OM SYSTEM TG-7 Overview

Document Your Journey
Built to withstand the rugged conditions of outdoor life, the OM System Tough TG-7 Digital Camera provides you with a high-quality point-and-shoot you can rely on. Its 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor deliver excellent photo and video performance even in low-light conditions with a wide maximum aperture of f/2 and ISO up to 12,800. While maintaining much of the previous model's framework, the TG-7 introduces several new features such as vertical video support, interval shooting, exposure smoothing, and USB-C connectivity. With these added benefits, you're prepared to capture scenes and upload them directly to your devices with ease by navigating the camera's 3" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor. Additionally, the TG-7 is compatible with 17 unique accessories that can be purchased to further expand the camera's capabilities including fisheye/tele-converters, underwater housings, lens protection filters, and much more.
Ultra Resilient
The TG-7 is built to perform no matter the conditions you’re faced with:

  • IPX8-rated waterproof for underwater use to depths of 50’
  • Freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14°F
  • Shockproof to drops from as high as 7'
  • Crushproof to withstand pressure up to 220 lbf
  • Dustproof to protect the internal components of the camera
  • Antifog design prevents condensation from forming inside the lenses
Improved Video Functions
The TG-7 improves upon an already impressive array of video functionality with the addition of some new features. Vertical video support allows you to seamlessly record video in vertical aspect ratios, perfect for vlogging and sharing on social media. Interval shooting enables you to take multiple photos spaced out over a set period of time to better capture action or time-lapses. Pro Capture mode helps you freeze the perfect moment in an action sequence by buffering images when the shutter button is at half-press. The TG-7 saves up to 70 images of the most recently buffered images both before and after the shutter button is released.
Expansive Macro System
Extend past the TG-7's 4x optical zoom with four macro shooting modes for capturing scenes up close. Select Microscope mode to capture images with an incredibly short minimum focusing distance of 0.39". To zoom up to 44x closer, switch to Microscope Control mode. Utilize Focus Stacking mode to merge multiple images and create one photo with great depth of field. Focus Bracketing allows you to capture up to 30 images at various focus points which can then be composited in post-production. Having these macro capabilities at your disposal makes it easy to capture the finest details of your subject and visualize creative perspectives that are unfamiliar to the naked eye.
Advanced Underwater Shooting
Photograph and record video at depths as deep as 50 feet with generous features that simplify underwater shooting. Underwater White Balance mode provides a solution to regaining accurate color tones that you can lose as you dive deeper underwater.
12MP BSI CMOS Sensor & TruePic VIII Processor
Utilizing a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor, the TG-7 delivers brilliant stills and videos with rich colors. Both sides of the image sensor's sealing glass have an antireflective coating that reduces flaring, which commonly occurs when shooting in conditions that have snow, dust, or sand. The sensor's BSI has an f/2 maximum aperture to ensure cleaner image quality at higher ISO values. For maximum detail and control for photo editing, shoot in RAW format. The processor enables recording UHD 4K30p video and high-speed Full HD 1080p video at up to 120 fps.
Keep Track While Adventuring
The TG-7's Field Sensor System includes GPS, a manometer, a compass, and a thermometer allowing you to record important data about your environment and include it in your photos and videos. Easily transfer your recorded data and imagery to a mobile device using built-in Wi-Fi. In addition to wireless transfer, the built-in Wi-Fi also allows you to remotely control the camera.

OM SYSTEM TG-7 Reviews

Tough, small and feature laden

I haven't had it very long, but it is a small camera with small dials, buttons, etc. If you have large hands, this could be a bit difficult to navigate. It has a lot of features so there is a definite learning curve. An actual manual would have been nice instead of a quick guide in multiple languages that came with the camera. The manual is in pdf form online and I have been using that, but it's not the same as a handy pocket version. That being said, the manual is lacking in some aspects. The requirements for MF in time lapse mode and exposure smoothing should be referenced in the time lapse section. Image quality looked good, but I haven't taken that many. Some were in Macro mode and considering I'm still learning the best settings for that, the focus was good. I love a viewfinder but made the sacrifice for this camera. I'm sure it will grow on me once I get through the learning curve.

All-in-one P&S?

I purchased the TG-7 for use while snorkeling, kayaking, and other activities definitely not recommended for my normal photo gear. The unexpected loss of my regular camera during a major trip suddenly thrust it into the primary picture-taking role. Although I would never consider abandoning my larger format equipment, this tiny sensor point-&-shoot unit far exceeded my expectations. It performed admirably under a broad range of conditions, often capturing single-handed grab shots while I was deeply engaged in some physical activity. The results were generally sharp (a credit to its image stabilization) and well-exposed, with the built-in flash proving very helpful in difficult lighting situations. The close-up capabilities in Microscope Mode are truly impressive, and zooming the lens through its 25-100mm equivalent range does not alter the camera envelope. The small size makes it very easy to carry and operate while taking part in a variety of activities. Of course, the size is also responsible for many of its limitations. It is unrealistic to expect the dynamic range or performance in poor lighting conditions to compare favorably to much larger sensor cameras. Fortunately, the camera offers a RAW file option, so post-processing is not limited by 8-bit jpegs. Even though it is designed to function in extreme weather conditions, it seems unlikely that many of the controls would be operable when wearing gloves. Although I don't take many videos, I feel that anything under 4K with this camera is not worth the effort. The attached photos offer a representative selection of the results I have obtained with the TG-7. Note that the subject of the flower close-up is a tiny bluebell.

Besides the camera, what comes in the box? Charging cable? Battery?
Asked by: Jim
The user manual states that it comes with a battery and a cable that can be used to transfer pictures to a computer (and simultaneously charge the battery while it is connected to the computer). This cable can connect to USB charging devices such as power banks to charge the battery (power banks sold separately). If you want to plug into the wall (AC power), you'll have to buy a converter, since that's not included in the box.

Asked by: Xavier
You do not need to buy a battery charger. You can charge the battery while it is in camera if you connect via a usb cable. Of course, you may charge the battery with a separate charger if you wish. You can find extra batteries that come with a separate charger if you look around.
