Apple MYH93AM/A Overview

With the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, you can connect legacy Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices, such as external hard drives and Thunderbolt docks, to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your compatible Mac. As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port and macOS Sierra or later.

In addition, it can be used to connect Thunderbolt-enabled displays—such as the Apple Thunderbolt Display and LG Thunderbolt 2 displays—to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) / USB 4 ports on your Mac. However, using this adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt Display requires a power source (sold separately), because the display does not provide power through the adapter.

Please note that this adapter does not support DisplayPort displays, like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

I'd been using three 27" Apple Thunderbolt Displays with my 2013 Mac Pro. Decided to get a 2020 Mac Mini, so got this adapter to use one of the displays with the new(er) computer. No issues of any kind.

I wouldn't risk using another one

I've tried a few similar 3rd party adapters like this over the years...all of them have failed and/or introduced scary behaviors. The only ones that have never been a problem have been the Apple adapters. The part number has changed once or twice over the years, and I don't know what the difference is, but the old ones I have still work as well as the new ones. Expensive? Sure, but how expensive is garbled data and/or a fried thunderbolt bus?

I am trying to hook up a DV cassette player to my Imac (2109). Correct me if i'm wrong, but I would also need a firewire 800 adapter to Thunderbolt 2 correct? Trying to upload old footage from tape.

The adapters you will need are not universal and entirely depend on the camera and its outputs. The Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter may only be one part of the puzzle.
