The Sony E-mount 50mm T2.9 Anamorphic 1.6x Lens, from Sirui, is designed for filling a theater screen with rich detail, cinematic bokeh, and artistic lens flairs. One of the signature features of this lens is that it produces horizontal blue streaks when pointed at a light source, giving your footage a dreamy or science fiction aesthetic. On full-frame cameras, this lens increases the horizontal angle of view by 60%, equivalent to a wider 31mm spherical lens, and it enables the camera to see well to the left and right of your subject. An image captured in 16:9 is de-squeezed to an anamorphic 2.8:1 aspect ratio, whereas shooting in 3:2 yields a 2.4:1 final image.

Sirui 50mm T2.9 Anamorphic FF Overview

A key aspect of anamorphic lenses is oval bokeh, which can gently distort objects and lights in the distance, providing an abstract background for your actors. Its T2.9 aperture produces a shallow depth of field, blurring everything in front or behind the specifically chosen focal plane. It features female 1/4"-20 threading for mounting versatility, and its focus and aperture rings are geared for use with a follow focus system.

Sirui 50mm T2.9 Anamorphic FF Reviews

I got into anamorphic production with Sirui's 75mm — which I recommend highly as well — but this strikes a great balance of a medium almost-portrait focal length vertically, with the wide giving you lots of compositional potential. Handy for hand-held. I have a Lumix with 3:2 6K sensor which nets me a 2.39-ish aspect ratio in Resolve or Final Cut. (Premiere has tools just as good for the stretch in the edit, I just don't happen to use it much.) SmallRig's F60 meshes with the gears well, but you can handhold and focus easily. I just love the picture from the Venus series of anamorphics. I now have four. So pretty. So sharp. Great color. Try a 1/8th or 5% diffusion if you want to be kind to skin.

Bought this lens for a specific project... it was the only full frame anamorphic lens available in L mount, to be paired with my Panasonic Lumix BS1H. While it might not offer the image quality you get from the Atlas or other higher end lenses, it's actually quite nice. Surprisingly sharp, good colors and contrast, and a distinct anamorphic look from the x 1.6 squeeze. The words Anamorphic and Low Budget don't usually go together... but this lens, and the new 75mm that just came out, certainly make it possible!

Is this lens adaptable to EF?
Asked by: BAIRN
No, unfortunately, the Sirui 50mm T2.9 Full Frame 1.6x Anamorphic Lens (Sony E), cannot be adapted or modified for use with an EF mount. Mirrorless lens must be closer to the sensor, and no adapter would be able to compensate.
