Zhiyun-Tech WEEBILL LAB Overview

  • 1Description

The Zhiyun-Tech WEEBILL LAB introduced a new design to motorized handheld gimbal stabilizers. Zhiyun has added support for a mini tripod in the upper section of the gimbal, allowing for two-handed operation as well as easily switching to underslung mode. At the same time, Zhiyun has shortened the main handle to make the gimbal more compact and lighter. The WEEBILL LAB supports up to 6.6 lb and offers pan follow, full follow, locking, POV, vortex, and PhoneGo modes with 360° pan, tilt, and roll rotation. PhoneGo mode enables the gimbal to operate at maximum follow speed for extreme sports and similar applications. The WEEBILL runs for up to 10 hours on two supplied 18650 batteries.

The WEEBILL LAB supports a single external servo motor for controlling focus or zoom using the onboard handwheel on the side. The TransMount Max Servo is recommended because it has the torque to handle zoom (which requires more power than focus adjustment) and can be used interchangeably between the focus and zoom rings.

Via a Wi-Fi connection to an iOS/Android phone or tablet, the WEEBILL LAB is capable of wirelessly transmitting your video recordings to your mobile device in real time in 720p resolution. This feature is compatible with select cameras such as the Sony a7S and Panasonic GH5. Please see Zhiyun-Tech's website for a full camera compatibility list.

The gimbal includes an iOS/Android ZY PLAY app (free download) which provides features such as panorama, focus time-lapse, motion time-lapse, long exposure time-lapse, camera settings, and more. The WEEBILL also has an OLED display and onboard controls including a joystick and shutter release button.

Another major feature of the gimbal is an axis latch lock system consisting of a separate latch lock on each axis. This feature allows you to lock the individual axes to remember your balance positions when powering the gimbal off. This way you won't have to rebalance each time.

Along with the WEEBILL, Zhiyun has released an entire ecosystem of optional, dedicated TransMount accessories to allow for more enhanced use of the gimbal. These include a phone holder for monitoring, servo motor, camera belt, and specialized monopods that work together with the belt and gimbal to allow for stable jib-style shots. Another useful accessory is the TransMount Quick Setup Adapter which allows you to attach the included mini tripod by quick release functionality. The mini tripod can also be attached the standard way on the bottom of the gimbal, to function as a stand or extension. If you incorporate two Quick Setup Adapters, you'll be able to quickly move the mini tripod between the two locations. You can also add a second mini tripod and have one in both positions.

Note: The WEEBILL LAB doesn't support many 3rd-party 18650 batteries because it requires the slightly shorter kind made by Zhiyun-Tech, so only Zhiyun-Tech 18650 batteries are recommended.

Crafted Latch Design
The WEEBILL LAB is designed with a red latch next to each axis for saving the balance positions when powering the gimbal off for storage or battery swaps. When powered back on, the gimbal returns to its balance positions. This way you won't have to rebalance it every time you power it on.
Wireless Image Transmission
Via a Wi-Fi connection to an iOS/Android phone or tablet, the WEEBILL LAB is capable of wirelessly transmitting your video recording to your phone as a 720p image in real time.
Dual QR Plates and Enhanced Balancing System
The WEEBILL LAB camera balancing system features the above-mentioned latch design plus dual quick release plates (Arca-Swiss/Manfrotto). This combination allows balancing the camera and getting the gimbal ready for operation faster and easier. The dual quick release plates consist of a Manfrotto baseplate and Arca-Swiss camera plate. With the camera plate attached to your camera you can transition between equipment and not have to rebalance the gimbal when attaching the camera back on the gimbal.
PhoneGo Mode
In addition to the standard operational modes, the WEEBILL LAB also features PhoneGo Mode, which lets the gimbal operate at maximum follow speed for extreme sports and similar applications.
The included ZY PLAY iOS/Android app offers features such as panorama, focus time-lapse, motion time-lapse, long exposure time-lapse, and more.
ViaTouch Control System
The WEEBILL LAB's ViaTouch Control System consists of a variety of controls that come up on the ZY PLAY app and allow for framing shots, controlling certain gimbal movements, and adjusting camera settings.
Wireless Password
The default Wi-Fi password for the WEEBILL LAB is "12345678".

