FUJIFILM X-M5 Overview

By B&H Photo's
FUJIFILM X-M5 Mirrorless Camera (Silver)
Elevate What You Create. Elevate How You Create.
For ambitious creators eager to ditch the smartphone and elevate their content, FUJIFILM offers the silver X-M5 Mirrorless Camera, whose slight footprint is complemented by a powerful, APS-C X-Trans 4 CMOS sensor, an audio and video-friendly interface, and an interchangeable lens mount accepting the entirety of FUJIFILM's X-mount lens family. Throw in 20 of their acclaimed film simulation recipes, their latest in AI-driven subject detection autofocus, and the company's timeless, retro-inspired design, and the X-M5 is poised to transform the way you create.
Bigger Sensor, Better Image
The first X-M camera in more than a decade, the X-M5 boasts the same 26.1 MP X-Trans 4 CMOS sensor as its viral cousin, the X100V, and the same X-Processor 5 as the X100VI. More than 16 times the size of an average smartphone sensor, the X-Trans 4's superior light-gathering abilities mean richer colors, more detail, and better low-light performance. The sensor's design features a randomized pixel array that mimics the organic nature of film, producing nuanced colors and transitions while reducing digital artifacts. The larger, APS-C sensor creates a shallower depth of field, unlocking deeper background blur and subject separation.
Optimized Audio, 6K Video
The X-M5 was designed to address the full spectrum of contemporary content creation, exceling in both audio and video capture. The camera has three built-in microphones and four sound capture modes - Surround, Front Priority, Back Priority, and Front & Back Priority - to optimize sound-gathering for specific situations. A 3.5mm microphone socket allows further control over the soundscape, while new in-camera algorithms enable both voice enhancement and environmental noise reduction.
Capable of delivering open-gate, 6.2K video at up to 29.97 fps, the X-M5 can deploy every pixel on the 3:2 native aspect ratio sensor toward high-quality video. The camera combines this elevated image quality with several self-tape-oriented features, most of which are easily accessible in the camera's Vlog mode.
  • Background Defocus mode blurs the background to focus on the camera's main subject.
  • Product Priority mode automatically switches focus to a product placed closer to the camera, ideal for reviews and demonstrations.
  • Portrait Enhancer mode applies skin-smoothening algorithms in Weak, Medium, and Strong options.
  • 9:16 Short Movie mode offers a cropped 9:16 vertical recording option in 15, 30, and 60 second options for internet-ready content straight from the camera.
Additionally, a prominent red outline appears around the screen when the camera is recording. The X-M5 further augments the video recording experience with the X-Processor 5's AI-assisted autofocus, which includes eye-tracking and subject recognition. Two Log modes for color grading simplify the post-production process, and the camera's variety of video sizes and frame rates includes slow-motion video at 60 fps in 4K and up to 240 fps in Full HD.
Film Simulations and Color Science
Renowned for its color science, FUJIFILM has outfitted the X-M5 with 20 Film Simulation modes to reproduce the look and feel of several of the company's storied film types. The camera's true-to-life results can be interpreted with these film simulations, eight of which are accessible on one of the camera's top dials. The modes can simplify workflows by producing edited material straight out of the camera.
In addition to simulating specific film types, a Grain Effect mode is also available to replicate the look of old film photos with an organic textured appearance. Color Chrome and Color Chrome Blue effects are also available to deepen color, tonal response, and gradation with higher saturation colors.
Design and Build
The X-M5 is the smallest and lightest X-series body, weighing 12.5 oz without a lens and spanning 4.4" wide. Keeping with the FUJIFILM aesthetic and X-series design philosophy, the silver rangefinder-style body comes with a series of top dials to set mode, film simulation, and adjust settings. The interchangeable lens mount accepts any of the more than 35 X-series lenses, with the option to connect other lenses with an appropriate, optional adapter.
The camera features a 3" articulating LCD touchscreen optimized for self-taping. Anticipating the needs of creators, FUJIFILM has shifted the locations of connector ports to the right side of the camera, eliminating wires interference with the monitor. The microphone port has also been moved from the side of the camera to rear to further accommodate content creation accessories.
  • Integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wirelessly sharing images to a mobile device or to use the device to remotely control the camera.
  • Frame.io Camera to Cloud integration allows delivery of photos or video straight to the cloud moments after they're created.
  • Single SD memory card slot supports up to the UHS-I standard.
  • Included NP-W126S battery provides up to approximately 45 minutes of continuous 6K capture or up to 440 images in Economy mode.

FUJIFILM XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ Lens (Black)

Sporting a sleek profile and a versatile focal length range, the black XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ from FUJIFILM is a 23-69mm-equivalent zoom characterized by its compact, retractable design. The first power zoom lens in the X-series lineup, this lens allows for electronic zoom control for smooth focal length adjustments. It also features an optical image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake by three stops for sharper handheld images. Complementing the handling assets, the optical design incorporates both aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, to improve sharpness and clarity, and has a Super EBC coating that suppresses flare and ghosting in order to achieve greater contrast and color accuracy.

Standard zoom is designed for FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 23-69mm equivalent focal length range.
Two extra-low dispersion elements are used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Three aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations, which helps to improve sharpness and realize more accurate rendering.
Super EBC coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Power zoom design allows for easy switching between focal lengths and two separate speeds can be selected depending on how the zoom ring is rotated. When recording video, the zoom will move at a constant speed in order to produce a smoother, more pleasing motion.
Using the power zoom capability, the lens also features a retractable design for a more compact form factor when not in use. Additionally, when the camera is turned on, the lens will automatically extend into position for shooting.
Stepping motor, along with an internal focusing design, affords fast and quiet autofocus performance that benefits both stills and video applications.
Optical image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake by 3 stops to better enable handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

Asked by: Cesar
The FUJIFILM X-M5 Mirrorless Camera is not UHS-2-compatible, so the fastest it can go is UHS-1 V30. For example, you can use the SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card (B&H # SA256GBEPS).

It would be best to use a V90 card—with a write speed no slower then 260 MB/s—in the FUJIFILM X-M5 Mirrorless Camera with XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver) to shoot 6.2k video. Please see the following link for some good options: https://bhpho.to/3BUlFFp.

The FUJIFILM X-M5 Mirrorless Camera with XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver) produces better video and audio than the FUJIFILM X-T30 II Mirrorless Camera. Still image quality is better when shooting in low light.

the camera comes with a battery pack but charger has to be purchased separately?
Asked by: Amy
Yes, the FUJIFILM X-M5 Mirrorless Camera with XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver) does not include a battery charger for the FUJIFILM NP-W126S Li-Ion Battery Pack (B&H # FUNPW126S). The FUJIFILM BC-W126S Battery Charger (B&H # FUBCW126SB) would be a good charger to get, or you could charge the battery leaving it in the camera and then connect the camera to a computer with a USB-C cable.
