Sound Devices MixPre 10T Overview

  • 1Description

The Sound Devices MixPre-10T is a high-resolution audio recorder with flexible routing, integrated USB audio streaming, timecode-generating abilities, clocking, and more. It can be used by field recordists, sound designers, podcasters, videographers, and musicians in various audio environments.

The MixPre-10T features Sound Devices' Kashmir ultra-low noise, discrete, and Class-A microphone preamps. Built with 32-bit A-to-D converters, this sound device ensures audio recordings surpass those of off-the-shelf, IC-based mic preamps. The unit can function as a USB audio interface and record audio to an SD card while simultaneously streaming multiple channels of audio via USB. Furthermore, the sunlight-readable color LCD of the MixPre-10 provides convenient navigation.

The MixPre-10T is constructed with a die-cast aluminum chassis, is lightweight, and sports a robust build. Also, it is relatively compact, making it well suited for jobs where portability is a plus.

Boasting intuitive operation and advanced mixing capabilities such as ergonomic gain-control knobs, pan and soloing, timecode connections in multiple formats, BNC I/O for clocking, 1/4"-20 mounting capacity, 3.5mm headphone monitoring, balanced TA3 outputs, and the AA battery/Sony L-Mount lithium-ion battery powering options, the MixPre-10T is sure to meet all your audio-application needs.

Solid Audio Quality
Featuring eight handcrafted, high-performance, ultra-low-noise, discrete, Class-A Kashmir microphone preamps, the MixPre-10T has a -130 dBV noise floor, analog limiters, and 32-bit A-to-D converters. These features ensure quality audio recordings. The MixPre-10T's pre-roll feature captures ten seconds of audio before the record button is pressed, ensuring the capture of crucial audio even when the operator can't start recording fast enough.
Accurate Timecode Generator/Reader with Wordclock
The MixPre-10T features a built-in, accurate timecode generator and reader. Even when turned off, or when all power is removed, the MixPre-10T continues to hold accurate timecode for hours, long enough for lunch breaks and other pauses in the daily schedule. With its BNC, Aux, and HDMI timecode connections, all common frame rates and timecode modes are supported, as is the ability to synchronize with/output wordclock, making it suitable for the digital audio environment.
Flexible Powering
The MixPre-10T sports multiple powering options, such as a locking 4-pin Hirose connector (10 to 18V) for external battery power, or AC power (with the optional AC adapter). Like the MixPre-3 & MixPre-6, the MixPre-10T can also be powered from AA batteries in a convenient detachable sled of eight cells, or via an optional sled that offers powering from up to two hot-swappable Sony L-Mount lithium-ion batteries.
Flexible I/O Routing
The MixPre-10T offers eight XLR/TRS combo Mic/Line level inputs, as well as a 3.5mm Aux/Mic input that can be used for 2-channel line input, camera return, or timecode. Also provided are two TA3 balanced outputs and a 3.5mm Stereo output, each with its own routing matrix; this further bolsters routing flexibility.
Auto Copy
With this feature, you can record files up to 192 kHz/24-bit to an SD card, while automatically copying to a USB thumb drive (USB Type-A) for handing off to a client (or as a backup copy).
Mixing, Metering, and Monitoring
The MixPre-10T incorporates a simple mixer that offers gain-control knobs and access to panning and soloing via a simple press of the knob. For metering, the unit provides easy-to-read ring LEDs with limiter activity, along with three LCD views for multitrack, mix, and USB-return metering. The MixPre-10T also includes a 3.5mm jack for headphone monitoring with user-programmable routing presets.
Ambisonics Integration
Upon installation of the free Ambisonics plug-in (from the Sound Devices Plug-In Store), field recordists, game developers, and VR content creators will appreciate the support for simultaneous multi-format recording (AmbiX, FuMa, LR Stereo, and LR Binaural), real-time binaural/stereo monitoring, and A-Format, B-Format, and A- to B-Format conversion.
Wireless Control and Workflow
The MixPre-10T features integrated Bluetooth Smart for easy wireless connection, control, and metering via the free Sound Devices Wingman app (compatible with iOS and Android devices). It also allows you to manage and create sound reports, and, via Wingman, email those reports directly from a mobile device.
USB Audio Interface
The MixPre-10T doubles as a USB audio interface with 12 inputs and four outputs, communicating with computers at sample rates of up to 96 kHz. The unit also sports the ability to record to an SD card while simultaneously streaming audio via USB.
USB Control Surface Support
Control fader, trim (gain), pan, low-cut filtering, reverb, record, stop, and more from the Korg nanoKONTROL Studio, Korg nanoKONTROL2, Akai MIDImix, or Novation Launch Control XL USB control surfaces (all available separately).

