Roland P-20HD Overview

Designed for single-person operation in school sports and eSports productions, the Roland P-20HD Video Instant Replayer offers an efficient 1080p60 workflow for displaying instant replays and variable speed playback, applying effects and transitions, and applying logos, jingles, and voiceovers. It features a compact and portable standalone hardware design that conserves your computer's GPU power. It can also be connected to switchers to expand your production for a larger distribution workflow.
Connectivity and Interface
Connections include two HDMI inputs with scalers, an HDMI output and HDMI preview output (to computers/displays), and RCA L/R audio inputs and outputs. An SD card slot allows you to record everything even as you cue up replays.
Local Sports Production
Using intuitive controls and the integrated color LCD, you can easily cue up replays of important action to let fans relive the moment, either on your streaming feed or live event screens, or both at once.
eSports
With its integrated recording and instant playback capabilities, the P-20HD is highly suitable for eSports broadcasting and live streaming. The standalone hardware design provides dedicated processing, conserving computer GPU resources for gameplay.
Simultaneous Record and Replay
Records directly to high-capacity SD cards, sold separately. As you cue up and replay clips, the game keeps recording in the background, with no gaps in the action. An SD card will also hold school logos, sponsor graphics, and other still images. Images can be recalled on cue and layered on top of the recorded clips or displayed at Full HD resolution. You can also add a jingle, music clip, or voiceover file to the SD card and play it back on cue.
Workflow Integration
The P-20HD can be seamlessly integrated into a variety of workflows. Use it on its own or with a video switcher. Connect two cameras and switch/composite between sources to capture them for replay. Both HDMI inputs feature built-in scalers, providing worry-free connectivity with nearly any video source.
Single-Operator Workflow
A single operator can easily mark, cue, and replay clips while managing other elements of the production. Simply register events as clips with button taps while recording and then instantly play them back with dedicated panel switches.
Built-In Preview Monitor
With its onboard color display, the P-20HD makes it simple to manage and execute your workflow in real time. In recording view, the screen shows the current video input plus critical SD card information, such as recording duration, remaining storage space, and available time. In playback view, you can display cropped previews of all video clips for live replay or compilation into playlists.
Direct-Access Controls
Filled with single-task hardware controls, the P-20HD provides an efficient hands-on experience. Dedicated transport buttons include play, pause, forward, rewind, mark in, and mark out. A jog/shuttle wheel with optical encoding allows precise, fluid control to scrub clips for replay and editing, while the T-bar lets you adjust the playback speed. Engaging the Speed Range function enables ultra-fine control, suitable for focusing in on tight action and contested plays.
Highlight and Training Reels
After the action is over, use the media playlist builder to aggregate clips into curated pro videos, ready for distribution and sharing on your favorite platform. Celebrate the best moments of a game on social media or distribute practice and training sessions to coaches and players for further evaluation.
High-Quality Sound Processing
Stereo audio input/output is supported via embedded HDMI and analog RCA jacks, and a headphone jack allows for signal monitoring. Onboard EQ, limiter, and delay effects are also available to enhance the sound and eliminate audio and video sync issues.
Universal File Compatibility
The P-20HD records natively in H.264, one of the most universally supported file formats available. H.264 maintains high quality even at low bit rates, providing excellent video at reduced file sizes. All the most popular online video platforms accept H.264 format, letting you upload files created on the P-20HD with no conversion steps in between. (For maximum recording stability, the P-20HD automatically divides the recording file every three minutes.)
A Growing Investment
The P-20HD is ready with the most-requested instant replay features today and a roadmap for future capabilities that include: RS-232/LAN support, control via external footswitches, video file export, and live annotation and drawing overlay via an optional tablet device and stylus.
Video and Audio Effects
  • Picture-in-picture and split
  • Cut, mix, and wipe transitions
  • Flip horizontal, still image playback, and test pattern output
  • Delay, high-pass filter, compressor, and noise gate
  • Equalizer, limiter, and test tone output

