AJA OG-3GDA Reviews

A pretty good DA, but a quirky and unlabeled rear module

I bought a number of these OpenGear DA cards to clean up distribution at my television station, and they do what you would expect from a reclocking distribution amp. My initial installation did not go smoothly: while most dual DA cards arrange the connections in columns where you have an input at the top and its outputs directly below (Cobalt Digital 9004, Ross Video DEA-8805, for instance), the AJA 2x4 card maps the two groups of outputs one above the other. So instead of input A (jack 1) feeding jacks 3, 5, 7, and 9, it feeds 3, 4, 5, and 6. Input B (jack 2) feeds jacks 7, 8, 9, and 10. This is really unintuitive, and I ended up having to rewire an entire frame. Instead of labeling the jacks on the rear module, AJA silkscreens the jack assignments onto the card where you can't read it once it's in the frame. (AJA is not alone in this: Blackmagic does the same.) A slide switch lets you set the card to either 2x4 or 1x8 mode, and it's easy to use. Unlike some more expensive cards, you cannot change the mode through DashBoard (though you can see how the switch is set). The bottom line is that this is a fairly cost effective card that does its job well once you have it wired. The odd rear module layout makes these cards inconsistent with the rest of our facility, so in an installation with pre-existing DA cards, I would probably opt for cards with the same connector pattern.

Is this card compatible with backplane that was included with the BlackMagic Design OpenGear SDI distribution card?

AJA recommends using the AJA OG-3GDA-1x9 3G-SDI Reclocking Distribution Amplifier Card with openGear frames such as the AJA openGear Rackmount Frame for 20 openGear Cards (2 RU), BH #AJOGXFR.

Does this card come with a rear backplane module? If so, what is the model # and specs?
Asked by: David
The AJA website states that the DA card INCLUDES a 10x BNC rear openGear connector module. So which is it, is the rear backplane module included or not?? If not, please indicate the model number of the rear module.
