From Manufacturer

The Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens is a compact, high-performance ultrawide zoom meant to compliment a photographer's arsenal by providing a versatile range of focal lengths in a small and lightweight package, without compromising on optical quality. A fast f/2.8 constant aperture allows for the use of faster shutter speeds in low-light scenarios as well as being especially useful for closeup shots thanks to its shallow depth of field.

This lens utilizes a complex arrangement of specialized aspherical and low dispersion glass elements to effectively suppress chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy. Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous Coatings have also been applied to improve contrast and color rendering by reducing lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions. The inner zoom & focus mechanism keeps the dimensions of the lens constant throughout the zoom range and at all focus distances. This design feature allows for almost no balance point shift and a fixed front element, making it an ideal instrument for videography, travel, and landscape photography.

  • Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available lighting conditions.
  • Two large-diameter aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
  • 72mm front filter thread allows for the use of common screw-in filters instead of specialized setups.
  • A stepping AF motor benefits both photographers and videographers with its fast, precise, and near-silent performance. Full-time manual focus control can also be selected.
  • Weather-resistant construction with a brass bayonet that affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.

Great and sharp lens for landscape and night photography

I got this lens to challenge myself and move out of my comfort zone of a zoom lens. The most noticeable difference was the weight - its very light and feels great carrying it for long periods of time (I hike a lot). The lens also has internal zooming, which is something I was not familiar with before. It does not bother me as much as I am used the barrel zoom of a traditional zoom lens. Moving onto sharpness - images are sharp, even at f.28. However, despite the sharpness, I did notice significant distortion and vignetting at 16mm, but that is to be expected of a lens of this type. I'm still trying out this lens and overall I would recommend it for anyone starting out with wide-angle photography.

Use this lens parfocal? And is the focus ring linear or non-linear?
Asked by: Glen
No, Sigma lenses are not parfocal. These lenses does not retain the focus if you zoom in or zoom out, however most Sony's E mount cameras provide focus tracking which mantain the subject in focus if your zooming in or out Or you can also locked focus through the camera. Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E has a linear focus ring.

Is there gonna be much difference between this and the 14-24?
Asked by: Ryan
Yes, the Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens (Sony E) definitely provides a different image than the Sigma 14-24mm; the difference between 14mm and 16mm is very visible, as is the difference between 24mm and 28mm--this is why many manufacturers make both a 24mm lens and a 28mm lens.
