Audient iD48 Overview

Flagship USB iD Interface Made for Hybrid Workflows
Audient iD48 24-In | 32-Out USB-C Audio Interface is designed with producers and engineers in mind, delivering professional-grade features tailored for the demands of modern studios. Equipped with eight Audient Console mic preamps, two JFET instrument inputs, advanced 32-bit ESS converters, and eight balanced inserts with innovative Switchable Analog Insert technology, this interface offers exceptional audio fidelity and effortless integration with outboard gear, making it a perfect choice for hybrid workflows.

The perfect foundation for a professional studio setup, the iD48 boasts ADAT/SPDIF expandability, wordclock I/O, talkback functionality, and customizable monitor controls. Effortlessly reference your mixes through Main and Alt speaker outputs, or two independent headphone amps. Seamlessly manage your workflow with the included iD Mixer software, enabling ultralow-latency direct monitoring, stereo-cue mix creation, virtual loopback for streaming, and layout preset storage. To enhance creativity, the iD48 comes bundled with a free comprehensive suite of instrument and processor plug-ins.

8 Audient Console Mic Preamps
  • iD48’s eight Audient Console mic preamps deliver 68 dB gain, ultralow noise and distortion with a touch of classic analog warmth.
  • Utilizing the same fully analog and discrete mic-preamp circuit design found in Audient's renowned recording console, the ASP8024-HE, the iD48 brings real analog-console mic preamps on your desktop.
2 JFET Instrument Inputs
  • Designed to replicate the input stage of a classic valve amplifier, iD48’s two harmonically rich JFET instrument inputs give you the perfect sonic foundation for your guitars or basses before you hit your amp sims.
Advanced 32-Bit Converter Technology
  • The iD48 utilizes 32-bit ESS DAC converter technology to minimize quality loss and maximize performance during conversion.
  • And with 126.5 dB (DAC) and 120 dB(ADC) of dynamic range, you will hear subtle details better and identify problematic issues faster.
Expand Your Studio with ADAT I/O
  • Future-proof your studio with iD48's optical input and output connections.
  • Supporting both ADAT and SPDIF, iD48 lets you expand your I/O by adding up to 16 channels of external mic preamps to your setup.
Hybrid Workflow: Switchable Insert Routing for Outboard Integration
  • Utilizing D-sub connections, iD48 provides eight fully balanced inserts, letting you integrate your favorite outboard FX prior to conversion, while giving you the cleanest signal path possible.
  • iD48’s switchable insert routing enables you to select which source is feeding the ADC path. This enables you to choose whether to send the Audient Mic Preamp or a DAW output to your outboard on a per-channel basis and all without having to plug or unplug cables.
  • For users wanting to record external analog mic preamps, iD48’s returns let you bypass the Audient Mic Preamp, giving you a clean and direct conversion path for recording.
4 Speaker Outputs
  • Connect, listen, and reference your mixes through Main and Alt speaker outputs.
  • Alternatively use the extra line outputs to send audio to an external headphone amp for distribution to your artists.
2 Independent Headphone Outputs
  • Confidently mix on headphones with two engineer-grade, fully independent stereo headphone amps, providing 124 dB of dynamic range and enough power to support headphones up to 600 ohms.
User Defined Monitor Control
  • Configurable function buttons let you assign any of iD48’s powerful monitoring capabilities such as Speaker Select, Dim, or Mono Sum to the two dedicated hardware Function Buttons.
Talkback
  • iD48’s innovative talkback technology lets you use a USB microphone or your computer's built-in mic as a dedicated talkback mic—freeing up valuable mic preamps for recording
Ultralow Latency iD Software Mixer
  • Optimized for speed, the iD Mixer (included) is your productivity's best friend. Quickly set up ultralow-latency direct monitoring, create up to four stereo cue mixes, save layout presets, and quickly setup advanced routing—all from one easy to use app.
All-Metal Construction
  • Featuring an all-metal construction and detachable rack ears, iD48 is designed to handle the rigors of everyday use, whether in the studio or on the road. Perfect for any studio environment, the fanless design means iD48 provides nearly silent operation.
Free Software with ARC
  • iD48 is bundled with a free suite of creative software including Cubase LE, alongside industry leading plug-ins and virtual instruments, so you can start recording right out of the box.

I had been working with an UAD Apollo x4 for years. This is a very comfortable work flow, and some of the UA plugins are fantastic. However, over the years I started accumulating some outboard hardware, such as a couple of fine compressors and preamps. You can incorporate these into the UA workflow, and you can even bypass the build in preamps, but when it comes to inserts, the setup becomes so convoluted and difficult that the iD system started to look like a godsend. With two DB28 cables, which will unfortunately add hundreds to the price tag, you can hook up those inserts very easily. This is not a great solution for a mobile setup, but if you have the luxury of installing a more permanent rig, it could not be much easier. The Audient software is elegant and simplistic. Here are two major caveats: You will not be able to use plugins while tracking. You will have to use software monitoring if you want to have some reverb and/or compression available while singing, for instance. With modern computers, the resulting latency is going to be much less of an issue than was the case in the past. In fact, UA's entire approach was invented to get some of that processing power away from the CPU and into the interface. Smart idea, but the cost now seems prohibitive. The second, and to my mind bigger, shortcoming of the Audient system: The iD mixer lets you pick between three input options: "mic" (which lets you use the interface's built in preamps), "ADC direct", which comes into play with outboard preamps, and "Mic insert", which gives you access to those insert points for external equipment. You can not, however, combine ADC direct and Mic insert! So if you have, for instance, a mic preamp and an external compressor, you can't use them in tandem, unless you chose the inelegant solution of daisy chaining those units before reaching the interface. Fortunately, I'm mostly using a channel strip that already has a compressor and an EQ integrated, so ADC direct works fine for me. One thing that happened to me and that I just want to mention as a warning, was rather shocking. When I first turned on the interface, and before I had installed the drivers correctly, I was hit with a deafening blast of white noise that gave me a severe headache. Make absolutely sure that you have everything connected and installed correctly before turning on your studio monitors.

Excellent Service!
