BirdDog BDPTZKEY Reviews

Nice on paper and pictures

In principle it looks and sounds great on paper. Live situation is not good I am afraid. rotary dials are all over the place in terms of acceleration curves. No consistency. presets do not recall realiably. function key mapping gets lost after each power down. buttons are too hard to press for a full register and too side-wobbly. exposure control is basically broken, don't even try it. It feels like the Joystick changes it's sensitivity/acceleration every time you push it. Hard to get a good feel/establish muscle memory with this thing. I guess this controller would be fine as a dedicated HW controller for a single camera if you do not need switching but the lack of exposure control that works reliably, it's pointless. Especially at this price point. I would steer well clear and look at an alternative way to control the lovely BirdDog ptz cams.

Works great... but still feels a bit beta

This keyboard is promising, if a bit expensive. I've been able to get it to control the P100s without too much finessing, but it's been an adventure trying to dial everything in. Search and add for NDI devices works great. It's not intuitive but not too bad to figure out. I haven't tried it with rs232 or visca or any of the other protocols. The joystick feels good in the hand but we haven't had luck getting that buttery smooth reaction with the PTZs yet. The control is a bit delayed, but that may have more to do with our network not being configured correctly. But on that point, having network configuration recommendations would have been nice. The zoom is okay. Not fluid enough that I would trust it durring a live shot. The focus is super sensitive and I haven't found a way to dial it back. Same with the exposure settings, and pretty much any of the dials on the left side. They work... but not something to try to do live. Then there is comms... well at least a comms port on the back. Nothing about it in the manual. Still haven't been able to get it to show up in Comms Lite. Nothing on the web interface. Getting comms to work with it would be killer, but nothing yet. Hopefully it's just a future firmware update away or some setting I haven't found.

Why the Port Setting requirements, why?

Piece of Australian uselessness. Has never worked! Why the Port Settings requirements? Bad enough you need to hire a Networking Guru to use NDI, this is EVEN WORSE!

Bought for our church with 2 P200 PTZ cameras. Make sure you do firmware upgrade right away to avoid headaches. Used it couple times now and works great.

This unit is garbage, it may control BIRDDOG CAMERAS, IT WILL NOT CONTROL SONY, PANASONIC or AXIS cameras over IP. I have had 3 professional video vendors in the LA Metro play with this and everyone has reported it is garbage and no one was successful in getting it to work. There is little to no tech support from the other side of the lake. Save the headache and money and move on.

Nice physical hardware but...

We've used this for about 18 months. When the stars align and it will access all of your cameras the buttons and controller work great. We use both NDI and ViscaIP connections to birddog and newtek cameras and it's really hit or miss whether it will connect to them. Dealt with support, firmwares, etc. and the reliability isn't there. The other review about it being forever beta is spot on.

There is no specific Gain Control on this interface, however it does have 6 assignable Functions Buttons. More than likely you will be able to set one of those up for Gain.
