Atomos Shinobi Overview

  • 1Description

The Shinobi 5.2" 4K HDMI Monitor is a 5.2" on-camera monitor that monitors DCI 4K, UHD 4K, and HD video input. It features a 10-bit FRC IPS screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m², which makes it suitable for use in both exterior and interior conditions. The AtomHDR display technology allows you to accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor supports popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Shinobi features a lightweight plastic chassis and powers from a single L-series battery. Additional features include a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools, as well as anamorphic de-squeeze. A 12V power supply is included with the unit.

AtomHDR

With AtomHDR you can monitor up to ten stops of dynamic range of your camera's LOG image. Most conventional monitors can only display six or seven stops, which is fine for standard footage; but a Log image will look overly flat. It is also superior to monitoring with a loaded LUT, which can clip the highlights and mask shadows.

5.2" Daylight Viewable Screen

The Shinobi features a 5.2" IPS LCD screen that is illuminated by a bright 1000 cd/m² LED backlight, making it possible to view in daylight without requiring a hood. Plus, the screen is also color calibrated from the factory to ensure accurate image representation.

HDR Signal Management

Log and HDR signals can be difficult to monitor with conventional equipment. Though, with the Shinobi's built-in HDR signal management functions, the log signal can be converted to the PQ standard for compatibility with existing consumer and professional HDR equipment.

Anamorphic De-Squeeze

The Shinobi supports Anamorphic de-squeeze, allowing you to comfortably view anamorphic footage with a squeeze of 2x, 1.5x, 1.33, and Panasonic's 8:3.

    Atomos Shinobi Reviews

Shinobi 5.2" 4K HDMI Monitor is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from We have a winner I tried a half dozen models in the $200 to $400 range: Feelworld, Ikan, Neewer etc. The high brightest Feelworld model ate batteries at a crazy space. All of them had limited features and terrible menus, buttons and UI as well as cheap builds. Ikan had a decent build, okay menu but limited features, dim screen, mediocre battery. I returned or sold them all. Then I saw this. Ive rented Atmos Shoguns before but thought the price of this might mean compromises. It does not. Everything you love about Atmos - touchscreen UI, every feature you could possibly want - LUTS, HDR, 10-bit, high resolution, updated firmware, excellent battery life (3X the Feelworld high brightness using the exact same Sony batteries). I just did a shoot in the rain under umbrellas and although the build is not metal like my old Small HD, its both light and sturdy. Much better build and not worried about it in production shoot. You will have to spend a lot more to get anything better, in my literal view, its the best monitor in this price range, in fact probably under $750 thats currently out there. Highly recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor Focus Assist After comparing this to the SmallHD Focus 5” I already have, I am unfortunately returning this product. I mainly use a monitor for the Focus Assist feature. After adjusting all the settings possible for this feature, it is far behind the SmallHD for that purpose. I really wanted to like this monitor. It is also extremely light weight which can be a good thing, but it feels cheap because of this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Awesome This monitor is super crisp! User interface is very intuitive and functional. I love having false color for exposure. It is so easy to turn graphs, peaking, zebras and monitors on and off quickly.
