Leica M6 Reviews
Make sure you get a warranty from Leica or someone if you buy this
Word of caution - I bought mine (the m6 reissue) used from another camera owner trying to save a few bucks. However, it jammed after 6 months of use and I had to send it into Leica for repairs and paid $900 for it. Word of caution - buy from B&H new or used or somewhere you can get a warranty. Newer doesn't mean it's mechanically more reliable than an old M6 as I learned from experience. It's a beautiful film camera and feels great to use. However, the mechanical reliability is definitely not great and repair costs are not cheap so get a warranty if you can.
Mine was a film scratcher.
First off - I did not buy my new M6 from B&H but I wish I had because they would have just accepted a return. Mine was one of many that scratched film which is unbelievable for any camera whether it is $20 or $6000. It also had an ISO dial which could not be set properly - the settings were always between the markings. It took Leica months and several attempts to fix and it ended up being a bad batch of pressure plates. Which is inexcusable given the price point and the supposed quality control checks it goes through. Now that it is fixed it is great but there was serious buyer’s remorse for a while! Lesson learned - next time I’ll be buying from B&H as they would have taken care of me. As for the camera itself? Well I also have a black paint MP and of course the M6 is basically the same camera but with the red dot, M6 marking, hinged film advance lever and canted rewind knob. I replaced the hinged lever with one from an MP as it feels much nicer and more solid. But given the choice of only having one - I’d pick the MP as the black paint is warmer/stickier to the touch and ages much nicer.
