Canon M50 overview

  • 1Description

Comprising a versatile feature-set to suit both stills and video applications, the black EOS M50 Mirrorless Digital Camera from Canon separates itself from the pack with UHD 4K video recording, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, and improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Eye Detection AF. Utilizing a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 image processor, improved Auto Lighting Optimizer helps to ensure clean image quality with low noise, along with top 10 fps shooting rate and a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600, which can be extended to ISO 51200 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor and processor combination also enables UHD 4K video recording at 23.98 fps, along with Full HD 1080p60 and HD 720p120 for slow motion capture. The sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which uses phase-detection autofocus for quick, accurate, and smooth performance to suit both stills and video use. Additionally, Combination IS 5-axis image stabilization also helps to realize steady, shake-free recording by minimizing the appearance of camera shake.

Complementing the imaging attributes, the EOS M50 also incorporates a 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.0" touchscreen LCD for intuitive control. The screen's vari-angle design permits working from high and low working angles and its touchscreen interface allows working with Touch and Drag AF for easier manipulation of the AF area. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC is available for quick and convenient pairing with a smartphone or tablet for wireless image sharing, and Bluetooth is also featured for image sharing to and remote camera control from a mobile device.

24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor
Both a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible ISO 100-25600 range, with an expandable ISO 51200 setting, suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise and afford Auto Lighting Optimizer for notable clarity in various shooting situations. UHD 4K video recording is also supported at 23.98 fps, along with Full HD 1080p60 and HD 720p120 settings for slow motion recording. Additionally, the processor affords a 10 fps continuous shooting rate, fast camera startup time, and short interval times between each frame for a more intuitive and efficient shooting process.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. Eye Detection AF can also be used for portraiture, and helps to prioritize focus on a subject's eye for ensured sharpness.

When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
Combination IS
Combination IS uses the built-in 5-axis digital image stabilization in conjunction with lens-based image stabilization systems to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This benefits recording while walking or moving, and can also be used in conjunction with lenses featuring optical IS for more effective overall stabilization.
Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
  • Large 3.0" touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a vari-angle to better enable working from high and low angles.
  • Integrated 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder permits bright, clear eye-level monitoring and also permits working with Touch and Drag AF for manually moving the AF area while shooting with the EVF for more intuitive control.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick, automatic image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • Built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination for working in low-light conditions. A hot shoe is also available for working with an optional external flash for greater control.

Canon M50 reviews

EOS M50 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small and handy Being the owner of 2 big Nikon cameras, I wanted something small and light to take with me when I walk. I explored Nikon stuff and nothing fit the bill for me. At first, I was interested in the new Olympus M-10 but when Canon came out with the M50, I felt that the Canon was more of what I was looking for. It's lacking some features I'm used to but heck, For all the other goodies it does have, It suits my walking needs. One thing though; If you're used to the Nikon system, it's kind of puzzling at first. It takes a learning curve. And by the way; Canon picture sharpness is awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bang for the buck Right off the bat: * If you're looking for a replacement for your FF DSLR, look elsewhere. * If you're looking to do extensive videography, especially 4K, look elsewhere. * If you need a rugged, weather sealed body, look elsewhere. However: If you want a lightweight, compact camera you can take where the DSLR would be to bulky, and yet still desire the image quality of a large sensor and flat out the best AF system at this price point, this is it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hi-speed continuous setting is awful! This camera takes very good pictures, but if you are wanting it for something in motion (sports/wildlife), it isn't an option. Depending on the lens I used, I could only get between 4 and 7 shots before it said it was busy. Tried a high speed sd card and that didn't help. Not sure if it is poor communication with the lens or what (I tried 2 different Tamron lenses and 1 Canon lens).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results on a budget I use this almost exclusively for video with a sigma art 18-35. It gives me a great image in a really small package. I have it on a crane 2 frequently and the size paired with the amazing dual pixel AF makes for a great gimbal set up. I also have rokinon cine lenses and having focus peaking for manual focus is a huge plus. I use the 1080/60p quite often for slow motion. I also like the built in time lapse function. Two words of caution when shooting 4K: the crop factor is very significant (I think 2.45x), and the rolling shutter in 4K is very bad. Also, the dual pixel AF does not work in 4K, and the contrast based AF that is available in 4K is unusable. I wouldn't use the 4K for any action shots or anything with a lot of movement because of the rolling shutter issues. However, I am happy with the quality of the 4K for interviews/talking head where there isn't much motion, and I always use manual focus with peaking turned on. I shoot this type of stuff every single week at work and I've gotten great results. Buy this camera. It has a ton of features for a great price. It will absolutely come in handy whether it's your only camera or you have others, the M50 will always have something to offer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great general use camera Great little camera that I use as a second body to my much bulkier 5d mark iv setup. IMO, the best two lenses for this camera is 22mm and the new ef-m 32mm f1.4. In fact, for most people you it would be all you need. The new 32mm is a very high IQ image especially suitable for family photography and dramatic portraits. M50 has all important functions of a much more expensive camera except for limited physical controls. Although the excellent touchscreen certainly alleviates that. This is a great camera for those who don't need to change settings all the time. IQ for stills and video is very good with the above mentioned lenses. Also works great with inexpensive EF 50STM lens with eos m adapter. Video AF is outstanding. 4k quality is very good but I don't use it due to 24p limitation (I prefer 30p). I can deal with the absence of AF and crop in 4k but not the frame rate limit. - High quality solid build (Made in Japan) - Excellent articulating touchscreen - Outstanding out of camera colors: my recommendation: use AWB-W and reduce contrast setting in Standard picture profile. - Excellent AF implementation for stills and video - Very good and large EVF - Digital movie IS is surprisingly effective and I see no impact on video quality (just make sure you don't walk while filming) - Excellent audio quality. The best audio I've ever seen out of any camera or phone. Clear, full, low noise stereo sound that it sounds better than my external Rode micro mic. - Access to reasonably priced and small EF-M lenses: 22mm, 32mm, 11-22mm to name the most useful ones. Plus with the adapter you can use 50STM that works great for stills and video with M50, better than on dslr. - battery life has not been an issue for me. I have three batteries and have yet to use more than two. You can get at least 1hr video and 100+ shots on a single battery. Or at least 400+ stills.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vince Marino I used the camera several times already. I got super images, and it's easy to navigate through the camera's menu. The adapter is also an easy hook up to use with any EF lens. The tripod bracket on the camera lens area is also, in my opinion, a neat feature no other camera has.
