Optoma Technology HZ40HDR Reviews

HZ40HDR unbiased review

Overall I like the projector, I mean in a few times I tried it it works and, well, projects. It is not spectacular, the image is very nice only in dark environment. It is more than bright enough to enjoy and forget that it's a projected image and not an active screen, but it will never match a LED TV screen which you can easily watch in a day lit room. You can't do that with the HZ40HDR. My biggest disappointment with the unit is something they never mention in any description of the product and you'd never suspect: this projector cannot project an image straight to a wall/screen in front of it, at zero angle. It can either project up as if sitting horizontally on a table below screen level, or down as when mounted also horizontally on the ceiling. Granted, it offers keystone correction for such angles, but keep in mind - if you have, say, a shelf on the opposite wall on about the same height as the center of the screen, projector is not capable to project directly straight on the screen - you CANNOT tilt it and point to the screen and then keystone correct. It projects *only* up or down, and minimum angle is about 25 degrees. I ended up positioning the projector on the shelf at the angle - it now projects right, but looks very silly - see photo. The second shortcoming is lack of video delay function. A standard feature in most TVs is the audio can be set to be ahead of video (it works by delaying the video - the same thing) to compensate for audio delay in bluetooth connection, so the video on screen ends up in sync with the audio if a bluetooth speakers or headphones are used. Without video delay function if the audio is badly lagging and is out of sync due to slow(ish) bluetooth connection, you're out of luck. The HZ40HDR does not have this compensation function. I suppose for wired connection this should not be an issue. Built in speakers are telephone quality at best - you can understand what is being said, but you're not going to enjoy music from built-in speakers. Other than these limitations, I don't have any complains. Would I recommend the HZ40HDR? If issues described above are not the concern, then yes, I would. It's a minimalist Spartan design and good value for money, provided it will keep working reliably.

Great budget projector

I've had a few brands of projector over the past decade. For the price this one is great. Clear picture with manual focus. This was a sticking point for me as I tried a budget amazon projector recently that ONLY had auto focus. It would not provide a crisp, clear image in a darkened room without any external light sources. Immediately upon installing this Optoma unit, I became a fan. I also beats out the AAXA projector I had before for few years before it failed. Definitely worth a comparison while you are shopping.