    Sound Devices MixPre 10T Reviews

    MixPre-10T Multi-Channel Audio Recorder is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tiny powerhouse I have been waiting for a mixer like this for a while. ?Another Sound Devices marvel. ?Just used it for the first time on a job last week. ?Clean pre-amps, easy to use interface. ?I love that I can use as a USB interface and record at the same time. ?Amazing mixer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Sound, Portable, Some Issues I purchased the MixPre 10T as a mobile recording device. Sound Devices is known for high quality mic pres, and the 10T does not disappoint in this regard. You can record up to 10 tracks of live audio plus the L/R mix, for a total of 12 tracks. When recording to an SD card, the format is BWV in a poly-channel wrapper. Use DAW software to unwrap the channels for mixing. Note that the poly-channel order is L,R, 1-10.? You can also record all 12 channels to a DAW through an USB-C cable, simultaneously with recording to an SD card, to mono tracks. Levels in Advanced Mode use two stages, trim and fader. The SD card is recorded pre-fader, but the DAW records only the 10 input channels, post-fader only. Changing the front dials on the 10T affects the DAW record levels. Pre-fader recording is generally preferred, and Sound Devices is taking it under consideration. The 10T panel displays LR tracks after mixing, but pre-fade levels by channel. The 10T has analog limiters and low-cut filters ahead of the analog stage. They will not prevent digital overloading, so watch the levels. I insert digital limiters in the DAW to prevent digital overload when needed (e.g., drums). Channels can be set to mic, line, and other options. The connectors are XLR with a concentric TRS jack. Both the XLR and TRS are in the same mode. You must set that manually. Power is flexible - 12 v Hirose (preferred), 4 or 8 AA battery sled, or a 1,2 L battery sled. The 8 battery sled lasts little over an hour for 8 channels with phantom power. The L batter sled is bulky, but lasts 6-8 hours. Batteries take over automatically if someone trips on the cord, but external power won't charge batteries in the sled (unlike the 788). The Touch Screen is needed to set up the 10T, and is very small. The BlueTooth remote app, "Wingman", displays levels and allows file naming and start/stop/record operations only, not setup or levels. The BT signal is very week, roughly good for 15 feet, line-of-sight. 10Ts can be daisy-chained via Time Code to record/stop from the master unit. This feature also works with other recorders with a Time Code trigger. That means 16+ channels in a 5 pound package!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CLVS The Sound Devices Mix Pre- 10T is everything imaged for a field mixer, but it’s more because of the multichannel recorder. I freelance as a Certified Legal Video Specialist for Court Reporting, Litigation and Law Firms. ?We record depositions and focus groups and also build presentations for mediations, settlements and courtroom proceeding. The Mix Pre- 10T allows us to set Gain, Volume, Pan, Phantom Power, Mic Input, Low Cut filter and record each microphone to a different audio track. The settings may be saved as Presets to the unit or SD card. This method of recording is important because many times Attorneys will be making an objection as questions are being asked and both should be recorded to present a complete record. However, a clean record to present to the judge and jury is also important and must be accomplished without changing the audio/visual recording with a date and time stamp. The MixPre-10T is a solution for this because this unit has a record trigger from the camera output via HDMI or SDI timecode and it is capable of sending a timecode to an external recording unit. Therefore, we can select the Witness and the questioning attorney’s audio tracks to make a clip of a specific line of questions. ?We can also use the stereo tracks as a guide and confirm the spoken word.? ? The Mix Pre-10T has professional connections i.e. XLR audio inputs and outputs to send to a video camera or Audio – Video mulita-format mixer, and BNC in/out for the timecode. That’s coupled with a Low-Cut filter and Peak Limiter to improve the sound quality. This increases the quality of your audio recording and we enables us to offer that additional service to our clients. The unit records to its SD card and backup recording to a thumb drive simultaneously which saves setup time, and eliminates backup audio equipment. Today our video deposition setup is a tripod, MixPre-10T (audio mixer/multichannel recorder), video camera, Video Devices PIX-E5 (video monitor/recorder), and on camera adjustable light. ?This eliminates the need for a table top to sit external equipment.? Record and back-up the video and the audio just by pressing one button to trigger the units. I enjoy my setup because of less equipment to move, good video and audio mixing and recording. ?The backup recording looks and sounds as good as the main units. ? ? Lorenzo H

