This new and unimproved version has a feature removed that's a deal breaker for me and if you're familiar with it it may be a deal breaker for you as well. Sony In there infinite unwisdom decided to remove the quick shift bounce function and if you're not familiar with that, it allows you to take images with the flash on the camera in portrait/vertical mode without getting those harsh shadows that every other make of speedlights have and that includes the high end Profoto so needless to say I'm returning this disappointment pronto. Oh and one more thing, the display is cut in half from the previous two versions so it's very small.

The specs on this flash say "optical slave" mode. Does that mean that it can be controlled by earlier Sony flash units for TTL remote flash, or only optically triggered for manual remote flash?

Optical slave simply means that this flash can be triggered by another flash. No control is implied.

Can you be more specific about differences between F45 and F46? Such as ability to rotate flash head?

The HVL-46RM does not have a tremendous amount of differences from its predecessor. The ability to rotate the flash head remains the same (180-degrees right and left, 150-degrees up), but the main differences are recycle time (from 2.5 to 1.7 seconds), better heat management (in both the 46RM and 60RM) as well as a increase in guide number from 45 to 46m at ISO100 105mm.

Differences between prior Sony flash model F45 ...

Differences between prior Sony flash model F45 and this one F46? Thank you.

There are a few differences between the Sony HVL-F46RM Wireless Radio Flash and the Sony HVL-F45RM Wireless Radio Flash. The HVL-F46RM is able to fire 60 Consecutive Flashes at 10 fps, the older one cannot. The guide number as indicated in the name of the flash has changed slightly from 45 m to 46 m. The new flash no longer has the LED video light on the front. The new flash has a metal foot as opposed to a plastic one on the old one. These are just some of the more significant differences.
