Kali Audio LP-UNF Reviews

Well. I can only speak to the sound for the price. Disagree with the "over the top enthusiastic" positive reviews out there.

As always, BH is way better than Amazon. Now for the review. All the online reviews including YouTube reviews have nothing but praise about these Kali speakers. I don't enthusiastically agree. Why is everyone flipping the switches in the back to cut down the bass? It's because it is overpowering the midrange. Bass to me sounds sloppy and too boomy, mostly because it drowns out the midrange vocals (and they are not even setup near a wall). For these things on sale, I can buy 3 pairs of Edifier MR3 on sale. You can do a quad setup for half this price buying inexpensive edifiers and the bass will be more balanced with the rest of the midrange and treble. I have the Edifier MR3 ($100) , Edifier M60 ($150), and Edifier S3000 Pro ($600). All the speakers in the $100-300 range really don't justify more than a $100 price difference from the lowest priced ones. I will try the Edifier M90 once they are the same sale price as the Kali sale price. Not fair comparing the Edifier s3000 which are well worth their price but not in this category of small nearfield speakers. Also, all these nearfield speakers don't have grills. Less is not more people. Give me some speaker grills so nothing makes contact with the speaker cones. Afterall, we are reaching up to them in the dark to adjust volume without looking at the speakers! I upgraded my 10-year-old laptop to Bluetooth 6 and you can't do that to a speaker, so the Kalis have rather old Bluetooth in them making quad setup out of the question without buying an aftermarket Bluetooth 6 transmitter. I prefer a nearfield speaker with USBC (which is the connection I use most the time) and with Bluetooth 6 as a bonus so the M90 will be interesting to try once they are priced reasonable on typical sales promotions throughout the year. The MR5 I have not tried but they don't have USBC (same goes for the MR3) ............................ Well, I have to say something positive about these Kali LP-UNF speakers so here it goes. They happen to be the only speakers I have that don't require an AC direct plug-in to supply power as they use laptop brick style adapter at 24VDC. Most will find this as a negative but for me it makes it quite interesting. I bought a StarGear Starlink Mini Car Adapter 12V to 24V DC Step Up Converter rated 60W Car Cigarette Lighter Adapter ($29). This works great to use theses Kali speakers in my van not having to have any AC conversion device. Perfectly matched for the Kali power requirements and the barrel size is the same at DC 5521 on both ends with 16awg or 18awg in many different waterproof lengths. I tried it with a little portable Anker battery power pack that had a 12vdc Accessory Cigarette Socket and it worked perfect with the voltage step up adapter to 24vdc. I can use the Kalis wherever I want without needing 110vac outlet anywhere. Bring them on a camping trip or throw them in your vehicle. Everything stays dc out to dc in - with no ac conversion needed. Since the bass is rather overly punchy, they will work great in an outdoor environment on a picnic table or in a vehicle where this type of bass is more desired. I prefer a rather midrange forward speaker for clarity with PC or TV speakers as I am trying to hear what people are saying without the bass overpowering. Funny thing is I prefer more midrange forward speakers even when I listen to music as I think it gives the music body and presence. To each their own but my home stereo\quad subwoofer setup is having sub-woofers play only below 80hz as any crossover above this muddies the midrange. I think Edifier understands this in that they pull back more from the bass in favor of ensuring a clear midrange on a two-way speaker that doesn't have a dedicated midrange speaker... These speakers have no sub-out connection. How can these be connected to a sub-woofer in such a case?
Asked by: Chandra
Saying a sub can’t be added to this system is ignorant to different ways you can hook up speakers. Get a monitor controller that has a sub output.
