Opticron Gallery Reviews

Unique product, tiny but with great optics

As a frequent hiker and traveler, I like to have a way to spot distant subjects, but am always looking to minimize weight and bulk. I already have a monocular, but found myself often leaving it behind to save precious ounces and space in my backpack. I took a chance on this Opticron ("Made in Japan" was definitely an incentive) and it turned out to be nearly perfect. It produces a very crisp image edge to edge with a fairly wide angle of view. It is sharp both at distance and close up. I was worried it would be more optimized for closer distances, but that is not the case with my copy. Because it has a metal body, it has a nice quality feel and focuses easily and smoothly even in cold weather while wearing gloves. The close up capabilities are rather fascinating, and this will be very useful when traveling to tourist attractions or museums where I often have trouble reading the interpretive signs. I like that it has little caps to protect the ends, as well as a provided case. The reason it's not perfect is there is no weather sealing, and I will not be using this in rain or wind-driven snow. As such, I keep it in a Ziploc bag at all times. However, I was aware of this limitation before making the purchase, and understand the intended use of the product is not for all sorts of outdoor conditions, hence the perfect rating. The most important factor is that this monocular has not left my backpack since I received it, so I consider that a successful purchase in my case. I am glad B&H offers these rather unique niche products.

Sweet little monocular for taking everywhere

I thought this might be a frivolous purchase, but I've found it to be incredibly handy. It is light and small and easily fits into my pack pocket. Great for seeing details on birds and for looking at textures up close. The optics are super clear. I'm afraid I will lose the lens caps, but otherwise, this is a great tool for anyone who likes to travel light. Love it.
