Sigma 35mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing an immensely versatile focal length with a bright maximum aperture, the Sony E-mount 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens from Sigma is a wide-angle prime characterized by its advanced optical design. The combination of one F Low Dispersion (FLD) element and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements help to achieve a marked reduction in chromatic aberrations, while a pair of aspherical elements, with one positioned in the rear of the lens, minimize a variety of additional distortions and aberrations. A Super Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements, too, to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, the f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subject matter.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Standard wide-angle lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
One FLD element and four SLD elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

    Sigma 35mm f/1.4 reviews

35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Sony E is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have the Sony 35mm/2.8 and still get the Sigma I shoot environmental portraits, dance competitions and some weddings. I have the a7ii and a6500. My Sony 35mm/2.8 is an awesome lens, but the 2.8 is not as fast as I need for the competitions. When I received the Sigma, I did a quick environmental shoot with it - WOW! First, this lens is sharp - I mean freakously sharp wide open. Second, autofocus is fast, and I didn't even use Eye AF. Third, the image quaily of this lens is phenomenal - contrast is great, color is lush (but not over saturated), and distortion is at a limit. When you throw in the price point, this is the best 35mm for the Sony e-mount to date.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible AF Oh wow- the autofocus is that bad. Grrr Sigma! Super frustrating as I waited for this Lens forever!!! I knew they had autofocus problems but this is a whole other story. Missed every single shot of my kid. Every. Single. One. Even when I had her just stand there. It's that bad folks. But with manual focus, the sharpness is unreal. Real bummed out. I don't know whether to keep it till they do an update (if that would even work?) or return and take my chances with the Sony 35 1.4 which everyone knows has a whole different set of problems. Come on people- with this much money being spent on lens- how about a little QC! Rant over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens I usually don't waste my time writing reviews, but it annoys me when I see ignorant people tarnish otherwise good reputations. I bought this lens from my local camera store, because I think it's important to support your local brick & mortar camera shop (they even paid my tax). Regarding the lens, it produces a fantastic image. Extremely sharp, great color rendition, beautiful bokeh and the auto focus is extremely good. That includes Eye AF and flexible spot in both continuous and single shot af modes. I have not tested it for video, but for stills, this is a fantastic lens. The build quality is excellent. The seal on my A7RII is even better than my GM lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprised at the focus issues. I'm very surprised with the focus issues that people are having with this lens. I am using it on a Sony A7RIII and have used it for roughly 1500 frames (including a long wedding). The only problems with focus that I have had were with high speed subjects where the focus point wasn't already locked on. Everything still and slow moving has had a hit rate of 100% and is perfectly sharp wide open. It would be nice to know what cameras everyone is using when having issues. I don't doubt their findings, but I am curious.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sharp, but AF is pretty bad. So, I was going to pick this lens up, but had a chance to play with one a friend got. The lens is sharp, with acceptable levels of CA (especially considering the other 35 mm options available for sony FE right now), and vignetting, but the AF is bad... really bad, like not even up to Rokinon level bad. I thought it might be a one off and told my friend to send it back, but perusing the reviews they all seem to say the same. For now I am going to hold off on this and wait to see if Sigma fixes things with an update. Otherwise shelling out the extra $700 for the Sony/Zeiss offering might be a requirement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well with A7iii Got this lens the day it came out.. Had it for my D4/D750 with the nikon mount and loved it also. Been shooting my kids for the past few days and have had great success. eye AF works every time with them as well as face priority tracking when they are running with faces in my direction. I also tested this last night outside (lower than usual light as the sun set already) . in 1.4 is did fantastic at a distance of keeping majority of my sons body in focus.. as he was bouncing around the frame it would constantly pick up his face and keep him in focus. During the day I will retry this at 2.8+ to see if I can do even better with them. Overall I am happy with this lens and do recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish this came out sooner - thank goodness it's here I've been waiting MONTHS for this lens. Not necessarily because of B&H (although, they grossly underestimated fulfillment time by nearly a month - which was super annoying) but because Sigma never made anything for Sony. I debated going with an adapter but I'm glad I waited for this lens. I've been shooting product photography with a Zeiss 55 1.8 and I'll tell you one thing, this lens is way better all around with a smaller price tag than anything Zeiss. If you have the money, buy it. Some other sites will even price-match.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't believe the hype. Preordered this way back in March hoping it would be the Grail that I was looking for in the Sony 35mm 1.4 dept but alas it surely is not. (Used on Sony A7riii and A7iii for testing) The autofocus in continuous is ok for stills but for video is completely unusable, tacking is very slow and doesn't come back into focus for a while. Autofocus in AFS seems actually worse that AFC which is just crazy to me constantly felt like I was hitting marks but the results were less than stellar. When I finally switched to DMF mode I got decent results but I don't need another manual lens so back it goes. Hopefully with some firmware updates it'll be better but for now I can't justify it as a viable piece of kit.
