JBL JBL104SET Overview

  • 1Description

Designed for desktop applications, the JBL 1 Series 104 comprises a pair of monitors suitable for both consumer and critical referencing. These monitors employ a coaxial design to give you a smooth representation of the frequency spectrum, so that you have a more accurate picture of the sonic information coming your way. As such, these speakers are useful for home-recording studios, podcasters, video editors who pay attention to sound, and anyone looking for accurate, yet portable monitors.

A 4.5" low-frequency driver and a 0.75" high-frequency driver are situated in a coaxial design, while a 60W amplifier distributes 30W of Class-D power to each speaker. Set your monitoring level with the front-panel volume knob on the master speaker, and you'll find accurate sonic representation at any volume. The frequency response is 60 Hz to 20 kHz, but a low-frequency port ensures presence in the low registers to better judge bass content.

Inputs are made possible through balanced 1/4" jacks, a 3.5mm termination for auxiliary devices, or through unbalanced RCA connections. A front-panel headphone jack on the master speaker mutes the speakers and outputs signal directly to your favorite pair of cans. Included with the monitors are a 6.6' extension monitor speaker wire, a 3.5mm to RCA audio cable (perfect for stereo receivers, for example), and a power cable.

    JBL JBL104SET Reviews

1 Series 104 Compact Powered Desktop Reference Monitors is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great bang for your buck One of the best monitors Ive listened to in the $200 price range. Im using these for video editing and theyve been treating me well. Theyre a bit boomy in the low end and lack some of that crispness in the highs, and theyre plenty loud for a desktop setting. The provided cables are enough to get you started, but running them through an interface would give you a little more control and quality. The headphone override on the master speaker is a nice feature so youre not plugging reaching around your computer to plug them in (iMac users rejoice). These are a great and affordable way to step into the monitoring world.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the office I bought these a few weeks ago. I used RCA ports to connect a bluetooth receiver, so I can stream from my phone during office hours. They perform very well. Bi-amped speakers have all the power they need to produce low distortion sound at all volume levels. They play a across a very broad spectrum and all types of music sound great. These are ported, so the low end comes through even at low volume levels. I rated 4 instead of 5 as they lack ( just a little) punch at the low end. It is probably asking too much from such a small package. My preference is for the bass to be impactful even at low volume. Don't be confused by this though, they produce a very rich sound from a decent mp3 file. Great value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Probably best in price range B&H is the best.  I used to purchase from **********, but now I make all of my audio gear purchases from B&H. Ive been an audio engineer for 50 years.  Im partial to Tannoys for mixing and mastering.  I needed a small pair of monitors for listening to mixes at a remote location and chose the JBL 104 desktop reference monitors.  They sound good for their size.  Good frequency response and low distortion.  My complaints are:  If they sit with no signal for a while, they go into standby mode.  It takes a strong signal to get them to work again.  Not good.  With headphones plugged into the front phones jack, there is a low-level high frequency whine on the left channel - even with no input signal attached.  Its not the headphones - its the audio amp in the main speaker.  It sound like digital noise.  I tried different locations and different power outlets.  No change.  Ill probably keep them until I find something better in the same price range.

So I don't need an amp for this? I can just plug it straight into my computer? Why does only one speaker have audio jacks?

    Asked by: Haganation
