Leica Q2 Overview

By B&H Photo's
Leica Q2: Limitless Potential
Redeveloped while retaining impressive imaging and optical attributes, the Leica Q2 is an advanced compact camera characterized by its updated sensor design and intuitive operation. Revolving around a revised full-frame 47.3MP CMOS sensor and Maestro II image processor, high-resolution stills shooting is possible as well as both DCI and UHD 4K video recording. The image processor also contributes to a broad ISO 50-50000 sensitivity range plus quick 10-fps full-resolution continuous shooting. The added resolution also affords a series of unique Crop Modes, which simulate working with longer focal length lenses, including 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm fields of view.

Complementing the imaging and optical assets, the Q2 remains an especially compact and intuitive camera, well-suited for street and travel photography. Its sleek magnesium alloy body is weather sealed for working in trying environments and it has adopted the same battery featured in the flagship SL mirrorless camera for longer battery life. A high-resolution 3.68MP OLED electronic viewfinder is featured for fluid and clear eye-level monitoring and a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD also affords straightforward playback and settings control. Built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi permit wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device via the Leica FOTOS app.
47.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Processor
Featuring a redeveloped imaging system, the Q2 incorporates a high-resolution 47.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor as well as an updated Maestro II image processor, which lends more flexible image creation, offers smooth color and tonal rendering, a broad 13-stop dynamic range, low noise, and a wide sensitivity range from ISO 50-50000. Processing capabilities also afford fast shooting performance, up to 10 fps at full-resolution with a mechanical shutter, plus an especially quick 49-area autofocus system. Stills can be recorded as 14-bit DNG files and JPEGs. The added resolution also enables unique digital zoom capabilities to simulate working with different focal length lenses: 30MP images can be created using a 35mm field of view, 15MP images with a 50mm field of view, and 7MP with a 75mm field of view.

In addition to stills, the Q2 features improved video recording with the ability to shoot both DCI 4K24p and UHD 4K30p video, with high-speed Full HD recording at up to 120p.
Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
Key to the popularity of the Q-series is the incorporation of a fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 wide-angle prime lens. Blending Leica's optical know-how with a design perfectly matched to the image sensor, this lens incorporates three aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations for sharp and accurate rendering. Its fast f/1.7 maximum aperture also excels in low-light conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Extending its versatility, a dedicated macro focusing position can also be used for working with subjects as close as 6.7" away. Additionally, optical image stabilization helps to compensate for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.
Body Design
  • The high-resolution 3.68MP (1280 x 960) OLED electronic viewfinder provides a clear and realistic means for eye-level viewing. Its high refresh rate virtually eliminates lag, and an updated eye sensor provides faster automatic switching between the EVF and the rear LCD.
  • The rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a touchscreen design for intuitive navigation and playback, as well as the ability to touch to focus.
  • The lightweight magnesium alloy body is sealed to protect against dust and moisture (IP52-rated) for use in harsh environmental conditions.
  • Adoption of the BP-SCL4 battery, as used with the SL (Typ 601) mirrorless camera, affords an improved 370 shots per charge and the battery's physical design incorporates a rubber gasket to further reinforce the overall weather sealing.
  • Enhanced haptics, following suit of the M10 and CL-series cameras, emphasize a simpler interface, including a single-stage On/Off button, a three-button rear control set, a programmable button within the thumb-wheel dial, a push-button diopter adjustment, and a distinctive thumb grip.
  • The mechanical shutter affords flash sync speeds up to 1/500 sec.
  • The lens features a 49mm filter thread diameter for attaching optional filters.
  • Accepts one SD-type memory card and supports the UHS II protocol.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi, when used in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app for iOS and Android, permits sharing imagery directly to a linked mobile device and also enables remote control over the Q2 and remote shooting via a live view image. Additionally, Bluetooth LE helps to maintain a permanent connection between the mobile device and the camera, enabling remote waking of the camera and automatic connection anytime within range.

Leica Q2 Reviews

Going back to Nikon.

I have wanted a Leica camera for many years and was finally able to afford one. I really wanted an M11 but decided this would be my first Leica. Let me just say I’m completely disappointed. For some reason I just can’t take good pictures with this camera. For years I was shooting on a cheap DX format and Nikon and never had problems. I could see a shot in my head and the Nikon just gave me results. But the Q2 just doesn’t seem to do what I want it to. I primarily take pictures when I’m in a hike and I really liked the size and weight of this camera. I don’t like to carry a lot of gear so this seemed like my perfect camera. But it’s just not a good camera for landscape photography. At least for me it’s not. The white balance is off, the autofocus never locks in on what I want it to, and the contrast is seriously lacking. In my opinion this camera is not worth the time and money. I’m going back to my cheap Nikon. It just takes better pictures.

