PolarPro Peter Mckinnon Chroma VND/PL Mist Fi... Overview

A comprehensive filter for neutral density and polarization, this 2 to 5-stop, 82mm Peter McKinnon Chroma Variable ND4-ND32 & Polarizer Filter from PolarPro leverages newly designed Chroma Glass to create a filter with two distinct, independently controlled elements for neutral density and polarization in a bi-rotational design. The new glass also increases the filter's color accuracy, only incurring the color variance that results from polarization.

The neutral density filter allows users to reduce exposure values to achieve various effects, while the polarizer reduces glare and reflections to give an image a sharp, clean look. In addition to the space-saving combination of these functions, PolarPro has also improved the tactile experience of using the filter, incorporating ball bearings at each stop to lock the VND setting into place. The filter also features 16 layers of anti-scratch, antireflective, and anti-fingerprint coatings.

Fantastic Cinematic Look, But the CPL Ring Is Way Too Tight

I’ve only had a short time with the PolarPro VND/CPL so far, but artistically I absolutely love what it does to outdoor scenes. The colors, contrast, and overall cinematic rendering are excellent. Greens look richer, reflections are controlled nicely, and it gives daylight scenes a much more atmospheric feel without looking overprocessed. It genuinely changed the way I was shooting during a recent walk with my Nikon Z6 III and 24-120 f/4. Image quality-wise, I’ve been very impressed. Sharpness still looks strong, and the CPL effect especially helps forests, water, and reflective surfaces look much more controlled and cinematic. My biggest complaint is the CPL adjustment ring itself. On my copy, the CPL ring is extremely tight and difficult to rotate independently. While trying to adjust the polarization, I often end up accidentally changing the ND strength too, which gets frustrating in the field when trying to work quickly. I’m hoping it loosens up a little with use over time, because otherwise the filter quality itself is excellent. At this price point though, I do think the control rings should feel absolutely flawless right out of the box. It’s tight enough that I’m honestly considering reaching out to B&H to see if maybe my copy is defective and eligible for replacement. Overall: Excellent image quality and cinematic rendering Great color and reflection control Very premium optics CPL ring is overly stiff and frustrating to fine tune I still really like the filter and plan to keep using it, but the ring tension keeps this from being a perfect product for me.

Drop the cash for reliability

I held back on getting this for so long because I felt that Tiffen ND's were good enough for a much lower price. That strategy made sense for the point I was in my business, but now that I've gotten this filter I don't think I'll get anything else. The colors and form factor are exactly what I hope from it. The lens cover that it comes with is fantastic and stays secure when I'm pulling the camera out of my bag, something that my other ND filter with an included cap wasn't good about. Honestly, when it comes to filters, the less I think about them and notice them, the better. I need it to be a no brainer to put on, adjust on the fly, and not be in the way. This form factor keeps the ND close to the size of the lens front element and it works perfectly. It's worth the extra money for the reliable, deceptively simple solution that will get me through long term.

Can I stack this with a PolarPro 4 stop ND filter?
Asked by: Michael
The PolarPro Peter McKinnon Chroma Variable ND & Polarizer Filter 82mm does not have front filter threads. However, the PolarPro QuartzLine Solid ND Filter (82mm, 4-Stop) has 82mm front threads. Therefore you can stack the variable filter on top of the solid ND.

There is no difference between PolarPro Helix and PolarPro Helix Maglock. They are the same. They just added the name MagLock so customers know you can lock the filter after it is attached.

Can I add a stage 2 mist from polar pro on the front of this?
Asked by: Toby
No, you cannot add a Stage 2 Mist filter from PolarPro to the front of the PolarPro Peter McKinnon Chroma VND/PL Filter for Helix MagLock. The Chroma VND/PL filters are designed to eliminate the need for stacking additional filters, as they already integrate optional Black Mist or Gold Mist effects directly into the filter itself, reducing vignetting and maintaining optimal image quality179.

Will this filter ever come in grade 1/8 black mist?
Asked by: David
PolarPro 1/4 Black Mist blooms highlights by a similar amount as a PolarPro 1/8 Gold Mist. The difference is the gold mist has a warmer tone to the bloomed highlights. PolarPro does not make the PolarPro Peter McKinnon Chroma VND/PL Black Mist Filter (82mm, 2 to 5-Stop, Grade 1/4) in 1/8 grade. They say that if they made Black Mist in 1/8 grade it may not show any effect in certain situations.
