Sachtler Ace M Tripod System Overview

The Ace M System Black Edition from Sachtler combines the Ace M fluid head with 75mm bowl, a two-stage aluminum tripod, and a mid-level spreader. Designed for digital cine-style cameras, the Ace M Black Edition supports rigs weighing up to 8.8 pounds. The Ace M fluid head features five steps of counterbalance and three steps of pan and tilt drag adjustment, plus a zero drag option for pan and tilt. Cameras are mounted using the slide-in balancing plate. With a sliding range of 4.1", this head can adapt to a variety of rig configurations. Additional features include a detachable right-side pan bar and a bubble level. With an integrated flat head base, the Ace M can be used when shooting with a slider.

Sachtler Ace M Tripod System Reviews

Great Tripod For $500

By Joshua
Rated 4 out of 5

First of all, I want to say that this is a tremendous tripod for $500. I got it on a double-sale (it was on sale for $650 and then a one-day sale for $500). At its retail price of $850, I wouldn't buy it. Let's talk about a few of the downsides... It can only have one pan handle (it doesn't extend) and it can only attach to the right side of the head. There are no attachment points. The pan/tilt locks are oddly-placed and seem to operate backwards to what seems normal. There is no illuminated bubble level. The mid-spreader is rather flimsy and clunky. Lastly, if you want to hang something from the tripod, you have to supply your own hook. It only has a very small eyelet. You'd need an s-hook, or something, to hang a backpack or something. Now, let's talk about the good things... It has a good weight (an extra pound wouldn't hurt). The combination of capacity and counter-balance settings is some of the best around (especially at this price-point). The head is very smooth to move. Keep in mind that this is for camcorders and smaller cameras (it is an 8-pound capacity). I've had this tripod for around 4 months and I regularly use a Manfrotto 502 (less expensive), Manfrotto 504x (similar price), Libec RHP75 (much more expensive), and Vinten Vision 100 (way more expensive). I've always found the Manfrotto 502 to be the best budget tripod system ($500). It has a pretty good drag system. The counter-balance is fixed, but you can compensate for that by sliding the plate forward/backward. It's not as good as actually being in balance, though. I'd really like to try out a Benro BV4. It has all the features, that I want, in a $500 price point. It's Chinese and plastic, so the durability and quality control are questionable, but it would be worth checking out. I really don't care for the Manfrotto 504x. I've never gotten the counter-balance setting to work for the camera that's on it. The illuminated bubble level is pretty worthless. Even tight, the ball mount slips when slinging it over my shoulder (and even sometimes during use). The Libec's illuminated bubble level is quite good, and it's very smooth, but it isn't even an apples-to-apples comparison as the price is so much more. The Vinten combo is almost other-worldly, at around $10000. It isn't even worth consideration, for the mere mortal. So, the big question comes down to whether I would buy this a second time. If it was $500, maybe... I would take this over the Manfrotto 502, any day. For around $500, though, I might be too temped to try out the Benro BV4. For $650-$850, I wouldn't even consider buying this. If I was going to spend that much, I think I would rather find a discontinued Ace L (not the XL, for $1200). Really, the next appreciable step up is going to double or triple the cost. This would be a 5-star review if it had an illuminated bubble level, even 1 attachment point, the potential of adding a second pan bar, and a useful bag hook. Honestly, if it just added the bubble light, it would probably warrant 5 stars. Really, for the price I paid, it should probably be 5 stars. I just can't shake those few qualms. This would not be a 4-star review, for the retail price, though. Being able to buy an Ace L, for similar price, just makes too much sense. JJ

Leg fall apart

On 4th use, one of the lower leg sections fell out completely. There appears to be no way to repair it. Mechanism appears to be shot and something is rattling around inside the upper part of the leg. Wish I'd bought a more pro level tripod.

Not everybody can afford the Flowtech tripod, so the Sachler Ace is a great starter for professional needs on a budget. The head is perfectly fluid to let you make the perfect camera movement you were looking for. Very happy with it.

Excellent Fluid Head. Good tripod.

This is my first big boy tripod mainly for video. The fluid head is the star of the package. Using with a Canon R5c, Ninja V+, and a 70-200 EF lens with converter. Zero issues with weight. My previous attempts with video pans on a Manfrotto tripod always ended up looking jerky or unsmooth. This Sachtler Ace M has many settings for drag, weight balancing, and smoothness. It gave professional video pans on my first outing with less effort. I am sure this will outlast several generations as I upgrades cameras.

Absolutely amazing!

The best tripod I've ever owned. I wish I had the money for the Carbon Fiber version.

If you see this on sale, buy it.

Even if its not on sale, it is worth the price. Does it compete with my 100mm Vinten? No. Would it be great to bring to 90% of the jobs when I dont need a heavy drag 100mm head? YES. I would bring this on any job, run and gun, comes with a sachel and light and pro looking.

Smooth as butter

Can I mount a Sony A7iii on the back of the plate without it interfering with my lens operation or mount it near the front of plate without plate protruding too far off back of camera to get face close enough to viewfinder after quick release?

The A7iii should fit fine on the Sachtler Ace M System Black Edition with Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader (75mm Bowl) if screwed into the back of the plate not the forward.
