Westcott FJ200 Reviews

A lighting kit worth its value

By Mike

This kit included many of the lighting tools needed to experience most aspects of two light setups. Website instructions for use of the equipment were well defined and the lighting equipment was built with ease of use for new users. I went with WESTCOTT because of its features of portability, and built in battery longevity. I will definitely stay with this product line to complete my lighting needs.

Travel Friendly, easy to use, feature packed

I recently purchased the 3 light fj200 kit and it is an impressive product, to say the least. The fj200s provide a consistent flash output both in terms of color and power. If you are wondering if this small 200ws flash can become your new daily drive.... The TLDR is YES it can. It's a flash and it flashes exactly as it's intended to. But so do a lot of other products, so what sets the FJ200 apart from its competitors? The user interface is so easy to navigate! I was a little concerned at first with the lack of buttons on the back of the unit, but I quickly learned this was one of the strongest features of the unit. The LED screen on the back should become the new industry standard for flash control. Gone are the days of having to remember what every button does and what menus are buried under what buttons. It is also feature-packed with things like high-speed sync, front, and rear curtain flash, and all the options and features you would expect from a modern flash. It's a good idea to pick up their universal controller that also works with ALL camera types and it's just as easy to use as the lights. It's also really cool that one controller can work with every type of camera out there. If you use gels, you should seriously consider picking up their grid/gel kit. There is a magnetic flap in the front of the grid/gel holder that makes using gels hassle-free. I cannot believe that this is the first time I have seen this system for holding gels, like the LED menu screen this should now be the industry standard for gels. Just fold down the gel holder, put the gel in place, and fold it back up letting the magnetic flaps hold the gel in place. Done in seconds. No more attaching multiple binder clips or clothespins to the edge of the lights and dealing with light leaks. The magnetic flap holds the gel in place and covers 100% of the output. If you shoot weddings, on-location work, travel, outdoor portraits, Then I highly recommend the FJ200s. I think the only area where the fj200 would struggle would be lighting up a huge scene, such as putting them in the ceiling of gyms to light up an entire arena... but that is to be expected with a 200ws flash unit that is about the size of a coffee thermos.

Lightweight, with an excellent user interface

This strobes rounds out my kit that previously just included 2 400ws heads. It's handy to have a 200ws unit to light backgrounds or as a hair light. The strobe is compact and solidly built, with a good LCD screen and simple controls that get to the heart of your settings quickly. The battery that fits into the lower rear section of the strobe can hold over 400 full power pops (I haven't gone far above that so I don't know the total capacity). There's a separate charger so you'll be needing to remove the battery for that function. You cannot charge the battery in the strobe. An AC adapter is optional and it will require that you remove the battery to use it. Also part of the kit is a retaining ring that can hold colored gels (included) or the rigid baffle for light control. Perhaps the only negative is that you'll need the optional adapter to accept larger modifier mounts, such as the Bowens S. If you don't need that, then leave the light stand/pivot bracket on the strobe head that's included in the kit. Other standard parts in this set include a reflector, USB A to C cord for firmware updating, and a carry case. Recycle time is really fast, even after a full power burst. Remote control via the multi-camera FJ-X2m. All in all, this is a very competent, fairly priced strobe head.

Great compact strobe with battery

This is a great addition to my kit. I also have the Westcott FJ400 in my home studio. I used the FJ200 on a shoot just the other day and it worked flawlessly and it's nice to complete a shoot on one battery charge. Plus it gives you more options than a speedlight for use with modifiers, but you'll need to purchase the Westcott Quick Mount S-Bracket for use with a Bowens mount modifier.

I dig this little strobe. It is small and relatively light. It even fits in my camera backpack. It works well with Westcott's wireless trigger and other strobes. I only wish it had a Bowens mount adapter.

What are the flash durations at each power level?

What are the flash durations at each power level?
Asked by: Michael
Westcott does not list the flash duration of the Westcott FJ200 Strobe at all power settings. They only list the maximum and minimum flash duration, showing the t0.1 flash duration measurement (when the light is emitting 90% of total light) in normal mode is 1/260 second at full power and 1/2600 second at minimum power, and in freeze mode, the flash duration at minimum output is 1/7000 second. At the t0.5 measurement (when the light is emitting 50% of total light), at normal mode, the flash duration would be 1/800 second at full power and 1/8000 second at minimum output power, while at freeze mode, the duration at minimum output would be 1/20,000 second. For flash duration measurement at other output settings, you would have to contact Westcott directly by e-mailing them at [email protected] or by calling them toll-free at 1-800-886-1689 Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm ET.

What's the life of the "unreplaceable" Flashtube on the FJ200? (asking 10/6/21)

The flashtube can be replaced by Westcott directly. They state that the life expectancy is about 10,000 flashes.

Can this work as a slave ?
Asked by: rochelle
If the Westcott FJ200 Strobe is set to Manual mode, you may use the built-in optical sensor to fire the strobe once it detects the light output from another photographic strobe/flash. Likewise, if you connect the Westcott FJ-X2m Universal Flash Trigger to your camera's hot shoe, you may wirelessly trigger the Westcott FJ200 using the wireless radio remote as the FJ200 has a built-in integrated FJ Wireless Flash System radio receiver.

Somebody asked if this uses a Bowens mount and someone replied yes. But I watched an FStoppers video for this light and Lee said it uses a smaller proprietary mount. This looks very similar to the new Godox AD300 Pro which uses a proprietary Godox mount. So which mount is this light actually using? Could it be the same as the AD300 Pro?
Asked by: Bill
Correct..the FJ200 (Jinbei HD-200pro) does not have a Bowens mount.. The mount is a 72mm diameter fitting with 4 locking tabs, as opposed to the full sized Bowens mount that has only 3 tabs.

Why does the link to B&H for a Bowens Mount result in showing a Godox S2 Speedlite Bracket for Bowens? Does that mean that the S-2 type Bowens mount would work with this strobe? And the 'Part # link' shows no such item. Is there a Bowens mount for this strobe. Asking 10/3/21.
