The 536 to 608 MHz version of the Sony UWP-D11 Integrated Digital Wireless Bodypack Lavalier Microphone System features all-metal construction, easy to read LCD displays, wide switching RF bandwidth, USB power and charging, automatic channel scanning, infrared synchronization between transmitter and receiver, Mic/Line switchable input on the bodypack transmitter, true diversity receiver, PLL-synthesized tuning, headphone output on the receiver, output gain controls on the receiver for optimizing the input level into a camera, and digital companding circuitry. The package is suitable for a wide range of wireless applications such as ENG, documentary work, talk shows, conferences, and more.

The system is referred to as integrated digital because the transmitter and receiver utilize DSP for digital companding and expanding of the transmission signal. Performing the companding and expanding processes in the digital domain improves the accuracy and transient response of the received audio.

The camera-mountable receiver features true-diversity technology, which stabilizes reception and minimizes RF interference by using dual antenna input/reception circuits and selecting the strongest incoming signal. The angle of the antennas is also adjustable to improve reception when the receiver is mounted on top of a camera or camcorder. The system utilizes UHF Phase Locked Loop (PLL) synthesis to lock the phase of the transmission frequency between transmitter and receiver. The receiver can automatically search for an available transmission frequency and link the desired frequency to the transmitter via infrared connection.

A stereo mini-jack output with monitor volume control is included, and both stereo mini and stereo XLR cables are provided. The unit also includes a headphone monitor output for use with cameras and camcorders that don't have a monitor output. An LCD display provides channel and frequency information, battery life, RF-input level, audio output status and accumulated operating time.

For power, the receiver operates on two AA batteries for up to 6 hours, or on 5 VDC of USB power over a USB micro-B cable. The USB connection can also be used to recharge Ni-MH rechargeable batteries within the battery cartridge. The receiver's compact design and included shoe-mount adapter allows easy mounting to most camcorders and interchangeable lens system cameras.

The improved bodypack transmitter features a mic- and line-level switch for standard wired microphone or line-level sources. Selectable transmission output power provides a choice between 5mW output, which is suitable for simultaneous multi-channel operation, or 30mW output for long-distance transmission.

The transmitter can operate for up to 8 hours on two AA-size alkaline batteries, be powered or recharged via USB micro-B connection, and features a comprehensive LCD display.

The system comes with an omnidirectional lavalier microphone, a windscreen for the microphone, a microphone holder clip, two belt clips, a shoe-mount adapter, a mini to mini stereo cable, and a mini to XLR cable. Optional accessories such as a battery case and soft case for the receiver are sold separately.

    Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's Just Okay I bought this system when it first came out because the price was cut a hundred dollars and I wanted another wireless unit to go with my URX-P2/UTX-B2 system. The sound into my Sony EX-1R was tinnier sounding than my older system. Then, after less than frequent uses, it stopped working. It powered up but didn't get a signal no matter what frequency I used. I took it to an audio repair shop and they said it had some internal problems and I would have to send it to Sony. Knowing that Sony repairs are pricey, I decided to buy a used URX-P2/UTX-B2 system instead as my second unit. For now, the unit just sits here as I decide what to do with it.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a wireless system that works I own a Evolution series wireless lav from Sennheiser and I picked one of these up because I wanted to try another brand. I'm happy with the Sennheisers but I think the design of the Sony wireless lavs may be slightly better for the money. First off I get better range out of the Sony wireless system. Second, the battery life on the Sony system is a bit better. Thirdly, Sony offers frequency ranges that are below the FCC restructuring plan scheduled to go into full effect within a few years. That being said they produce great sound work well and are at a price point that doesn't break the bank.

    Rated 2 out of 5 by from Appending My Earlier Review Having now worked more with this bodypack system, I'm going to mention a problem that makes it less desirable to me as a lav unit compared with a Sennheiser G3... it has noticeably more noise/hiss than the G3. I've tried every configuration I could to optimize the noise to good audio ratio, and it always added more noise/hiss to the recording. It's not a lot and is barely noticeable when the volume isn't cranked up, but it is there. It's a shame, because just about everything else is superior to the G3's. But quality of sound is number one.

It has Metal walls, dirt/composite floor, and a metal ceiling with insulated backing. This is a BIG BIG Open Space! In conjunction with the Yamaha STAGEPAS 400i Portable PA System, with One Speaker set up at one corner (where folks set along a short end to Audit the Training) and the other Speaker about mid way down the length of the Arena, this Sony Mic system, this provides Excellent Sound through out the Arena. Easily set up and taken down for storage. Plug and Play. Using Energizer Ultimate Lithium Batteries, we're getting 4 to 5 8+ hour days of use.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use I am a novice videographer, but needed a wireless mic setup for field use in industrial enviroments. In my limited experience with the microphone system so far, it was easy to get set up and operating. The range, freedom from interference and audio quality are good for my application. Displays are easy to read. Visual battery indication on the displays is convenient. The only problem I have is that the receiver will not attach to the recessed shoe on my Sony FDR-AX100 camcorder. The belt clips made from small diameter wire look flimsy, but have held up okay so far. Thanks to B&H for the tip on how to check which frequencies you should select for your area!

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good Unit I got one of these sets in this frequency range for an indy feature I was on. This helped to round out my one Senny G3 and three G2's. First a little back story about my G3. I had been noticing that my G3 was dropping out and getting what sounded like RF hits quite a bit, even when fairly close to the transmitter. On one beach shoot I had to adjust my position to have the TX in my RX's line of sight to stop the drop-outs. No matter what I did (change frequencies, change lavs, tighten connections, etc.), I couldn't shake the problems except to be fairly close and have line-of-sight to the TX. On this latest film shoot, we had a scene where the two main actors would walk along a stream bed towards the camera (and me) from about 90 feet away. One actor wore the G3, one the Sony. As you can imagine, the G3 dropped out a lot during the walk in, but the Sony was perfect, even though the TX was positioned behind the actor's body. From that point on I relied on the Sony UWP-D11 as my main, go-to wireless for the rest of the shoot. I like the menu structure which, when I got used to it, is easy to adjust quickly. Love the dual adjustable antennas on the RX, not so happy with the combo power/mute button on the TX. Belt clips seem a bit thin, and the slide-out battery cradles seem to me to be a broken plastic clip holding them in waiting to happen. What else... super easy to scan for open frequencies and lots of info on the screen. Headphone out on the RX pretty cool. All in all pretty good. I haven't done much in the way of really analyzing the sound quality of the wireless unit (not the included lav mic) yet, but it sounded very good on the shoot. Two things I wish they would have done differently... first, spent the extra money to up the output to 50 mA instead of the existing 30 mA. Would still have been legal and with much better range. How much could it have cost? And have the RX show how much battery charge is left on the TX like Lectros do. Oh, and get rid of that weird wiring that makes the Sony 1/8 locking lav connector incompatable with Senny 1/8 locking connectors, which are MUCH more standard.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Sound and True Diversity Bought these to pair with my Sony FS5 and it's a match made in heaven. The receiver has diversity antennae and I've no problem finding the transmitter. It also gives you a wide range of frequencies to use, but my favorite feature on this system is the pilot tone option that is a smart way to ensure minimal noise or interference. These are rock solid and I would highly recommend them.

    Rated 1 out of 5 by from STAY AWAY!!! The product stopped working after almost 3 months of use. Sony has terrible technical support. I am currently still waiting for a call back for them to help me with the issue. I have called 3 times total and they tell me that I need to wait to get a call back and that is my only option. It's been over a week and still no call back from technical support.....
