Canon EL-1 Overview

Power, connectivity, and reliability, the Canon Speedlite EL-1 is an on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II-compatible flash characterized by its flexibility to suit a variety of lighting needs. Featuring a xenon flashtube, greater exposure stability is possible along with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and versatile exposure control from full 1/1 power down to 1/8192 power. Also distinct, the EL-1 utilizes the LP-EL rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack to promote shorter recycle times of around 0.9 sec, approximately 335 flashes per charge, and it contributes to improved thermal management and the flash's active cooling system.

The EL-1 fully supports EL-series RT flashes via its built in radio trigger and receiver. It can trigger up to 15 RT-series receiver Speedlites to produce light freely even when not attached to the camera. For even more creative possibilities, the EL-1 features Second-Curtain Sync. The flash has a rugged physical design equivalent to the dust and water-resistance of the EOS-1D-series camera bodies. Its improved user interface incorporates an updated joystick design, display, and control layout and it features a tunable LED modeling lamp to help previsualize the lighting. Additionally, the flash head can fully swivel 180° left and right, bounce upward 120°, and it includes a built-in wide panel.

Pricey but you get what you pay for Awesome light!

Close your eyes, hit 'buy now'

If you want something that won't let you down, won't overheat, and will 'just work' don't look back and buy the thing. Yes, 1000 bucks is an insane amount of money to pay for a speed lite, but after having my Godox v860iic missing shot after shot and ultimately bricking itself on its second outing, in the middle of an event (with no recourse or warranty support...yes, those people are thieves and it's highway robbery), buying the Canon beast was a no brainer.

Amazing Performance, but Extra Batteries Necessary

I just got this incredible flash! I absolutely LOVE it! Fires really quickly & pretty much never blanks, until the battery is low. Only has about a 2 hour battery life & then is completely out. I just ordered two more batteries..... Overall would recommend it, just buy extra batteries.

No more AA thats great, but what is amazing about this flash is that is always ready, don't need to pause between shots to let the flash recharge...keep on shooting the EL-1 can keep it up! That's awesome. The material feels strong and look professional. Love it!

Awesome Upgrade!

Recently purchased the EL-1 as and upgrade to my 580 EX II. The 200 dollar rebate was a great incentive as I've been researching the EL-1 since it was announced. Sure glad I pulled the trigger on this flash for my R5. Of course, in time I plan to go all radio triggering, but for now the EL-1 is backwards compatible with optical triggering with my 5 and 4 series EX flash units so that's a plus and a nice feature! Great upgrade Canon!

Looks awesome

I love it and what it looks like it will do....but, because of how quickly you are asking for a review, have to admit I haven't had a chance to use it yet! It is much bigger than my last one and am excited to read about it as it also looks like I actually need to read the handbook before doing much more. Maybe after the holiday rush!!

Big upgrade

Big step forward over my 580 MkII. It is quite a bit larger so that takes a bit of getting used to, but the performance makes up for the size

EL-1 Major improvement on prior camera mount flashes

For the last 10 years I have been using the Canon 600 EX-RT flash on my Canon 5D series (I, II, III and IV) and then on my r5. I used rechargeable Enloop 2500MA NiMH batteries. However, the recycle times (depending on flash output) could take between 1 and 4 seconds. The Li-ion battery pack works remarkably well, whereby recycle times are a fraction of a second on continuous shooting . The UI menus are easy to use and input is fast and easy. Some photographers complain of sticker shock at the price. However, the list price also includes a battery charger, and a Li-ion battery. The combined cost of these two items is about $180 by themselves. I purchased my EL-1 during B&H Black Friday price of a $200 discount. The charger is compatible with the Canon batteries used by the D series and r series cameras and having a 2nd charger is convenient when you want to charge more than one battery at a time. The EL-1 battery is not compatible with the Canon camera bodies, due to it's extended length however the battery charger is the same (fortunately). The LED modeling light is great and it also serves as an excellent light for macro or close up work where a continuous light may be more desirable. The EL-1 is a major quantum leap in camera mounted flash tech.

I can't figure out how to get the IR beam activate with any flash I currently own with the Canon R5. Is it neccisary to use this flash in order to get the beam in a dark room?
Asked by: David
Unfortunately, infrared auto-focus assist beams will not trigger or work in tandem with mirrorless cameras. This is unfortunately a limitation of mirrorless technology.
