HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 overview

  • 1Description

The Thunderbolt Dock G2 from HP brings Thunderbolt 3, USB Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, DisplayPort, VGA, Gigabit Ethernet, and 3.5mm audio to HP and non-HP Thunderbolt and USB Type-C notebooks. It also supports USB Type-C notebook charging up to 100W and is compatible with systems running Windows 10 and 7, macOS, and Google Chrome.

HP's Thunderbolt Dock G2 is equipped with two USB Type-C ports, both of which support data and power up to 15W, and one of which also supports DisplayPort video output. There is also one Thunderbolt 3 port, which delivers bi-directional transfers speeds of up to 40 Gb/s and supports USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen 2) at up to 10 Gb/s and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2. Additional peripherals can be connected using the three USB 3.0 Type-A ports, one of which is powered, while additional video can be output using the two DisplayPort and one VGA port. The Thunderbolt 3, USB Type-C with DisplayPort, and two DisplayPort video outputs can support up to four simultaneous displays and resolutions up to 5120 x 2880 at 60 Hz. If you need to connect speakers, a mic, or a headset, there is a 3.5mm audio combo jack, and network connectivity is achieved using the Gigabit Ethernet port.

System power is provided using an included 120W AC adapter. Power Delivery 3.0 is also supported and outputs 5V/5A, 9V/5A, 12V/5A, 15V/5A, and 20V/5A to compatible devices. Protection is provided by a limited 1-year warranty.

    HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 reviews

Thunderbolt Dock G2 is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It does many things, but have run into two issues I love it. I can find no user documentation to work my way through two issues. The first is, so far I can't find a way to extend the desktop to the additional two monitors I have connected from my Z Book. That means I have three displays all showing the same thing. I've looked in all the usual places to make this change, so far to no avail. The second issue is, VPN doesn't work through it. I have to connect the internet to my laptop directly, IF I WANT TO USE VPN. Otherwise, the mechanicals and various ports are excellent. Just need to work through these two issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works It's been hard finding a dock to work with a Spectre x360. The good news is that this dock works. I have it driving a 4k monitor and an HD monitor via display port->HDMI. All is well, as is USB. The laptop charges well ... the computer doesn't complain. Note I had been driving this monitor off of USB-C->Display port and it would only run at 30Hz. With the dock it's operating at 60Hz. Pros: 1 docking solution Cons: It can be a bit finicky about WHAT port to plug a monitor into. Also be aware that you may have to change monitor MST settings for DisplayPort to get it to work correctly. My Dell monitor was also finnicky about WHICH port it wanted to be plugged into as the other one is apparently just for daisy chaining (which I haven't attempted yet). Note also, you will have to install Intel Thunderbolt utilities to get anything to work. I had actually done this previously when testing with a Dell TB3 dock (which only worked "ok"). Note I haven't tried wired networking or audio yet

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good dock, powers laptop. Works well and charges my Spectre laptop so this is the only thing I have to plug in. I did have to edit the settings in the Thunderbolt Software to make the USB ports work correctly, and I wish the installed Thunderbolt cord were longer. I replaced it with one that was 6 feet long so I could keep my laptop out of the way, but still connect to the dock.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dual Monitor Issues I have had ongoing trouble getting dual monitors to work consistently with DisplayPort to HDMI adapters. My monitors only have HDMI inputs. Sometimes both come up and other times only one of the two.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Features Bought this dock a few weeks ago. It is able to power my 13" laptop and add peripherals with no mess. However, unlike the dock for my business laptop, users cannot press the power button on the top of this dock to turn on the 13" laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly. I was scared of other reviews of this dock and other HP docks not working correctly. This one works perfectly with my zbook x2 and my wife's Spectre 13. It has a short thunderbolt cable attached to the front that provides charging and full connectivity to two 4k displays, Ethernet and a bunch of USB accessories. Recommended one cable docking solution.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good looking awful product Looks nice. Aside of that: 1. Monitor connected through DP periodically receives bogus signal which wakes it up and prevents from keeping the power save mode. 2. Cheap realtek Ethernet chip. come on ... 3. Extremely noisy irritating fan inside. No manual says that. stay away of this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't charge Zbook Have updated bios, installed thunderbolt software, but no luck
