Synology DS1522+ External HDD/SSD Reviews

Syncing sunk

By Kevin

Synology has moved towards a new Synology Drive software suite and it's a wreck. (Linux) Their desktop backup application constantly loses settings for which folders to back up. It might decide to start backing up rapidly changing cache directories and become forever stuck there. It runs as the current user and becomes silently stuck if it encounters any permissions issue. There are just a lot of cases where it becomes stuck and it's not backing up any more. Synology-to-Synology sync to create a backup isn't any better. I'm averaging less than 10 MB/sec (5 to 7 typical). At that rate it might never finish. Tech support says that's normal and recommends installing a pair of M.2 SSDs for a read-write cache. That's really bad out-of-the box performance. It works fine as a dumb AFP/SMB/SFTP mount as long as Synology Drive and its related components aren't active. That's a lot of promised features to abandon.

Sinology Never Fails

I recently purchased the 1522+ as a redundant backup NAS for my videography related backups. It also serves as a Plex server on my local network. This is my fourth NAS from Synology, with 3 still working away. I believe in redundancy, and this 1522+ is a welcome addition. I have currently installed 4 of the 18TB Seagate IronWolf HD's installed, and they are working perfectly. It took a while to copy all 7TB of backups to the new NAS, along with my 7TB of videos, but are all copied and performing as expected. I have no lag or stuttering to any of my 13 devices on my local network. I am also able to access my NAS from anywhere, due to the accessibility of Synology account. I highly recommend this NAS to anyone looking for massive storage, and a great Plex server.

A complex yet capable Dropbox replacement

After researching NAS drives to replace my outdated Drobo 5N, I decided on a Synology product due to the myriad success stories and praises across the internet. I chose the DS1522+ based on the 5 bay capacity so I could transfer my WD Red Plus drives to the new unit without losing capacity. I must say I was excited to get the server-like capabilities that Drobo didn't offer. Upon ordering I downloaded the pdf manual and printed it to read and familiarize myself with the unit. I was disappointed because the manual is mostly a compendium of links to blog posts on the Synology web pages. Transferring the pdf to my pdf reader at least let me follow the links. I must say this unit is far more capable than my expectations. These additional capabilities bring along greater complexity in setup. Once setup though the DS1522+ has performed admirably with my set of "practice" disks. I opted to operate with 2 2TB drives raided and one 4TB drive. These were set up as two storage pools with a single volume each. Within these volumes I was able to create discrete shares all with independent priveledges! I like this idea so I can create a 2-drive mirrored store for backups independent of my general data store. The Disk Station Manager (v7.1) is functional and complete. The UI can be cumbersome and confusing at times. Several trips to "Help" were needed during use. When all is said and done, I think I made the right choice going with Synology's hardware. The software is just a necessary evil and not that big of a distract or because in regular operation the software is unused. I am a little confused about Synology's requirement to establish an account with them in order to enable some features, I need to do some research on this.

Big name unsupported drives

I have been a Synology user for 10 years now, and was looking gladly to replace my DS1512, and make the jump to 10GBe... How ever, as of the 4Q 2022... Synology has yet to include higher end drives like the WD Red Pro and Seagate IronWolf Pro (aka 7200rpm Drives) on their official Hardware Compatibility List... instead opting to push Synology branded HDD's at 2x the average price... This should serve as a warning to others, something is afoot... - The system is still useable, but the system will complain at you ever step of the way and display warnings permanently in DSM Control.

Can I migrate my current HDS5C4040ALE630 (HGST 4TB Drives) from my old DS1513+ to this DS1522+ device?
Asked by: ALESSANDRO C
The HDS5C4040ALE630 HDDs are not listed as compatible with the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure. I order to migrate your data will need to populate the DS1522+ with drives that are compatible, like the WD 4TB WD40EFPX Red Plus SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (B&H # WEDBC9V004H1, MFR #WDBC9V0040HH1-WRSN) then use the Synology Migration Assistant to migrate your DS1513+ to the DS1522+.

Can you move hard drives directly from Drobo? Have a4 2TB drives with lots of data that I cannot loose.
Asked by: Layne
Hard drives cannot be moved directly from one RAID enclosure to another. All data on the array should be backed up to a separate location. The drives can then be formatted (wiped) and, if compatible, installed into the new enclosure. After setup data will have to be transferred to the new array manually.

Is this fast enough to handle video editing from 2-4 machines simultaneously?
Asked by: Jeremy
For video editing the bottle-neck will most likely be the LAN speed. Better to go for a NAS with 10GB adapter. The DS1522+ can add a 10GB adapter (E10G22-T1-Mini RJ45 10G) and the extended five drive bays DX517. The CPU may be a bit under powered, and you should definitely try to bump up the RAM as much as possible.

Can oui mix HDD and SSD in the same machine, likeby using 3 SSD and 2 HDD? Can we use different different storage capacit for HDD, like 2 16 T and one 12T or they all have to be the same? Thank you
Asked by: Lina
It is possible to mix storage types in a Synology NAS, but when doing so it is recommended to use the different types of drive in separate storage pools. A RAID storage volume containing both an HDD and an SSD will only be able to run at the slower speed of the HDD, so the enhanced speed of the SSD would be wasted.
