SanDisk Extreme Pro External SSD Reviews

thank god I shot on film

Just got this drive a couple weeks ago to use as the main drive for storing / editing everything related to my thesis film. Formatted the drive, put a couple audio files on it, and sent it to Kodak Film Lab NY. Fast forward to today, I get my negatives back and the prores 4444 file of my 16mm scans. Watched it over once from the drive, put it into adobe premiere pro 2022, put on an adjustment layer with a basic curve to add some contrast so I wouldn't just be watching a flat scan. Closed all the programs and ejected the drive, yes I ejected it. Flash forward a couple hours, I'm all giddy about getting to see my thesis film scans that I spent all spring break filming, but it's not there. The file was gone, I didn't delete it, I didn't rip the drive out my computer, it just disappeared. I ejected it, plugged it in again, tried other computers, still gone. I downloaded a utility to recover files and it found it, but I still had no way to access or recover it. Luckily, Kodak Film Lab NY had a copy and the lab manager (big shoutout to Tony Landano) told me he could upload it to google drive and not to worry. If it weren't for him and the lab, and the fact that I have a physical celluloid copy of my film, I'd be totally screwed. Do yourself a favor and do not buy this SSD.

Warning Something's changed!!!

This is my 6th SanDisk SSD. The second 2 TB Pro. I've had zero problems with previous drives. This latest drive erased itself on day 5 of use. Researched and found that many users on Reddit are experiencing the same with this latest release of drives. I don't typically write reviews but felt I needed to warn others. Make sure you have a backup. I'll update if I get more information.

Failed!

Like so many of the other reviewers I recently purchased two of these only to have both fail. The disk won't mount and the only way to fix it is to reformat... losing everything on it. Luckily I triple-backed up and the older version of this drive still works like a champ. Do not buy these as something happened with SanDisk's latest batch.

Failed

The first drive failed after finished MOVING photos in lightroom from current folder to this new drive. I purchased another and moved using the finder in my mac. It failed again. The worst part is that the drive I purchased were on sale. Why would they put something on sale if you have bad batch of it? That is why they deserve only one star.

Stop Working in less than two months.

The drive malfunctioned just before completing two months of use, resulting in the loss of all data I had stored on it. Fortunately, a few items had already been backed up elsewhere. Nevertheless, I am highly disappointed with the product, and now I must rely on Sandisk's support, which appears to be provided by Western Digital. This is a regrettable situation.

Great external storage deice

Great external mass storage device. While this Device is limited by USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 maximum transfer rates, Blackmagicdesign Speed Test demonstrates that it delivers 835 MB/s which is more than adequate for editing 4K video at 60fps. As I am actually interested in 1080p post-production, this very compact and apparently quite rugged mass storage device exceeds my needs. The device does get moderately warm when connected regardless of use. Surface temperature appears to be in the vicinity of 46ºC. However, this temperature is not normally dangerous. In terms of normal operation, the enclosure appears to be designed to dissipate heat in any normal human habitation.

Do not purchase this drive

Unreliable. Should have read the reviews before purchasing. Failed after a couple of months and B&H will not let me return because it is over 30 days from purchase.

does the pro run cooler, and will the pro run faster than the extreme on the 2017 iMac Pro with only 10gb port?
Asked by: Ronald
The Sandisk Exteme PRO SSD is designed to run at faster sustained speeds and be able to handle many more read/writes, not necessarily cooler. You will get the full speed of this drive when you connect it to your Thunderbolt 3 port on your 2017 iMac Pro.

Yes, Thunderbolt3 is backwards compatible with USB-C speeds and will be able to connect in the TB3 port. You should get USB 3.2 transfer speeds.

I came to read more answers on this product as I work in post production. I'm not meaning to be unprofessional commenting with a complaint, but simply wanting to voice that I am tired of manufacturers cheapening their reputation in my eyes (anyone else?) by touting speeds that certainly make others like me want to click "buy" only to find it's not capable of achieving what it is marketed to do because, maybe, three computers out there are compatible/make the manufacturers' claimed speeds attainable. Not even the new Mac Studio has the capability!

It would be needed to be formatted to the proper setting. Also would require a usb -c connection as the adapters would not give enough power.

Is this correct - basically 2000 vs 200 read speeds? I'm comparing drives to edit 4k video. "Up to 2000 MB/s Read & Write Speeds"? I'm considering the SanDisk Professional 4TB G-DRIVE PRO External HDD (Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.2 Gen1, Space Gray) that says "Read Speeds up to 200 MB/s".
Asked by: Yee-Ping
For this Sandisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2, the read speeds are indeed up to 2000 MB/s. Although that is a maximum speed for sequential data, the read speeds are always going to be much faster than a hard disk drive.