Roland P-20HD Reviews

Functional As A 1-channel Replay Machine

Roland Was Smart To Make A Small, Portable, Relatively Inexpensive Replay Solution. It's A Market That's There For Sure, As More And More High Schools And Smaller Productions Have Spring Up In This Age Of Easy Live Streaming. I Give Them Full Kudos For It. (And The Fact That It Can Be Integrated/triggered From His Mid-range Switcher Line Is Pretty Amazing). On The Downside, Even Though It Has Two Inputs, It's Functionally A One-channel Replay Machine. You Can Only Record/playback One Of The Channels At A Time. (And The One You're Not On, Isn't Recorded While You're Not On It). It Also Fails In The Most Basic Operation: Quickly Rewinding And Playing Back. All I Want Is A Box That Has A Live Button And A Wheel That I Can Spin Back Quickly. I Understand That Engineering A Variable Speed Jog Wheel Is Probably Complicated, But At The Very Least, There Should Be A Way To Set The Default Speed When The Wheel Is Turned. 2x Or 3x Or Something. You Can Have It Set To "shuttle" Mode, But It's Not Precise Enough For A Single Person To Use On The Fly. You Tilt It 1mm Too Far And It Goes Back Super Fast. In The Case Of The Roland P-20HD, Your Switcher Is Getting A Live Source, Which Is In The Main Window, And The Replay Source In The Second Window. You Will See Live Play Continue On The Left Side When You Frame By Frame Scroll Back The Replay Window. (which Is Agonizingly Slow). If You Want To Send A Replay To The Main Feed, You Hit A Button To Switch It To Replay Mode And It Immediately Switches. (As Of Now, There Is No Way To Add A Graphical Stinger With The Machine Alone, But It May Be Possible When Paired With A Roland Switcher. There Are Default Transitions, Like Mix, Or A Corner Wipe, But Nothing Like A Real Switcher). With The Firmware Upgrade, There Is Thankfully The Option To Start The Playback Speed At The Position That The T-bar Is In, So It Will Immediately Go To The Other Window And Play Slowly. I Am A Professional Replay Operator, And Have Used Many Replay Machines. I Think That Roland Put A Lot Of Work Into Getting The Clip-saving Part Of The Process Fairly Solid, But Just Didn't Think About Having A Replay Ready As Soon As Possible. I Am Going To Be Testing This On A Real Live Event In A Couple Weeks, And I Have A Feeling That I Will Have To Use It Sparingly. Again, The Ideal Replay Solution Would Be Something Where I Can Just Roll The Wheel Back To An In, And Playback In Slo Mo Quickly. Having A Graphical Stinger Flash On The Replay Would Be Ideal. I Would Encourage The Roland Engineers To Shadow A Replay Operator At A Sporting Event Using A Broadcast Replay Machine So They Can See How It's Used. On Those Machines You Make A Couple Turns Of The Wheel And You're Back At The Start Of A Play And You Can Play Just By Twitching The T-bar. It's Faster Than Is Possible On The Roland.

I'd say it's 5 stars, but they are half-stars.

Roland built a solid unit, but the resolution and quality of that image are too low in my estimation 10Mbps is kind of low-quality, and I feel that they could have done better. Also, you can import images, but not make them a stinger. What's the sense of doing Replay without a stinger? There is a replay button, so using this as a stand-alone replay system without a stinger makes me think it wasn't planned to work that way. Use it with a video switcher that could use a stinger, but then you still only have 1 channel of recorded replay. Why? 2 Inputs, but only 1 record. Nice, but not good enough. Plus the original MSRP was way overpriced given its image quality, another dunk in the trunk.

Asked by: Adam
The second HDMI input on the Roland P-20HD Video Instant Replayer would be a Picture picture effect or split screen that could be embedded into the recording. You can composite the two video signals (PinP or SPLIT), and record and replay the result.
