Canon EL-1 Overview

Power, connectivity, and reliability, the Canon Speedlite EL-1 is an on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II-compatible flash characterized by its flexibility to suit a variety of lighting needs. Featuring a xenon flashtube, greater exposure stability is possible along with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and versatile exposure control from full 1/1 power down to 1/8192 power. Also distinct, the EL-1 utilizes the LP-EL rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack to promote shorter recycle times of around 0.9 sec, approximately 335 flashes per charge, and it contributes to improved thermal management and the flash's active cooling system.

The EL-1 fully supports EL-series RT flashes via its built in radio trigger and receiver. It can trigger up to 15 RT-series receiver Speedlites to produce light freely even when not attached to the camera. For even more creative possibilities, the EL-1 features Second-Curtain Sync. The flash has a rugged physical design equivalent to the dust and water-resistance of the EOS-1D-series camera bodies. Its improved user interface incorporates an updated joystick design, display, and control layout and it features a tunable LED modeling lamp to help previsualize the lighting. Additionally, the flash head can fully swivel 180° left and right, bounce upward 120°, and it includes a built-in wide panel.

Canon EL-1 Reviews

Nice improvement over EF

Was using Profoto A10 flash units & was frustrated with the delay to sync with camera when turning on and lack of TTL capabilities - which was important for event photography. This Canon flash syncs with camera immediately and TTL works great.

Workhorse of a Flash

I own three of the Canon flashes and use them with the Canon R5. As a professional photographer, I travel across the USA, Canada, and abroad for my work. I considered the Godox V1 Flash, but I felt that it was poorly built and wouldn't be able to handle the heavy workload I have. One of my clients is Reuters News, and it's not uncommon for me to shoot several thousand photos in a day, with flash being used 90 percent of the time, mostly in manual mode. The recycle time in high-speed mode is less than 0.9 seconds, and it also has Slow Sync, which the Godox flash doesn't have. It is a bit heavier, but at the end of the day, I wanted solid professional build quality with superior Canon support, as I am a Canon Pro member. You will not be disappointed. When you want the best, you need to pay for it. People notice, especially the client.

Can it be remotely triggered using the Pocket wizard Plus lll?
Asked by: Raul
Yes you can but you would need another pocket wizard to connect to the sync port on the Canon EL-1, but then you can trigger it remotely with the Pocket Wizard Plus III.

Yes, if you use the Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver. 2) on the hot shot of a canon camera you could use this flash off camera as long as the camera shoe is 5 pin. The new multifunction hot shoes may require an adapter.

I use a godox S-style mount for my speedlights with elinchrom modifiers - will this fit or is it too big?
Asked by: Glenn
So I bought the el-1, and as I suspected, the head is too big for the S-type bracket, at least the old style made for Elinchrom. They now have a new version, but it only works with bowens mounts. Once again, I cant tell whether the new mount would fit; and if it did, Id need some adapter to go from bowens to elinchrom.

Im NEW to this. Does this amazing flash really require a separate purchase of an external battery power bank? or are the rechargeable batteries good enough to get by with, provided we bring 2 or 3 with us on-site?
Asked by: Jimmy
Unfortunately, you've not given us enough information to go on to properly assess your battery/power requirements. The Canon EL-1 speedlight's rechargeable LP-EL battery lasts 335 shots at full power. Depending on your requirements, you might require a few extra batteries to last the day/event.
