Toa Electronics A-824D Reviews

TOA A-800D series not living up to old TOA standards

I've been installing TOA amplifiers for the past 22 years, relying heavily on the (now discontinued) A-700 series amplifiers. To date, I've never had to replace one. The A-800D series appears to be the functional replacement, so I started using that series. Of the two A-824D amps that I have recently installed, both have failed. The first failed during a TOA-recommended firmware update, bricking the amplifier. Fortunately, it hadn't been installed yet, but it caused a big delay in the customer's installation time-table, especially since TOA was VERY slow to acknowledge and replace the dead unit. The next A-824D died within 2 weeks of being installed. It was driving about 48W worth of 70V speakers (value measured with TOA impedance meter). Replacement time was delayed because of a couple of missing Euro connectors, rack ears, and security knobs. As a result, I am reluctant to use the A-800D series; maybe going back to the old A-900 amps & modules. I really want to like the new amplifiers, but am having a hard time doing so. Time will tell as to how the A-800D will hold up.