One of the best cameras from Leica

Leica Q2 is one of the best compact cameras from Leica. The lens is very sharp and fast. Colours are really natural and reach.Autofocus is fast and accurate.I use Leica Q2 for landscape photos and very happy with results. You do not need a tripod to get sharp images without blur.Best results you can get by using Adobe Lightroom. It is easy to convert Leica Q2 DNG files to JEPG and get beautiful colours and Leica look.I would recommend Leica Q2 to all Leica lovers and photo enthusiasts.

An excellent compromise

4.5 stars The Q2 is an excellent compromise of size, weight, price, and features. Not pocketable, but small enough and light enough to grab and go. Feels solid and heavy, but 100g lighter than a Nikon Z6II/Z7II with the Z 40mm lens. Expensive, but it's like having a Z7II with a non-zoom Z24-70 2.8. The Q2 lens is sharp and fast, colors are appealing, and the 47MP sensor allows for cropping. Very sharp images from 28-50 cropped. The Q2 is disguised as a very simple camera. There are advanced features in the menu, but the UI is designed to get out of the way. The tactile aperture ring, focus ring, and shutter speed dial are easy to use, and see. The AF speed is similar to a Nikon Z6II/Z7II. No flip down LCD screen to use or worry about, but the electronic viewfinder is easy on the eyes. The overall experience feels great and not so modern. The Q2 is an excellent compromise that encourages you to bring it with, interact with, and just shoot.

One camera to rule them all

There are a few things I would not do with this camera. Wild life photography or stealth street portraits (where a longer focal length is needed. Almost anything else this camera is great for. The dynamic range and clarity are superb. Portraits where you want some context, landscape and street are all great uses. Elegant, well constructed and easy to learn. The resulting photos speak for themselves.

Fantastic images

I was really on the fence about this camera because of the price. The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 was due to the price. IT is super well built and the images are fantastic. Super sharp images corner to corner even wide open. In my experience so far optimal image sharpness about f4 and 5.6. There has been a lot of talk about noisy images at higher iso s.. Even at 3200. Even though there is some noise-- it is easily removed with some of the newer software without compromising on image detail (e.g Topaz DeNoise AI). I shoot in raw but in the beginning testing I shoot in both raw and jpg and the processed images are generally really good in terms of color. The menu is generally intuitive but I did have to look on line to figure out a few of the features. Great camera but at a price. Battery life is also really good and the extra battery in the kit is a plus. At first I was not sure if I liked the leather wrap but it does come in handy when I want to place the camera in a suitcase. It does add some protection. The leather strap is not to my liking -- thin and pulls on your neck-- thus I use a small inexpensive cushioned smaller 3rd party neck strap.

This is a very convenient camer to carry around. It's light and unobtrusive, quiet and quick to make exposure adjustments. Some of the criticisms I saw on YouTube reviews must have been on earlier versions with early firmware. The current V4 had none of the shortcomings like mismatched color in the EVF and screen. It's a joy to shoot with.

Because I am no longer able physically to handle a DSLR, the Q2 is ideal for me. Learning more a bout the camera every outing, but I have already shot some great landscapes, macros and events.

Except it came with a small scratch on the lens, I have no complaints about this beautiful camera. The design is so good to make it almost like an art. The battery can't last very long compared to other full-frame like Canon 5D serials

Do you like this camera for Macro photography? Or would it be better to just add a macro prime Canon to my 5D Mark 4 body ??
Asked by: Patricia
The Q2 system provides users with excellent macro capabilities. That being said, the limitation of the Q2 is its fixed lens. If you want the most versatility, having an interchangeable lens camera will allow you more options for macro photography. The beauty of the Q2 is you have an amazing compact camera for day to day shooting and a macro feature that's always available when you need it built in.

In the Q2 Video Full HD 120fps, does that include autofocus? Does the shutter button have to remain half pressed to maintain autofocus in video mode
Asked by: Troy
You do not have to hold the shutter release halfway down for continuous AF in the video mode. You simply have to have the Focus Mode (found in the main menu) set to AFc (auto focus continuous) and the camera will focus automatically as you move the camera or if the subject is moving. If you shoot in AFs mode, you would have to push the shutter release down halfway for it to lock onto the subject. If the scene changes you would have to push the shutter release down again to re-focus.