    Zhiyun-Tech WEEBILL LAB Reviews

WEEBILL LAB Handheld Stabilizer for Mirrorless Cameras is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Despite shortcomings it has potential. I’m now on my second Weebill Lab as the first one wouldn’t connect to WiFi after the firmware update. The second one also won’t connect to my iPhone X after the firmware update with my Sony a6500 or A7iii. If you don’t need to use image transmission, the gimbal functions very well. I wish the Weebill Lab had more custom adjustment settings and a way to lock Follow Mode via hardware or a way to remap and customize the buttons. Battery life is good. Zhiyun support is very bad so don’t expect to solve any issue you may have through them. This gimbal has so much potential but the app still has bugs and is very clunky. Hope they take this product seriously and fix the shortcomings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Gimbal Pros: It is small and light!  It works great with sony a6500, Zeiss 16-70 f4 lens, and Rode VideoMic Pro.  It is very easy to balance compared to other gimbals which dont have individual axes locks.  Battery life seems to be as advertised using the setup noted.  After about five hours of continuous use, battery was at 50% level.  It folds and locks nicely for transport while remaining balanced if completed prior to folding. Cons: It says the batteries are 18650s, but standard 18650s from my other gimbals and flash lights dont seem to fit the gimbal nor the included charger.  Guess the batteries are proprietary to Zhiyun.  The Zhiyun batteries are a few mm shorter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gimbal all of a sudden stopped working Just as the other review mentioned it all of a sudden stopped working. I bought a Weebill Lab and its fully updated with the new firmware. The LCD screen turns on but doesnt stabilize the camera. After a few seconds an X appears and nothing works. Also as the other review mentioned contacted zhiyun and they are silent. I would highly advise not getting this product at all costs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got a Sony A7III then this is your gimbal!! Put a 16-24 lens on it, stick a mic in the hot shoe, connect the included cable (right angle side goes into the weebill lab), balance it,  and you will be able to use the wireless transmission feature out of the box to control the camera from a smart phone. once you got bluetooth, location and wifi on, the app will change the wifi connection to connect to the weebill, so if you need your phone for email, etc, you should use the old phone from your last upgrade for this task. Its best to turn off IBIS (stablization) as it seems to add a lot of micro shakes to to the recorded video.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a Bad Gimbal This gimbal is pretty good. Right out of the box you get some cables, batteries, a foam case, and some other accessories. Build quality does feel a little cheap due to it being made out of plastic in some parts, but other parts are metal. The plastic does help keep the weight down, because overall this is a very light weight and portable gimbal. I dont think its worth $600 because there are some really good options out there for a fraction of that price, but if you need something light weight and portable this gets the job done. It has some nice modes and it does a pretty good job at stabilizing my Lumix G9.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gimbal stopped working!!! I bought a Weebill Lab US Updated Version 2 weeks ago , it worked fine for a few days and now it displays an X a few seconds after it starts and I cant get rid of it.  In the 10s before it tries to update itself, you can quickly scroll through the menu, and in the about section, it shows that the firmware is 1.00 for a Crane 2.  Tried contacting Zhiyun, but no response.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best gimbal for Panasonic GH5 and LX10 I love this gimbal because of its small size, light weight, motor locks and underslung mode. This is the only gimbal that will work well with both the Panasonic GH5 and LX10. I sometimes need the LX10 on a gimbal when both other cameras are on tripod. Im so happy to able to do this now! I sold my Beholder DS-1 to get this one and so far I like it MUCH better. I use my 12-35 with the GH5 most of the time and it works very well as it also does with the LX10. I recommend getting two sets of quick connect fittings and extra batteries. My only complaint is you have to hold down the button for full follow mode. But overall this is a great gimbal! Im including a setting photo for each camera to make it easier to set up if you have a GH5 or LX10.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Has almost everything I want Pros: Lightweight/portable Locking mechanism for axis Can support my Sony A7RIII Handle can switch to get low shots Can control my camera settings from the gimbal Easy to balance gimbal Quick release plate makes it so I dont have to rebalance gimbal everytime Cons: When plugged into the Sony, several features are disabled (steadyshot, facial recognition) Doesnt quite give me 10hrs of battery life With longer lenses I see some sway if I move too quickly (Tamron 28-75 f/2.8) Zhiyun has HORRIBLE customer service Larger setups may not let you drop down to low shots mode Ive been searching for a gimbal that has everything I want but havent found one yet. The weebill lab is the closest Ive found. I travel a lot so the fact that it fits easily on the side of my backpack and doesnt take too much space is awesome. Easy to balance and with the quick release plate I dont have to rebalance the gimbal everytime I remove the camera. I control the ISO, aperture, and shutterspeed from the camera. I can also focus and record video. The negative to this is that features on my Sony A7RIII get disabled like steadyshot which is a big deal. The footage becomes shaky without it on. I dont end up using the gimbal to control my camera because of this. If you have long days of work I would pickup an extra set of batteries. Longer lenses push the weebill lab to its limits for balancing and makes it difficult to drop down into briefcase mode (camera back is too close to gimbal and hits); however, you can still keep it upright and shoot footage. Lastly, Zhiyun is terrible at responding to their customers. Ive had very bad experiences with trying to contact them. The gimbal has a warranty but because youre freaking with them youd be lucky to get any help trying to fix/replace it. And if you do itll take a very long time to get it all sorted out.

Does The Zhiyun Weebill Lab Work Sony A7iii With 18-105MM ?
    Asked by: JOHNIE
Yes, the Weebill Lap should be able to handle the A7III very well. If you are using the 18-105mm lens it should balance as well, just keep in mind that Sony's E-Mount 18-105mm is for APS-C cameras, you will need to use the A7III in a Crop Mode to use that lens.

    Asked by: Filipe
It should work, the M50 is a small camera and the Weebill was made just for devices that size. It will be a great addition to the M50.

Yes, you can connect an external monitor via the bottom tripod thread or using a clamp, a shoe or ball-head mount, or a clamp with an articulating arm on the handle.

I'm just curious....this is described as being for a "mirrorless" camera weiging up to 6.6 pounds. I have a Sony a77ii dslr that weighs less... Can a DSLR NOT be used? Again, just curious..
    Asked by: Tony
This gimbal is geared more towards Mirrorless Cameras, however smaller DSLRs with lighter lenses can be used on it as well. Just as long as you keep the load under its 6.6 pound capacity you should be able to get an A77II to balance on it.

Why can't the Weebill accomodate an a6500 with external monitor?
    Asked by: Jeffrey
I asked Zhiyun service before and they answered it is due to the gimbal control system that Sony cameras cannot support gimbal and external monitor at the meantime. But they said there is one of new control cable will release can support this in the future.

The Weebill Lab has a 6.6 lb load capacity and is designed to handle Mirrorless cameras. The combination of A7III and 24-105mm lens should work very well on this gimbal.
