shooting up to 14 fps, an extended sensitivity range to ISO 51200, and the ability to record UHD 4K/30 video or Full HD 1080p/60 video. Additionally, when working with moving subjects, continuous autofocus performance has been optimized for improved moving subject tracking and overall accuracy. Benefitting the imaging capabilities, the X-E3 retains its retro-inspired physical design complete with a high-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder, 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear touchscreen LCD, and physical shutter speed and exposure compensation dials. Also, its wireless capabilities have been expanded to include Bluetooth connectivity for low-power image transferring and remote camera control from a linked mobile device.

24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III Sensor
Utilizing Fujifilm's unique, randomized pixel array, the 24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III sensor affords a high degree of image quality and sharpness due to the omission of an optical low-pass filter. Versus conventional pixel patterns, the X-Trans design more closely mimics the organic nature of film in order to produce nuanced colors and smooth tonal transitions, while also reducing moiré and aliasing.
X-Processor Pro
Aside from benefitting the low-light performance with an expandable sensitivity range to ISO 51200, the X-Processor Pro also contributes to fast performance throughout the camera system, including a start-up time of 0.4 seconds, shutter lag time of 0.05 seconds, shooting interval time of 0.25 seconds, and a continuous shoot rate of 14 fps when working with an electronic shutter, or 8 fps with a mechanical shutter.
UHD 4K and Full HD Video
The X-E3 supports both recording in both UHD 4K/30p and Full HD 1080/60p video resolutions. Film Simulation modes can be used during recording to give a distinct look to footage, and video can also be output via HDMI to an external recorder or monitor, and a mic jack is featured for working with an external microphone.
Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
  • The rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD touchscreen allows for familiar operation, focus point selection, and menu navigation.
  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder allows for bright, clear eye-level monitoring with a frame rate of 54.54 fps for smooth monitoring in a range of lighting conditions.
  • A dedicated Focus Lever provides faster, more intuitive control over selecting specific focus points while shooting.
  • Dedicated shutter speed and exposure compensation dials for direct, intuitive control over exposure settings.
  • The physical exposure compensation dial now features a C position to permit an expanded compensation range when working with the control dials.
  • An EF-X8 external shoe-mount flash is included to provide additional illumination when working in low-light conditions. The flash has a guide number of 26.2' at ISO 100.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow for direct wireless sharing of files as well as remote camera control from a linked mobile device.
91-Point Autofocus System
Utilizing both contrast- and phase-detection methods, the hybrid autofocus system employs 91 total points, which can be divided into 325 total areas for a high degree of focusing accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Approximately 50% side-to-side and 75% top-to-bottom of the frame is covered by phase-detection points in order to provide fast AF performance to suit working with moving subjects.

When working with autofocus, you can choose either single-shot AF-S mode or continuous AF-C mode, and each can be used in conjunction with Single Point AF, Zone AF, or Wide/Tracking AF settings. Additionally, AF-C Custom Settings let you choose from five AF-C presets depending on how your subject is moving, and the AF algorithm has been optimized for improved subject tracking and overall accuracy.
Film Simulation and Grain Effect Modes
Taking advantage of Fujifilm's vast history in traditional film-based photography, the X-E3 integrates several Film Simulation modes, which can be used for photos or videos, to mimic the look and feel of some of Fujifilm's classic film types. A refined Classic Chrome mode is designed to deliver muted tones and a deep color reproduction, similar to that of a dated slide film. Pulling from their more contemporary line of transparency films, Provia offers natural-looking tones for everyday shooting, Velvia produces a more dramatic and rich tonality with deeper color saturation, and Astia gives less contrast for a softer depiction of skin tones. Mimicking their negative films, Pro Neg. Std. gives smooth image tones that are suitable for accurate color renditions, while Pro Neg. Hi produces a more dramatic feel with the ability to draw color out of a variety of lighting conditions. In addition to the colorful benefits of these Film Simulation modes, there are also monochrome modes that simulate the look of traditional yellow, green, and red black and white contrast filters, as well as an Acros mode that can also be paired with colored filter effects. A sepia mode is also available for producing an inherently nostalgic look.

In addition to simulating specific film types, a Grain Effect mode is also available to replicate the look of old film photos with an organic textured appearance, which is especially noticeable when printing.
Other Camera Features
  • Advanced SR Auto mode can be used for fully automatic shooting with scene recognition to permit on-the-fly shooting in a variety of settings.
  • Multiple Exposure mode lets you shoot two consecutive overlaid frames, and the first frame will be shown on the rear LCD to aid in alignment for the second exposure.
  • In-camera 180° panoramas can be shot by simply panning the camera about the scene.
  • Advanced Filters: Toy Camera, Dynamic Tone, Miniature, High Key, Soft Focus, Pop Color, Low Key, and Partial Color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple).

