Sony RX0 overview

  • 1Description

The lightweight Sony RX0 Ultra-Compact Camera offers professional image quality in an action camera–sized form factor. Capable of outputting uncompressed 4K UHD video, it also records up to 1080p60 in-camera at 50 Mb/s in XAVC. A Zeiss 24mm-equivalent f/4.0 lens provides a wide, but not distorted, field-of-view. Its 21MP 1" stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor produces minimal rolling-shutter artifacts, and is protected by the RX0's waterproof, crushproof, and shockproof body. Use the versatile, diminutive RX0 as a single camera that fits almost anywhere, or for multi-camera recording, timecode-sync up to five cameras. When connected to a Wi-Fi router, greater than five cameras can be synced, suiting the RX0 for concerts, stunts, and other multi-camera applications. Camera control is offered via the Sony Play Memories smartphone app (iOS and Android).

A 1" Exmor RS CMOS sensor provides extended dynamic range and high-speed readout, even at super-slow motion rates of up to 960/1000 fps. This anti-distortion shutter features speeds up to 1/32000 per second, capable of freezing the action with minimal skew. Customize your image capture with multiple Picture Profiles, including the versatile S-Log2 gamma setting.

Internal recording options include 24/25/30/50 and 60 fps at 1080p, all at 50 Mb/s in the XAVC codec. Still photos can be captured in both raw and JPEG with shutter speeds as fast as 1/32,000/second, and in continuous-shooting bursts up to 16 fps. Uncompressed UHD 4K video is output via HDMI for capture to external recorders. The Sony RX0's additional pro-style features include manual- and auto-focus modes, a 20" minimum focus distance, S-Log2 recording, NTSC and PAL compatibility, and on-camera control buttons.

The Sony RX0 includes a rechargeable NP-BJ1 battery, an AC adapter, micro-USB cable, and wrist strap. The camera itself is waterproof down to 33', and can be used down to 330' with the optional MPK-HSR1 waterproof housing (available separately). The durable RX0 camera is also shockproof from impacts up to 6.5', and crushproof under weights up to 440 pounds.

    Sony RX0 reviews

    RX0 1.0"-Type Sensor Ultra-Compact Waterproof/Shockproof Camera is rated 2.6 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Amazing and Terrible The amazing: So cool and tiny. 4:2:2 4K image out of the HDMI out is worth way more than its current price point. Waterproof 1080p in Slog2 is pretty amazing, as well. The terrible: When connected to its app, it overheats almost instantly. The battery life is also terrible. The focus is miserable. Buy it if you have the cash. Don't buy it if you don't. I toss it in my kit to use as a C or D cam and will continue to do so despite it's many flaws. Sony will probably address some of these flaws in a firmware update.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from image quality in low light is BAD!!! I was waiting for this small beauty to replace all the bad action cameras that are available from GoPro and competitors. I was looking for a small HD camera with low light capabilities and with an external power option and video out plug. This 1 inch sensor for some reason gives very bad image quality inn low light (both in video and still modes). not sure why but the completion is poor and you can actually see the pixels blur... The unit is very easy to use with a typical sony menu that i love. changing modes from video to stills is not simple you have to go through the menu.... unfortunatly i will not recommend to buy this camera until they come out with some image quality improvements.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy it. Overheats, overpriced, overhyped I was pretty excited about this product, until I started using it. First off the menus are cumbersome to navigate on a tiny screen with tiny buttons. Users of other Sony cameras in the alpha series will find the menus familiar and will have an easier time, but still total hassle to figure out. Pairing with the play memories app, wasn't too bad, (though I am mildly concerned as to why I get so many warnings from iOS about the security of whatever profile it is installing). Keeping the camera paired with your device might also be a problem, and good luck re-pairing it in a rush on the teeny tiny screen. The image quality is fine I guess at 1080, definitely not a GoPro killer, but looks more professional and less fisheye-y. All of this stuff is mildly annoying but workable. I had to return this little guy though because it didn't really like to work. First time out of the box, in temperature controlled studio it started giving overheating warnings to the app. Mind you it wasn't even recording, just streaming back to the app in a 65 degree room. Then it crashed during the take. Stopped recording and turned off. it got too hot I guess. Oh well thank you BH for accepting this return. Sony please release finished products in the future.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Overheats Overheats in a 70 room within about 10 minutes, on standby. If this camera has desirable features, they don't count for anything, because it can't even stay on in normal conditions.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great little package, but too many compromises. Some thoughts after one week of use... -great image quality at base iso (125) -great robust construction. -not the same chip as used in the RX100 series as people had mentioned during the announcement. this one is only 15mp. -finally raw files in a camera of this size -no lens distortion -no PlayMemories apps. wish there was one for built in time-lapse. -f4 was probably chosen for balance of speed and depth of field on the 1 sensor, but its too slow for indoors and does not provide enough depth of field to keep everything in focus. -auto iso jumps to 6400 indoors. Probably why people are saying the image quality is terrible. -1/4 sec max shutter is not long enough for night shots without bumping iso. wish the had up to 30 secs like the other rx cameras. -no protective case / pouch provided. -no protective accessories at launch. I'm still waiting on the the filter adapter. -camera and accessories are extremely expensive -wish the battery was the same as the one used in the rx100 series as my older Sony action cam. now I have to carry an extra charger. it could easily be one for GoPro. -using a Vello timer remote, I was able to shoot for about 2 hrs with approximately 1250 shots. no way to have external power while using the micro USB port. -no lens stabilization. I'm assuming that's a mk II feature (along w/ internal 4k).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Such promise, such disappointment I am a huge fan of the Sony A7S and A7R cameras. I use them for all my videography, and most of my photography. I pre-ordered an RX0 as a replacement for my GoPro. I was so excited to get a high-quality image out of a tiny camera. My excitement was dashed immediately by an overheating shutdown about 6 minutes into my first recording. I let it cool down and tried again. Overheated again, in a 68-degree room. $700 for a camera that simply doesn't work? Please, Sony, please please please fix this in a firmware update. Please.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sony's new incomprehensible menu system. I feel like I'm deciphering an inscription on the walls of the Pyramid. You have to print the manual to decipher the meaning of these bizarro pictograms.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from bad for video the unit overheats in just about any environment and turns off. to me, this makes the unit unreliable and therefore USELESS. I'm returning it asap. should never waisted my time in the first place.
