This gray portable solid-state drive connects to your compatible Windows or Mac computer through a high-speed USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C connector and includes a USB-A adapter for convenience and compatibility. Featuring a fast NVMe solid-state drive inside a shock and vibration-resistant metal casing, the My Passport SSD is designed to deliver read speeds of up to 1050 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000 MB/s. This SSD works with the iPhone 15/15 Pro via the Apple Files App and supports direct HD video capture on iPhone 15 Pro. It does not support ProRes video.

Shot a whole vacation's worth of footage and photos only to have the entire folder completely disappear from the drive the night before we left to go home. Called Western Digital support and their best recommendation was to use a third-party software to try to recover the files. No offer to replace/repair device. What an absolute disgrace!

Drive keeps dropping

The performance of this drive is far less than expected. It continuously looses connection, then reconnects, to my PC in the middle of copying files requiring the copy to be restarted. The same cable & USB port works perfectly fine with other drives (including the 2TB version of this WD drive). Looking at the Sandisk/WD website there was an error with an earlier version of the firmware for this and some other 4TB SSD's, but according to the website and their tools this drive has the latest firmware version. Still waiting to hear back from Sandisk/WD regarding the support case that was created for this issue.

If I use two of these as a concatenated raid drive (Mac OS10.14.6), would I get a lower speed than when using a single drive?

In general RAID speeds can be faster than single drive speeds, but that is dependent on the level of RAID used and the interface type/bandwidth.

I'm wanting HDs to use as permanent storage to backup large photos files. Is this a good solution as a HD backup system?

The WD 4TB My Passport SSD USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C Portable SSD (Gray) can be used for backing up photos, but for permanent storage, I would recommend a NAS solution like the Synology 8TB DiskStation DS223 2-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Seagate IronWolf NAS Drives (2 x 4TB) (B&H # SYDS2238TBK, https://bhpho.to/3V8fQd3), as the photos will be backed up in case a drive fails, and you can also upgrade the storage later on if you need more.
