Designed for a wide array of workflow needs, the Mercury Elite Pro Quad 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 RAID Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing features dual SATA drive bays that support both 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs and SSDs. It connects to your host system using a 10 Gb/s USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, which provides data transfers of up to 1250 MB/s and is compatible with Windows and Mac. The Mercury Elite Pro Quad is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3, as well as 5 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 480 Mb/s USB 2.0. A software RAID is driven by SoftRAID software and supports both RAID and JBOD configurations, while a 92mm cooling fan ensures adequate thermal offloading and a Kensington Lock slot can be used to secure the enclosure. Included is a USB-C to USB-C cable, a USB-C to USB-A cable, two security keys, and an external power cable.

OWC Pro Quad Overview

Designed for a wide array of workflow needs, the Mercury Elite Pro Quad 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 RAID Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing features dual SATA drive bays that support both 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs and SSDs. It connects to your host system using a 10 Gb/s USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, which provides data transfers of up to 1250 MB/s and is compatible with Windows and Mac. The Mercury Elite Pro Quad is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3, as well as 5 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 480 Mb/s USB 2.0. A software RAID is driven by SoftRAID software and supports both RAID and JBOD configurations, while a 92mm cooling fan ensures adequate thermal offloading and a Kensington Lock slot can be used to secure the enclosure. Included is a USB-C to USB-C cable, a USB-C to USB-A cable, two security keys, and an external power cable.

Please note that RAID functionality requires OWC's SoftRAID RAID software, which is sold separately. M1 Macs require macOS 11.3 or later. SoftRAID is licensed per computer.

Very solid build, exactly what a HDD enclosure should be. The fan is relatively quiet. Worth the money.

Electrical buzzing noise

Unfortunately I never got to use this. Bought it after two units from Amazon exhibited an electrical buzzing sound when powered on. They had similar serial numbers. I bought this one and it also buzzes just the same way (with or without disks in it), and on inspection has a very similar serial number. I checked on Reddit and people say their units are silent. I also checked with OWC via Amazon's support and they confirm it should be silent. I even bought a Thunderbay 4 and that IS silent. With the serial numbers so close and both OWC and other customers telling me the buzzing noise it's expected, I think OWC have a bad batch of Mercury Elite Quad Pros out there. I'm returning all three of the ones I've tried. Still working with support to see if there's any way to get hold of a functioning unit, but I'm not holding out hope. It's a shame. The B&H deal for July 4th ($65 off) was a steal, and the hardware looks great, well built, solid, and well designed, but the units are defective. I'm now 3 for 3, so I might just have to go for some other system.
