    Great Replacement of Drobo 5N

    By James
    Rated 5 out of 5

I purchased the Synology DS1821+ to replace a failed Drobo 5N and have not been disappointed. I upgraded the base configuration with an additional 16GB of RAM, and 800GB NVMe card, and a Dual-Port 10Gb/s PCIe Expansion Card. This thing just hums and has plenty of capacity to take me well into the future.

    Great device

I've got one of these running iSCSI to 3 vm hosts and SMB shares to 10+ workstations. I've yet to have performance issues and the flexibility of the 'apps' available is excellent!

Easy seamless upgrade from my DS1815+

Easy upgrade from my old DS1815+. Moved the disks over and it all just worked.

Great for main data and backup!

Instead of saving info on individual computers, our small organization chose to store all data on a Synology NAS. We use it heavily daily. When our 2015 NAS died, we replaced it with a DS1821+. The transfer process was seamless and we were up and running again in just a short period of time. In the past, when a computer died and we had data on it, it required hours of work to get everything restored. We also backup this NAS to an offsite NAS (Synology 2017). With no tech people on staff, Synology makes the whole process easy for all of us! Thanks Synology... and thanks B&H for your helpful service!

Lots and lots of disk space

8 x 16 TB in Raid 6 configuration - with 10G networking and 4GB cache combine into a great storage subsystem for me.

Works well but slightly slower than the older one

My DS1815+ died again and I got this unit in quickly (thank you B&H) and got the drives migrated in 30 minutes and was back in business. The performance is slightly less on reads but the writes are the same.

I added this system coming from an old 2 bay DS213j and it's so fast. The SSD caching option was a huge plus. I'm only using 5 of the 8 bays with the Seagate's iron wolf pro HDD in a SHR configuration and it's doing what I need. The software is so robust and I have a lot of room for expansion.

    Asked by: Vasha
With 8 bays you just need to tell storage manager to expand the volume to include the new drives you install up to your 8 bays. You can even replace the existing drives with larger drives and maintain the same volume. Im doing that now. Going from 6Tb drives to 10TB drives in the same volume. Note: I cannot add extra drives because Im already using all 8 bays.

If you had let's say 6TB per slot then want to increase space, can you just replace one slot at a time with larger space, like 10TB. Can you then rebuild the raid, then replace another slot, repeat, until all slots are 10TB each?
    Asked by: Watson
Stephen's answer is correct. You can do exactly what you say, you just have to do it one disk at a time waiting until the array rebuilds each time. Note that this might take a LONG TIME, depending upon the amount of data on the array. Also, the performance of the array will be degraded somewhat during the rebuild. Usable, but lower performance. REMEMBER, you MUST set up your original array as either SHR1 or SHR2 (Synology Hybrid RAID) to be able to expand your array as you wish. If you use the standard RAIDs such as 5 or 6, the array will only use the portion of the drives of the size smallest drive in the array. AND, you cannot upgrade a drive later on. The entire array needs to be backed up, reconfigured with the new drives, then restored from the backup. BTW, I have an 1815+ with a 5 bay expander, and have been using them for over 5 years.