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing! Lacks Easy Channel Control I love this little box. For the price you cant beat it!  Preamps sound incredibly good even cranked up on ribbon mics.  The touch screen surprised me with how responsive it it.  Better than my iphone even! Love the USB support for DAWs and fashdrive backup.  So many great features!!! The big complaint for me is controlling and selecting things in the menu is awkward.  You have to use the headphone gain but it is very hard to reach and find without looking.  It is nearly impossible to get to it if it is in a field bag.  Ill deal with the headphone dial control issue though because the box is so great for everything else.   Oh the app is great and connects without any effort.  It be awesome if you could control channel settings from the app...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top quality multi-track recorder I purchased the MixPre-10T a few months ago and have been using it to record a live podcast--host and guests, plus musicians, in front of a live audience, at various locations.? I have found it to be a big improvement over the cheaper digital recorders I had been using. The mic pre's are quieter, the headphone amp is much better and the ergonomics of the machine are well adapted to live recording, once you figure out how to set it up properly. The built-in limiters are excellent--they only make their presence known if you set the input level much too loud.? With levels anywhere near properly set, they catch the occasional peak inaudibly.? The short story is, this recorder delivers excellent sound quality with little effort in real world conditions. Minor criticisms: It does take some study of the manual and work with the MixPre-10 to learn how to best set it up and use it in particular situations.? However, after using it a bit, I have found it to be designed very logically and easy enough to use in the heat of live recording.? It is also a rather power hungry recorder--I usually run it off the AC power adapter which, fortunately, is more robust than the wall warts supplied with cheaper recorders.? It is possible to run it off 8 AA batteries for shorter jobs, provided you go for good quality rechargeable types. (Alkaline AA's don't cut it with this recorder.) However, if you are using phantom power or doing longer jobs, the AA option is not the way to go--you are better off with L-ion rechargeables or external power sources.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great 8-channel preamp and stereo mixer with timecode sync My video are often long multi-camera events and require having lavalier mics on a few performers and master-of-ceremonies - typically using 3 remote receivers into XLR ports, 2 remote receivers through a mixer into the AUX input, and two shotgun mics on boom poles with long cords into powered XLR ports. The recorder still has room for three more sound inputs when needed. Caveats: 1. Set up a project before recording in order to save sound to a USB file. No project = no USB file. 2. Use a large memory stick and SD card so that the recorder auto-formats in exFAT, I went with 128GB for large unbroken WAV files. 3. The Wingman WIFI App has limited range, about 20 feet tested in an electrically noisy environment at 1.25 gauss. 4. The Wingman App cannot adjust individual channel input gain for when the talent of off-camera. with a live mic! 5. Use AC when possible, use 230a/HR battery otherwise.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Generally, it has a lot going for it. Not perfect. I am a 30 year plus working video professional. I shoot with the Sony FS7. I shoot and serve as an audio operator for other shooters on program segments for NBC, CBS and ABC, as well as for many, many corporate clients. The first use of this mixer was on a 6 person interview for MSNBC, and it performed well. I had to feed multiple cameras and used mic splitters to accomplish that. The next use was on a corporate job with only a one person interview. Again, it performed well. The third job was single person interviews and feeding multiple cameras. This time I used the X1/X2 output connector on the left side of the mixer. After arriving at the third location of the day, I noticed the plug that was inserted into the X1/X2 connector was loose. Upon inspection I found the outside of the connector had broken loose from the inside of the mixer. It basically just came apart. Fortunately, it continued to work electronically, so I used it to finish the day. I purchased this unit on October 4th. When I contacted Sound Devices they said they would repair it, but if it was deemed damaged, it would not be covered by warranty. The mixer was not roughly handled and has spent it's young life tucked in a Porta-Brace bag. There was no apparent reason for the connector to break. That being said, the unit has many features that attracted me to it, especially for the price. Having 8 mic preamps, 12 tracks of recording and timecode in and out were the main reasons I bought it. It is tiny. I would call it a sub-compact unit, about half the thickness and weight of my 552. IF it holds up over the long haul, then it will be an excellent buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fantastic super portable recording machine. This is one piece of gear that I can truly say has changed the way I work on-location for the better. Not only do the mic-pres sound spectacular, which is the main reason I bought this unit, it also is beautifully laid out, robustly constructed and extremely functional in tight spaces. Its very easy to setup and quick to tear down after the gig. The touchscreen is very readable and quick to respond. The iOS/Android app is a very useful remote control/logger. Looking forward to seeing them add some more control functions. It can also be a bit unstable at times leading to crashes. Even when the app crashes though, it never disturbs the unit from the state that it was in so no dropping out of record because the app crashed. Its a good app that shows promise, just needs some more development time. Ive run the unit full-out, TC synced, at 96k and there was nary a hiccup or hesitation in how it performed. The USB backup does take a little extra time to transfer all of the data from the SD card so that is the only thing to be aware of before you pack your gear up. I mainly record live classical and folk concerts using a wide variety of microphones and they all sound very clear and clean through the Kashmir preamps. These are not character preamps, they are very precise but not clinical. A perfect balance in my opinion. My main array is the Royer SF24 which this unit handles with aplomb. What I am hearing through the phones is what I hear on playback.  I also use it as my DAW front end when Im on the road and while some routing flexibility is lacking compared to a stand alone interface, I never feel that I cant trust what Im hearing back.  If you are in the market for this type of device and need it super portable, great sounding  and reliable, do not hesitate to purchase the MixPre-10T.