    Fujifilm X-E3 reviews

X-E3 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost perfect I shoot a lot of Nikon DSLR's and have a number of Fuji X camera's as well. The X-E3 is by far my favorite. I have not found anything I cannot shoot with it and having the ability to quickly flip to video only makes it better. I shoot travel, concert, nature, products and a wide mix of everything. With the beautifully made Fuji lenses and excellent OIS on some of them you cannot go wrong. Personally not much I would change on the X-E3. As long as you are right eye dominant then the touch screen works as you would want. The size and weight are great. The image quality is superb. I plan on getting a second body just so I do not have to change lenses so often.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best!!!! The new Fuji camera has outdistanced all the previous gems this company has had to offer. If one has had prior experience with Fuji's products (I still own the XT20) then navigating the XE3 shouldn't be a problem. The frames I've shot live up to Fuji's high standards and the added benefit of using a joystick makes this a pleasurable experience. The camera handles well though I have had to turn off the touch screen program because I do a lot of candids and street photography and my fingers inadvertently manage to slip and change or interrupt the current display. I often shoot with the aperture wide open and am amazed at the low light capabilities of the XE3. The lack of an articulating LCD screen is a bit of an issue for me especially because of my mobility issues and though a separate flash unit is included in the package I would have much preferred having one already included as a part of the camera but I am able to adjust to the aforementioned disappointments because the main objective is, to quote David Bausch, ...get the picture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A knockout! This new addition to the Fuji family has every feature one can only dream of: great sensor, shooting modes, ability to shoot in low light situations without flash and all of these capabilities in one compact unit. Especially noteworthy is its ability to connect very easily via Bluetooth. I do miss the articulating LCD screen, though, especially with my mobility issues but so far I am ecstatically happy with the frames I have shot and printed?straight out of JPEG?so far. The elimination of an attached flash may also be of concern for some but a small one that serves well for fill in flash is included.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Upgrade for my X-E1 I chose the X-E1 (now obsolete) as the ideal camera for my purposes and in my price range - lightweight and compact, excellent lens set, great EVF and above all very good image quality at sensitivities to ISO 1600. When X-E3 came on the market I was faced with a degree of advancement in technical specs that I could not ignore: 50% higher resolution, still compact and even lighter, even better EVF and even better image quality at even higher sensitivities. And all these improvements were not marginal but substantial - so I had to upgrade. My sole kvetch is that while the ergonomics of the controls on X-E3 are generally an improvement over X-E1 (I like the front control dial) it is not as secure in hand, perhaps because of being slightly slimmer. I had installed a sturdier thumb rest on the X-E1 which helped balance the camera in hand but no such aid is available for X-E3.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A+! Another Incredible Fuji Product! After a 20 year incubation period, from point and shoot Canons, Nikons, and Sonys, I purchased the first variant of Fuji X100 in about 2012. Not quite satisfied, I migrated a couple of Fuji X iterations to the X-E3. WOW! Great camera! Simple and powerful! I love the fact I can change the shutter and ISO settings from a quick front-button push, and can tailor my settings from the Q-quick menu! And the online support of Fuji X supporters has been both an education and fun! This is my 2nd X-E3 of which I'll now begin professional shoots. The X-E3, with peak focusing, live view, and 100% EVF allow me to easily use the newer, high quality manual lenses coming out of Asia. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Fujifilm X-E3 Initial Comments Background -- Currently own Fujifilm X30 and Fujifilm X-Pro1 with 18mm f2 R and new 35mm f2 RWR Fujinon lenses... I tossed and turned a bit between X-E3 vs. X100F (new brown!) and various on-line reviews improved my consideration for X-E3 by itself... and then also in comparison with X100F. After not quite a month with X-E3 and the initial experience... I will say that I am completely delighted with the decision to take this route. The X-E3 physically falls right between the X30 and X-Pro1. So, IF compactness is a requirement... consider my comments here amongst those already posted about it fitting right in your palm... and then, in your pocket especially when mated with a "pancake" Fujinon lens. The features of this new generation Fuji is head and shoulders above the other models in my current collection. As with other - more experienced and established - evaluators, I, too, thoroughly enjoy the Focus Lever ("joystick") and the optimized menu. While I still hold room on my shelf for the X100T (brown!!!), I am absolutely enjoying this summer with the X-E3's new form factor, film simulations (Acros!!!!) and the ability to really exercise my pre-investment in my current Fuji lenses IF you are keen on a light and very portable package... but fully featured and offering performance right on the heels of the other Fujifilm "bigger hitter" models (X-T2 & X-Pro 2 etc...) I would think you will find this to be a fabulous choice! And... O yeah... B&H selection and delivery was top-notch... as always!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small and packs a punch I was looking for a small body for traveling and was considering a m4/3 but saw that the Fuji was not much bigger and can of course accommodate all of my fuji system lenses I have for my X-pro2. Decision was easy. Sensor performance very similar to X-pro2 with excellent resolution and low light performance. I do not miss the touch pad at all. I have not really gotten comfy with the touch screen either but I pretty much set things one time, and keep in Aperture priority and off I go. Any changes, I use the Q menu customized per my needs. Pretty simple for me. Have paired it up with the new 15-45 pancake for travel which is a decent lens for what it is... its not the 16-55 f2.8, but it's teeny and much better than the Sony 16-50 pancake which I had a few cameras back and found unusable. The only real negative for me with the X-E3 is that it does not have a movable LCD screen. For that I nick it down to a 4.5/5. Overall, I would say this is a good choice for an APS-C camera for someone who wants to keep it small and light.
