Not smooth at all.
I got this to support my d850 w 400 2.8 on a monopod to be more of a support than a full on stabalizer. With that said it works OK but it is not smooth whatsoever. I know i have a heavy rig but it seems like the bearings are just loose and grinding around in the housing. I'd like to see if I can take it apart and inject thick grease in it to make it smoother. Would give 2 stars if it were more expensive. In all it is decent but I will eventually wind up spending more money on an upgrade.
Excellent Gimbal, though slightly heavy
I haven't yet tested it in the field, but balancing was very easy after watching Steve Perry's video on it. I am using it with a z8 and z18-600 w/without a 1.4x tele. Initially I thought I might need the longer face plate, but was able to balance it with the provided smaller plate. I am using it with standard Nikon foot that came with the lens which has a smaller 1/4 hole and one larger one. The gimbal comes with two bushings which are installed on the base plat which make the bolts look 3/8 and for a while I was wondering what to do when I realized that the bushing was screwed on. Removing and moving the 1/4 bolt to the other slot made it fit to the small plate that came with the gimbal. I found I could remove the heads of my existing tripods/monopods and attach the gimbal. Can't wait to try it in the field.
