Kodak AZ401 Overview

As part of the Astro Zoom Collection, the black PIXPRO AZ401 Digital Camera from Kodak is distinguished by a long-reaching 40x zoom along with versatile recording capabilities. A 16.15MP CCD sensor enables recording high-resolution stills and HD 720p video, as well as an expandable sensitivity range from ISO 80-3200 for working in a variety of lighting conditions. The expansive zoom covers a 24-960mm equivalent focal length range for working with subjects both near and far, and optical image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The rear of the camera features a 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor and four AA batteries are used as a convenient source of power.

A 16.15MP 1/2.3" CCD sensor produces high-resolution stills and HD 720p/30 video, along with a sensitivity range of ISO 80-1600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. This can be extended to ISO 3200 when recording 4MP images for working in low-light conditions.
A long-reaching 40x optical zoom lens provides a 24-960mm equivalent focal length range, covering wide-angle to super-telephoto perspectives, and 4x digital zoom is also available to further extend the effective reach.
Optical image stabilization is available to minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions or with longer focal lengths.
Rear 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor is available for composing and reviewing imagery, as well as for navigating the menu system.
180° Panorama mode lets you take sweeping images by simply panning the camera to create a wide-field composition.
Face, Smile, Blink, Cat, and Dog detection modes can be used to optimize shooting settings to capture perfect portraits and pet pictures.
Both single and multi, 9-point autofocus modes can be used, and Face Detection AF is also available to prioritize subjects' faces when shooting portraits.
Built-in flash provides additional illumination when working in low-light conditions.
Four AA batteries are used as a convenient power source and offer approximately 280 shots per fresh set of batteries.

Kodak AZ401 Reviews

Nice little camera - but no charging!!

Camera works nice - I don't zoom to extremes, which seems a little grainy. PLUSES: Easy to use and download photos. Design for manual modes easy and intuitive Negatives: NO in camera battery recharging. This is a big one for me, as I want to be sure my batteries are always charged and IN the camera

Love it !!!

Unfortunately it looks like I will be returning this camera as ever set of batteries you install it says are dead. Even though it turns on and appears to function, the camera does not save pictures when it thinks the batteries are too low. It appears to be a firmware issue as I was able to adjust setting, scroll through menus, and even zoom in and out numerous times over the course of about half an hour with the camera turning off. Sadly I failed to read the reviews before purchasing or I would have seen this is a very common issue. How could something like this get through quality control? I bet if I wanted to purchase Lipo batteries for it I would have better luck, but then that would defeat the purpose of buying this camera. (The allure of the ability to use off the shelf batteries in a pinch, unfortunately off the shelf batteries won't work in the camera (at least no the cheaper ones/standard Duracell)).

Just what I needed!

I had not owned a standalone camera since 2005, because when smartphones came, they were actually better for point and shoot. But after recently getting into birds, I decided I needed a real camera with zoom, so I did some research. I knew (from my astronomy hobby) that cameras with smaller sensors struggle with low light (and its aggravated at longest zoom), but the cameras with larger sensors are a lot more expensive, (and tend to require larger/heavier lenses). So I was not expecting Pro DSLR performance, just something good enough for casual birding. This kodak camera delivered just what I needed. The 40x optical zoom is great for getting close up to birds without them flying away. Heres too snapshots from yesterdays birding trip (taken at full 40x zoom in auto mode). Focusing at 40x takes some learning (and its not very fast), and the continuous shooting gatling mode is a little dark/noisy (I ended up just taking normal stills), but its definitely good enough for what I wanted: casual birding. About batteries: I chose the 401 over the 421 because of the AA batteries. Tip: on settings menu, set screen brightness to -2, and very important: when using rechargable batteries, set battery type to NiMH on the menu, because rechargables are lower voltage (if you dont set this correctly, the camera cant tell a half-full rechargable from a discharged alkaline). With those two settings and eneloop rechargables Ive had no issues. Yous probably enjoy this camera if your budget cant stretch beyond $150 and you want a camera for: daytime outdoor use with good light, quality superzoom, optical image stabilization for hand-holding it, compact and lighweight for carrying along with binos on birding hikes, AA batteries for reliability/replaceability (have you ever had to replace a perfectly good smartphone just because its built in lithium battery cant hold charge anymore?). I wouldnt get it for shooting night weddings, bur for my style of birding, its great!

Tremendous Bang for the Buck Ratio

I bought a red one a few years back and have now over 10,000 pictures with it, so I actually flipped the numbering file system on it (think like so many miles that the odometer flips). Absolutely love it. If you are comparing this to a camera that cost over a thousand dollars, then that is ridiculous because you can't compare a sports car to an F1 racer. But that doesn't mean that I'm not thrilled to see the images that I get and that this camera brought me so much happiness seeing wildlife up close, and with great clarity and image quality! Of course this camera doesn't have a huge sensor like a $3,000 unit, so lighting will be important. But it has taken great shots even when my eyes couldn't see. I only wish it had a viewfinder, I love all its other features though. I sometimes use it with a monopod for increased stability. Kodak actually licenses its name to JK Imaging, and from my experience with this camera, JK Imaging made a great name for itself to me. I think that they made the right selection for battery type also! 4 AA batteries, very easy to obtain, recharge, very versatile. Like I said, at 10,500 pictures, I think I got my money's worth! And it is still looking and working like new!
