7Artisans 4mm F/2.8 Fisheye Lens Review

7Artisans 4mm F/2.8 Fisheye Lens Review Manual Controls and Handling: The 7Artisans 4mm F/2.8 Fisheye Lens features fully manual aperture and focus controls, allowing photographers to have complete command over their shooting experience. The mechanical focusing ring operates with remarkable smoothness and is marked with a distance scale in meters, ranging from 0.085 meters to infinity. This range is covered in less than a quarter of a turn, making it fast and intuitive to set your focus. Similarly, the mechanical aperture ring turns effortlessly and is designed without click indents, offering seamless transitions between aperture values. A removable lever is attached to the aperture ring, making it easy to distinguish from the focusing ring—a thoughtful addition that enhances usability. Build Quality and Design Improvements: The lens cap is crafted from metal and provides a secure fit on the lens itself. While some earlier reviews mentioned issues such as a loose-fitting cap or an aperture ring lever that was excessively long—potentially leading to accidental adjustments or interference with tripods—these concerns have been addressed. The current version offers a well-fitting cap and a shortened, removable aperture ring lever, ensuring these problems are resolved. Image Quality: At its widest aperture of f/2.8, the lens delivers sharp and contrasty images from the center all the way to the edges. Stopping down to f/4 brings a slight improvement in sharpness and contrast, which remains excellent through to f/8. Beyond that, at f/11, a bit of softness becomes apparent due to diffraction, and by f/16, the image quality is noticeably softer. Despite this, the lens provides outstanding results even when used with higher-resolution sensors. Notably, there is a minimal presence of chromatic aberration, which is uncommon for fisheye lenses and adds to the lens's appeal. Close Focusing Capability: The lens boasts a minimum focusing distance of just 8.5 cm (3.3 inches), enabling impressive close-up shots with a dramatic fisheye effect. Field of View and Shooting Experience: With an expansive 225o angle of view, the lens can actually capture scenes behind itself, opening up creative possibilities for unique perspectives. However, photographers should be mindful of their positioning, as it is easy to accidentally include their own head, feet, or fingers in the frame if the camera is not held carefully or mounted on a tripod. Portability: Weighing in at just 201 grams (7.1 ounces), this lens is extremely compact and light, making it a convenient addition to any camera bag without adding significant bulk. Conclusion: The 7Artisans 4mm F/2.8 Fisheye Lens is an enjoyable and creative tool, producing a distinctive circular fisheye image that encourages experimentation. Given its reasonable price and strong performance, it is an excellent choice for photographers looking to expand their creative horizons. Highly recommended!

Great for geo panoramas

I bought the lens to make geo panoramas. It has a 225° field of view so it's easy to crop in to get 180°. I've been very pleased with the lens' sharpness. Focus is difficult so most of what I do is at infinity, and with so much depth of field, it works well.
