Im on a budget for a independent documentary and this little guy has helped me get my displays as accurate as possible for the money we got! I use this with my 2017 MacBook Pro 15 and a Dell U2720....Big fan. This unit outputs 1080 so be prepared to make some adjustments to your editing platform

much better than USB options

if you have trouble with USB video freezing or locking up, its because video burns up a lot of bandwidth on USB. Moving video to TB3 has eliminated freezes from my cameras. Have many other BlackMagic products as well. Tank-built tough, solid as bedrock.

I used 2 of the prev version of the exact same box with Thunderbolt 2 connectors for 6+ years to bring in 2 Canon cams with HDMI outs to my previous MacBook Pro (for use with recording and live-streaming with Wirecast and others). I just got a brand new M1 MacPro with Thunderbolt 4 (usb-C) connectors so needed 2 of these to make the same connections as the BlackMagic drivers that work with Apple Silicon didn't support the older boxes I had. It was seamless - and the BlackMagic driver package for Apple Silicon macs worked as expected. No problems, and got right up and running on my new Mac. A little pricey for just being a converter box but it just works which is comforting in a production environment.

Major issues for my workflow...

If you use Premiere, and edit in 4K there is a major downside with this box. You can set Premiere to scale down the resolution to the highest resolution the Monitor 3G can support (which is the only option). This is 2K 2048x1080, which is a different aspect ratio than 3840x2160. So for me, this squashes the image vertically and shows letterboxing on my broadcast monitor. The BMD video control panel cannot change the 2K output to 1080p either. After spending days with BMD support, Flanders support, and forums the only work-around is to edit in 1920x1080 not 4K, and then copy everything into a 4K sequence before exporting. As many of you know, this isn't always smooth and is a hassle at best.

Many people mistakenly use a USB-C cable instead of a Thunderbolt 3 cable. They look the same and fit in the same USB-C port connection. Make sure you are using the right cable.

Asked by: L A
The ATEM software control has no video display capability. This is a capture device. You could connect the output of the ATEM Mini to this and use software like Media Express to view the Mini in the computer. You could also connect the Mini as a webcam in your computer.
